HT4623 My iPhone does not have "software update" in Settings under General

Hi,
I have an iPhone 4. It has the software it came with - iOS 4.3.3 I believe. I want to upgrade it to iOS6 but I'm not sure how. First, in my settings under general, there is no "upgrade software" section. Second, do I need to upgrade to iOS5 first before I upgrade the phone to iOS6? Also I ended my contract with AT&T months ago & they still have a "no sim" message on my ipad2 (successfully upgraded to IOS 6 after I upgraded using the macpro laptop computer I have to upgrade it to iOS5 it took forever to upgrade to 5 and only 20 minutes to upgrade to 6) anyway, back to my iPhone 4 - I use it on my wireless network at home. I do not use it as a phone and don't plan to. But I use it for so many other things around the house (stay at home mom) like calendars and email and a book. Can anyone help me with the questions I have about upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS6 without losing the newborn baby photos of my 7 month old?

Only iOS 5 and later can be updated "over the air". If you want to upgrade your iOS you will need to do so using iTunes.

I have an iPhone 3gs. It's current version is 4.2.1. I have tried to update it through iTunes, I have also tried to update by my phone but can't find software update anywhere on my phone. It is ment to be under "Settings" - "General" - "Software Update". Can anyone help me with this please? Does the iPhone 3gs even update to the latest version out?

That feature is only available with ios 5 or later.
You will need to update as always. open itunes, connect iphone

You must upgrade through iTunes. That feature requires iOS 5 or later which you apparently don't have. So see:

Go to the Apple Support site in Safari and download the latest version of iOS that your iPad is compatible with.

Trying to update ipad. My ipad does not have the "Software update" option referenced in instructions.

You only have the option if you are already running iOS 5. If you are trying to update the iOS, you have to use iTunes on a computer to update the iPad.
Instructions here for all iOS versions. Make sure that you go down to the section about using iTunes. The first part of the article only applies to you if you are already running iOS 5.

you cant do the update from your phone becuase apple put that into the IOS 5.1.1 update and it looks like you are running IOS 4.2.7. So like miller said you need to plug into itunes and update to IOS 6.

Thanks. I have been looking for this information for hours too. You answered my question in your list. I have a 2nd generation iPod Touch and last updated to iOS 4.2.1. Now many of the games are obsolete after being updated. I wish I hadn't updated them now, and I would still have play available. It's sad in this economy that I'll have to purchase a new iPod touch just to play a few simple games. I haven't even had it three years yet. That's what I get for not waiting a few months for the next generation. That's a nice little marketing tactic from Apple .

No. It doesn't. That is only present if you are already running iOS 5 or higher.
Since the iPhone 3G can NOT run anything higher than 4.2.1, you will never see it on that phone.
