HT4623 my general button does not have a Software Update option....why?

my general button does not have a Software Update option....why? I am trying to update my Ipad 2 and it wont give the option to do so.

Because it's running an iOS version prior to 5.0 and must be updated from iTunes on a computer.

To update the iOS to 5.1.1 from iOS version end prior to iOS 5 you must connect the iPad to a computer running iTunes.
Start iTunes on the computer, connect the iPad, select the iPad in iTunes on the computer. If you are not automatically prompted to update select the General or Summary tab and then click on Check for Updates.

You need to have iOS 5 installed. Software Update on the iPhone only became available with that update. If your have a 3GS follow this.

  • HT4623 My general settings page does not have a software update option, any ideas on what to do?

My general settings page does not have the software update option on it does anyone know what I need to do? Was trying to update iOS

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to follow the second part of that article and update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
If it's a first gen iPad then it should be update to iOS 5.1.1, if it's an iPad 2 (or 3) then it will update to iOS 6 (so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change).

  • HT4623 my phone does not have the software update option

my ipone 4 does not have the software update option?

    Do the following:
Open the App Store app on your phone and update all your apps so the will work with the new iOS.
Connect your phone to your computer and open iTunes.  If prompted that there is an update available, decline.
Sync with iTunes to create a new backup and transfer any purchases from your phone to your iTunes library.
Import your photos to your computer for safekeeping as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
Go back to iTunes, click on the name of your phone on the left side, go to the Summary tab to the right and click on Check for Update (or Update).
This will download iOS to your computer (which may take a while), then install the update on your phone.  Pay attention to the progress information in iTunes on the top of the screen, and any information that appears on your phone during this process to be sure you don't disconnect your phone prematurely.

  • HT4972 My ipad2 does not have the software update option in the settings environment. Please what do I do?

Hello, I have an ipad2 with iOS 4.2.7 but am trying to update it to a 5 or so. The problem is that the"settings" environment on my pad does not have the "software update" option. Please what do I do to enable me update my iOS? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

My I pad does not have a software update tab when you go to settings and general. Is there another way to update?

The Software update button was only added in iOS 5. If you have anythng less than that you will need to connect your iPad to a computer running the latest version of Itunes and update through there.
In the article you came from, scroll down to the section titled Update your device using iTunes. And follow those steps to update.
