HT4623 My Settings General does not have "Software Update"
Trying to update iPad OS but Settings>General doesn't have "Software Update" item. Any guidance what to do to update the iPad OS?
The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
If it's an iPad 1 then it should update to iOS 5.1.1, an iPad 2 (and 3) to iOS 6.0.1 (iOS 6 will remove the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change).

my iphone 3g does not have software update..... Go to Settings > General > Software Update ...... NOT THERE
No. It doesn't. That is only present if you are already running iOS 5 or higher.
Since the iPhone 3G can NOT run anything higher than 4.2.1, you will never see it on that phone. -

HT4623 My Ipad 2 does not have software update in General. How to update to iOS ?
no software update in General. How to update to the latest version .
The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

No.
Looks like yours could be a 2nd Gen... If so... iOS 4,2,1 is as far as it can go
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3382586?start=0&tstart=0
Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and “ Check for Updates “...
If an Update Appears Install it...
if not... you are up to date for your particular Device...
See the Using iTunes Section Here...

I have an iPad 2 and I want to ugrade the sftware to iSO5. When following the instructions I am told to go to Settings / General/ Software Upgarde to then down load the Update. The iPad 2 does not have Software Update under General so how do I install iSO5?
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Hi my ipod does not have software update on settings and on itunes it is up to date please give solutions
Thanks. I have been looking for this information for hours too. You answered my question in your list. I have a 2nd generation iPod Touch and last updated to iOS 4.2.1. Now many of the games are obsolete after being updated. I wish I hadn't updated them now, and I would still have play available. It's sad in this economy that I'll have to purchase a new iPod touch just to play a few simple games. I haven't even had it three years yet. That's what I get for not waiting a few months for the next generation. That's a nice little marketing tactic from Apple .

My ipad2 settings menu does not have an update software listed. I'm trying to update to ios5
My ipad2 settings page menu does not have an 'update software' on it. How do I update to ios5?
The update to iOS 5 is a lengthy process. Your entire device is being backed up, then wiped, then the new OS is installed, then your apps, etc., rebuilt on the device. If you have a lot apps, etc., on your device it will take a long time to update.

HT4623 what if my phone does not have software update option
What if iphone 4 does not have software update
Is the Software Update button not there at all? If it is not there, than you may want to update on your computer with iTunes. What version do you have of iOS anyway?
