I felt the same way. It happened on my 4s which I use in the kitchen as an ipod and it just suddenly stopped work, just like yours did. Only upside was that without music I also stopped cleaning the kitchen until it was fixed... now why wont my iron break?

It sounds like you are unable to successfully boot your iPod Touch. I would recommend these steps specifically from the following article, named:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more aboutrestoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.

Reset you phone: hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignore the off slider that appears first), then release. You won't lose any data doing this. No one can know if you will have a recurring problem with this or not. If you do, post again and we'll try to help you.

More than likely its a hardware issue, I have never encountered such a problem and best bet is to just go get it replaced. If you have insurance on your device apple will replace it as long as there was no water damage, if you dont have insurance they will charge $200 more or less. Hope you get it fixed

try resetting. Hold down volume down and sleep/wake button until you see apple logo.
If that does not work, connect it to itunes, then restore.
If none of that helps, you may need to contact apple. Has it gotten wet?

What do you mean by iphone 4 stop working ?
Is your iPhone screen completely blank (Black screen)?
Or you can see your iPhone Home screen but, you are not able to do anything ?
Try with a Hard Reset and see if it works.
First Make sure the Battery of your iPhone is Charged and then press and Hold the On/Off switch (On top left hand side of your iPhone) and the Home Button (Button at the bottom of your iPhone screen). Hold both the keys simultaneously for atleast 10 to 15 seconds and you should see an Apple Logo coming up on your screen, once you see the Apple logo you can then release oth On/Off switch and Home button and wait for your iPhone's Home screen.
See if this works or please let us know more what issue you are facing and since when and also let us know that have you made any changes since the problem occured.

I was in the middle of reading a text this morning when my iPhone suddenly turned off. Now, the screen is black and my computer won't even recognize it when it's plugged in. iPod first stopped updating/downloading apps, then shut down completely. Finally got around to plugging it into our home Mac and restoring it, which all seemed to go fine. However the screen is still unresponsive, I have tried turning it off and on again etc.

Thank you for the speedy reply! I suspected it to be a hardware fault but found a lot of people online had experienced the same problem. What should I do? Obviously it is well out of warranty and the battery is literally brand new. Seems a sad waste if it cannot be repaired. I've yet to find a definitive answer or what to do, be it contact Apple etc....

I tried turning it back on by holding the lock button but, nothing happened. i tried hold the home button and lock button but, still nothing happens.. Your phone may be out of battery or may have shut down due to overheating.
Try plugging it into its charger. If an empty battery with a charging symbol appears, you're good. Just let it charge for a few minutes.
If you were using your phone excessively and it is extremely hot, wait until it cools down then turn it on again.
