My first gen iPad does not offer the software update option on the general settings page.  How do I update without this selection

That only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases - you may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

    ... and the option to update the software from the iPod using Settings/General is not available on iOS 4 or earlier.
    You can get free Apps with iOS 3.x - providing they will run on the version you have. That's dependant upon your model of iPod. So before anything else, which version of iOS do you currently have on your iPod and do you know which model you own?

    The Software update button was only added in iOS 5. If you have anythng less than that you will need to connect your iPad to a computer running the latest version of Itunes and update through there.

    Hi Everyone,
                           Can you please help me in this. Already an ETL is loading the data from AS400 TO SQL server. I need to add a new
    column. In the Source (OLEDB source) am pulling the data from AS400 using ADO.NET connection manager.
    New column is added in AS400. To bring the new column from AS400, I added column name in the query in OLEDB source. Test connection is good. In the Source editor, when I click on preview it gives me the values of the new column and if I click on build
    new query also it gives me values for the new column.
    After mapping the columns and refreshing the data in OLEDB destination, I don't see any errors or warnings.
    But when I start executing the package it throws me the below error.
     Error: The output column  (4659) does not have a matching source column in the schema.
    [SSIS.Pipeline] Error: "component  (2861)" failed validation and returned validation status "VS_NEEDSNEWMETADATA".
    I need suggestion on this.

    Hi Veeresh,
    As per my understanding, this error happens when the OLE DB Source component cannot find the corresponding source column in the database table. Possible reason is the the column name in the external database table has changed or
    the column has been removed.
    To verify this issue, please go to the Advanced Editor for OLE DB Source Input and Output Properties tab to see the External columns and Output columns. To fix it, please refresh the data or recreate the Source.

    one of the apple forums said that iox is "expanvie" and gave us tips on how to lengthen battery life. i was already doing all that stuff. so it seemed to me that apple was just taking the stand that  ios is just more "expansive." this is lipservice hogwash. if that is the case, then we need to get new phones with batteries strong enough to accommodate running these power apps and updates.
    my iphone makes a **** good coaster though. right now i am just ready to start sending smoke signals!

    Then you either need to:
    1) Sign up for Creative Cloud so you can build a Single Edition app. Be warned though: this approach will no longer be valid as of May 1st when we retire support for Single Edition in Creative Cloud, and Single Edition apps are only on iPad devices.

    If you are using iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
    To update you will have to connect your iPhone to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).

    you can not update from iOS 4 to iOS 6 without access to iTunes and a computer.

    There's a little button by the volume rocker switch that's a dual purpose button. It's an all mute or a rotation lock. Could you have flipped that button by mistake?
