My question is about the 'Restore Backup' option on iTunes (Not 'Restore iPhone'). So, if I click on Back Up Now, then 'Restore Backup', would that go through the process of erasing everything on my phone as new then restore whatever iTunes has backed up?
I do not want this to happen, as with previous experience iTunes doesn't restore a mirror of what the iPhone was when it was backed up as is the case with iCloud backups.
What I am trying to do is, as I've found a method on Youtube, there is an application where I can delete all the multimedia saved in my 'iMessages' so clear up some space. As doing that manually through the phone would take a lifetime. The method is to backup on iTunes, then using the backup created, importing that into the application then deleting the messages through that then restoring the phone using that amended backup.
So back to my question, would restoring through 'Restore Backup' just restore the backup internally or would it flush the entire phone and then restore the backup? And if it does so, what would be lost in the restore?
    Thank you all,
    Fahmid

iCloud should overwrite your phone with the data stored in your account, preserving your newer data.  However, to be sure I would go to Settings>iCloud and turn data syncing to Off before restoring the backup.  Then, after restoring the backup, turn the data syncing back to on, and when prompted about Merging with iCloud, choose Don't Merge.  This will ensure that the data in your iCloud account overwrites the data on your phone (which is your goal).
Also, you don't sync text messages with iCloud so you will end up losing your more recent messages when they are overwritten by the backup.

  • ITunes not recognizing iPhone 5 iO7 on Windows 7

I have exhausted myself dealing with this problem. My iTunes will not recognize my iPhone 5. I am running Windows 7 64 bit and my computer recognizes the phone when i plug it in, however, my iTunes does not so I am not able to sync any music. I have tried practically everything I have found on the internet to fix this problem and even the people at the Apple store could not help me with my problem. I have uninstalled and installed all Apple related programs, I have insured that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is working correctly but nothing seems to fix the problem. I just don't know what to do anymore because nothing seems to work. I have followed the suggestions contained in the following discussions but nothing seems to work. Thank you for your help.

    Had this problem this morning.
Once in the past had to erase my iphone and reload it.That was unpleasant.
    This morning had the problem,too.
Plugged in my iphone directly into the Imac (not hub) then clicked shut down on the imac.
Pressed the button in the back while the iphone was still plugged in-and when rebooted iphone was visable in itunes.
    Hope this helps.
Thanks so much for your suggestion. I'm using a MacBook Air and I just tried this with my laptop - shutting down the computer all the say (not restarting it) and then booting it back up with the phone plugged in. It didn't work but it was worth a shot! Thank you!

I had this exact same problem and just figured out how to fix it. I had to reload the driver on the iphone5 in order for itunes to recognize the device. Follow the steps here to see if you might need to do the same thing. Once I reinstalled the driver, everything works fine and I'm now able to sync with itunes again.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have seen a TON of posts like mine where this is the solution. Unfortunately, I am on a Mac not Windows so the driver isn't the problem.

Check first if your iTunes is up-to-date. If it's updated, try using a different cable or try plugging it to a different USB port.

  • Itunes not seeing iphone, vista, USB, error 1611

After 8 hours of work and researching everything on the web and including here, I have restored my Iphone.
Background: Itunes loaded on an toshiba laptop running 32 bit Vista.
After plugging in and my iphone sync, I got the usual update message and finally decided to update. Well during the middle of the update the proceess aborted. I went to restore and that aborted.
    1. I tried an new cable and that did not work and started to get a 1611 error.
    2. I took the iphone to apple genius and he recovered the iphone from the broken restore and my phone was working with all data lost.
    3. I plug the iphone back in at home to restore my back up and Itunes would not see my iphone.
    4. I read serveral sites and articles on this site. I found that none of the articles got to the root problem. Several articles on the site need to be updated.
Here are the results of my finding.
    1. After you find that your iphone will not connect to Itunes ( thus it does not show up in the device section of the left panel), you need to go to the device manager in windows (go to start - start search - type "dev" - select device manager.
2 Open up the Universal System Bus section. You should see two things if your system is working properly when you iphone is plug in. One you should see the apple mobile device usb driver. Two you should see your card reader. You need to have both of these. If you dont have either your your system is not going to reconize your IPhone. I had one driver in there that said "unknow device". This was not the iphone in error!!!! As stated in articles on this site. This was the Card reader software by Realtek on my system. Because i did not have a card reader i could not see my Iphone.
    STEPS to fix.
    1. Shut down.
    2. Unplug all USB devices.
    3. Reboot to safe mode.
    4. Delete out all USB drivers.
    5 Shut down.
    6. This is important!!! unplug your power cord.
    7. This is important!!! take out your battery!!
    8. Let it sit for 5 minutes with out any power.
    9. Put in battery and plug in computer.
    10. reboot the machine to normal startup.
    11. Let it add all the USB drivers.
    12. You should now see your USB card reader. If not try it again.
    13. One you have your USB card reader driver. Plug in your Iphone.
    You should be working.
Another helpful hint. If you reload Itunes like I did. Which was a wasted step. Because the Card Reader was the problem and reloading itunes will not fix this. Take a backup of the registry key that has your Iphone name. You will save some time.
Good Luck and I hope this helps someone.

    technabob,
What version of Windows Vista are you running (32-bit or 64-bit)? Please note that 64-bit versions of Vista are not supported as stated in the minimum requirements:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305703
In addition to iTunes and Quicktime, you will also want to remove/reinstall Apple Software Update and Apple Mobile Device Support as listed in:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
If you are still having issues, you may want to test the iPhone in a new user, or use MSCONFIG to see if there is any software that might be conflicting with the iPhone. For more information on using MSCONFIG, see this article:

  • Itunes not detect iphones

    Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

As the title says, I cannot get this itunes to detect my ******* iphone and its been a week and no help.  I'd appreciated it if people would not copy paste a garbage link on troubleshooting because I TRIED THEM ALL AND NONE WORKS.
Tried reinstalling everything apple, tried updating my iphone using another computer, tried updating driver (but it wont because its already updated!), tried restarting the service (apple mobile) but it wont restart once I stop it because it says "the apple mobile device service on local computer started and the stopped."
Who do I have to call with a very angry voice to get this **** to work? I tried everything, I am tired... someone for the love of god help.
    PS,
Don't say its my firewall / anti virus because ITS NOT, it has been working for the longest time ever with them and it even detects my 120GB iPod but not my iPhone or my brothers iTouch.

I managed to update the driver but now I cannot see the ipod under My Computer OR itunes

  • Itunes not seeing iPhone through wifi

iTunes used to wirelessly notice my iPhone and I would be able to sync it through wifi but now iTunes only sees my iPhone if it is connected with the cord. how do i fix this problem?

    Having the same problem now.
My iPhone doesn't show up in the sidebar of iTunes anymore.  I had it set to sync over wifi and open iTunes when the iPhone was connected (e.g., checked these two boxes on the Summary Pane).  But now, the phone doesn't show up at all.  Oddly, my iPad shows and syncs fine.  And, despite not being seen by iTuens, my iPhone is connected to my Wifi network and works fine.
I've tried unchecking and rechecking the box for wifi sync, but it doesn't hold.  The phone will show up after I "reset" the check boxes with the phone attached to a cord and then disconnect the cord.  After doing this, I can shut down iTunes and restart it, and the phone shows.  Fine and good.  But after I restart my iMac, the phone doesn't show anymore in iTunes.  My guess is that this is an iTunes problem and not a problem with the wifi or the phone.
Any ideas on how to get my phone to stay showing in iTunes?

  • IMac/iTunes not recognizing iPhone 5s

I have a 2010 iMac running OS X Yosemite (10.10.3) and iTunes 12.1.2.27.  I also have the following IOS devices all running 8.3 of IOS:
    iPhone 5s
    iPhone 5
    iPad Air 2
    iPad Air
iTunes recognizes the iPhone 5 and both iPads every time right away.  It fails to recognize the iPhone 5s 95% of the  time.  I can't point to any logical reason why but occasionally, the iMac/iTunes will recognize the iPhone 5s.  I've been into the genius bar twice.  The phone was recognized both times.  It is also recognized if I plug it into my Windows PC.  It's not the cable or USB port because if I plug in one of my other devices, they are immediately recognized. It's not the hardware of the iPhone 5s because it is recognized by the genius bar laptops and my Windows PC.
I have a support ticket open with Apple and Level 2 is working on it but I thought I'd throw it out here to see if anyone has any suggestions.  It acts like it is a software conflict somewhere in my iMac.  If you have any suggestions other than the standard Apple support doc of try these things when you can't connect, please post them there.   Thanks.

  • ITunes not working/iPhone iOS7 won't update

Alright so apparently all of Apple software has decidede to crap out on me that I'm starting to regret spending money on this phone. A software update came out, iOS 7.1 so I very stupidly decided to download. I say stupidly since it seems like that's what started everything.
Obviously, to download it you need to be over a Wi-Fi connection. My Wi-Fi connection is great; I use it for everything (Netflix, email,i tunes, you name it). Strangely it didn't work like every other time. It was just stuck on "estimating remaining time" and after 5 minutes I got a failed to download message.
Weird, I thought, so I decided to test if the Wi-Fi was working. It was. I was able to load up any app, except for two things. iTunes and the App Store. None of those two work on my phone over Wi-Fi, I just get a "cannot connect to store" message. Why? Who knows, because apparently Apple thinks you're suppose to figure it out yourself why it can't connect instead of giving a diagnostic.
Weird, I thought again, so I decided to just connect it to my windows laptop, download the update through iTunes and install it from there. Sure enough, when I connected my phone and I loaded up iTunes, it immediately let me know there was a new software available for download so I went on with it so I could it all over with.
    Nope.
While being stuck on the "contacting iphone software update server" for a SEVERAL minutes, I noticed on the top the "accessing itunes store" message was also stuck. Eventually, iTunes gave me an error: "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone. Make sure your connection is active and try again." Huh? I use my wi-fi every single day, it's never failed me. It's working RIGHT NOW. I can access the internet PERFECTLY. I can access any internet related apps on my phone through wi-fi as well. Heck, it's ALWAYS worked. I've bought, downloaded purchases and updates normally through this wi-fi connection ever since I bought the phone. Everything works, except itunes/app store on my phone and now as well as iTunes on my laptop.  It's just stuck on the "accessing itunes store" message and I can't even log in. Every time I enter my ID and password, nothing happens, the box disappears and when I click sign in again, it asks me again for my ID/password. It never registers it's just stuck on a loop.
So now, I'm not too concerned about itunes/Appstore not working via wi-fi on my phone since they still work properly if I use my cellular data instead (but obviously I can't download the update since I NEED to be over wi-fi). What concerns me is iTunes being completely useless. I've tried just about everything I've read on several posts in this site, including the "netsh winsock reset" trick that apparently was very helpful to many people.
Anyway, if anyone can help me how to fix this, I'd appreciate it. And if someone can tell me exactly why this happened would awesome as well; I need to know if I did something wrong that screwed this up so I can make sure I don't do it again.

With that cluster of symptoms, I'd start with the following document:

  • Windows 7 x64 bit and iTunes not recognizing iPhone 3GS

    Hello,
I'm sorry to bring this up again and I know the community has seen it a million times but I'm definately needing someone to point me in the right direction. I have an Acer 5552 Laptop with Windows 7 x64 bit. It does not have the Intel P55 chipset as what I have read before in these discussions, so updating the BIOS will not work. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes x64 bit, removed and reinstalled the drivers and Apple Mobile Support software (which should do it by removing iTunes as a whole) and whenever I hook my iPhone to my laptop for a second sync it takes a long time to back up and then it gives an error, then when i try to connect it again iTunes says that the iPhone cannot be recognized and needs to be restored. I have done this 3 times in the past 2 months. This is a brand new laptop that I have. There should be no reason for this to happen unless I'm missing something. Is there any workaround to this? for the time being I'm syncing everything on an old, slow desktop that has Windows XP. It's worked with my old laptop which had XP on it great but sadly I gave my old laptop to my dad which he now uses to sync his iPhone with now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..also if anyone has the same laptop model I have and have Windows 7 x64 on it..please let me know what you did if you got your 3GS to sync all the time with no problems.
    Thank you very much.
