HT4623 ive gone to general but there is no.listing for "software". can u help?

I have a 3rd gen but am unable to put new apps on it. I've gone to general/settings but don't have "software" listed. Am I doing something wrong or maybe this specific iPod isn't able to be updates, please help. Thanks.

You may have a 1G (original iPod touch). Those can only go to 3.1.3.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are using iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
To update you will have to connect your iPad to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).

That feature isn't present until you have installed iOS 5 or later. You must upgrade via iTunes and your computer.

If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

i am waitig ur reply.why i try to update with itunes but there also very slow speed downloading and after 600 mb stop and when i resume another time start form zero that 600 mb i download arround 5 hours.

and press return, a list of user names on the machine appears
type exit and reboot and use the 10.6 disk to reset your password

The option to update from device was only brought in with iOS5, so as stedman1 says you'll have to connect to computer and use iTunes.

I have just bought an Ipod and have set up the i cloud. That seems to have worked, now i am trying to do the ipod match so this music is transferred to my ipod. I have gone into settings/ music as instruted but there is no option for it! pls help!

You only have the option if you are already running iOS 5. If you are trying to update the iOS, you have to use iTunes on a computer to update the iPad.

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

You needing to be running iOS 5 or later in order to do a Software Update from the device. To run iOS 5 you need a 3G or 4G iPod Touch. So if you really have a 4G iPod Touch, connect it to iTunes and you should be prompted about an update to its version of iOS.
