If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. After you update to iOS 5.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • My iPad does not show software updates on settings

I am trying to update my IPad to new operating system however I can't find software updates under general tab in settings? Why is my iPad settings different? How do I upgrade?

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

If you update to iOS 6 (which you can't if it's a first gen iPad) then you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change

  • HT4623 My iPad does not say software update?

How do I update my iPad to iOS 5. My settings/general does not say software update?

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11).
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
A first gen iPad will be update to iOS 5.1.1, and an iPad 2 and 3 to iOS 6.0.1 .

  • HT4623 My ipad does not have "Software update" option under General Settings

Trying to update ipad.  My ipad does not have the "Software update" option referenced in instructions.

You only have the option if you are already running iOS 5. If you are trying to update the iOS, you have to use iTunes on a computer to update the iPad.
Instructions here for all iOS versions. Make sure that you go down to the section about using iTunes. The first part of the article only applies to you if you are already running iOS 5.

  • HT4972 iPad2 - why do I not see software update under settings, general?  I am trying to update to ISO5

iPad 2 I am trying to update to ISO5;however, when I go to setting, general, I do not have software update as directions show on apple support.

From my experience, you need 6.1.3 to download ios 7. I have tested this with six devices, one ios 5, one ios 6.1.3, and others 6.1.2. The ipad 2 that was 6.1.3 had the option available while the other five did not, then i updated my ipad mini to 6.1.3, after that the ios 7 option under settings was available. Please share your experiences too, thanks. And i would like someone to prove me wrong saying they updated directly from something not 6.1.3 to ios 7

  • HT4623 My iPhone does not have "software update" in Settings under General

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 4. It has the software it came with - iOS 4.3.3 I believe. I want to upgrade it to iOS6 but I'm not sure how. First, in my settings under general, there is no "upgrade software" section. Second, do I need to upgrade to iOS5 first before I upgrade the phone to iOS6? Also I ended my contract with AT&T months ago & they still have a "no sim" message on my ipad2 (successfully upgraded to IOS 6 after I upgraded using the macpro laptop computer I have to upgrade it to iOS5 it took forever to upgrade to 5 and only 20 minutes to upgrade to 6) anyway, back to my iPhone 4 - I use it on my wireless network at home. I do not use it as a phone and don't plan to. But I use it for so many other things around the house (stay at home mom) like calendars and email and a book. Can anyone help me with the questions I have about upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS6 without losing the newborn baby photos of my 7 month old?
    Thank you!!

Only iOS 5 and later can be updated "over the air".  If you want to upgrade your iOS you will need to do so using iTunes.
