HT4623 My iPad (version 4.2.1) does not have a "software update" line

I have never been able to update my ipad software. Unlike the apple app note my ipad does NOT have a line under Settings/General called "Software Update".
In the past I have attempted to access a newer version by connecting to my PC but this wiped all my expensively purchased movies from my iPad. i will not try this again as a result. Surely I can just download directly like with my iPhone? I have a good WiFi connection. Help!

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 as your tagline suggests then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (that should copy all your iTunes purchased films, music, apps etc). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

A first gen iPad should update to iOS 5.1.1 (it doesn't support iOS 6).
An iPad 2 and 3 should update to iOS 6.0.1, so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change.

I have an ipad version 3.2.2 and it does not have a software update tab under settings, how can I update to ios 5 software?

Connect it to your syncing PC and update using iTunes on the PC. The OTA (over the air & under Settings>General>Software Update) update was introduced with iOS 5.

  • HT4623 My ipad does not have the software update as an option. Is there another way to install os updates

My ipad does not have the software update as an option. Is there any other way to update the operating system? Thank you

Your tag line shows iOS 6. If you are running iOS 6 you should have it in the settings. Your tag line also shows iPad - so if you have the iPad 1 - you can only update to iOS 5.1.1 and you need a computer running iTunes.
So if You do not have iOS 5 on your iPad you have to update by using a computer via the latest version of iTunes. You can connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. Select the iPad on the left side under the devices heading. Click on the Summary Tab on the right. Click on Check for Update.
After you update to iOS 5 or later, you will have Software Update in you settings and can update via WiFi OTA.

My iPad does not have a "software update" category in the General section. How do I update it?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you are updating using wifi, locate your iPad close to your router so you don't get a wifi dropout (can cause update corruption).

Your iPad should be updated to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple), so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change - but google have app versions in the store

The 3G can not be upgraded beyond 4.2.1, but if the phone isn't there yet, see below.
The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

My I pad does not have a software update tab when you go to settings and general. Is there another way to update?

The Software update button was only added in iOS 5. If you have anythng less than that you will need to connect your iPad to a computer running the latest version of Itunes and update through there.

To update the iOS to 5.1.1 from iOS version end prior to iOS 5 you must connect the iPad to a computer running iTunes.
Start iTunes on the computer, connect the iPad, select the iPad in iTunes on the computer. If you are not automatically prompted to update select the General or Summary tab and then click on Check for Updates.
