So, I have an iPad 1 which has an IOS of 5.1.1. It will not continue upgrades beyond the 5.1.1. Do I assume my current iPad cannot handle the new IOS upgrades and is now an 'antique'?

That's a judgment that only you can make. If you want to continue to update some of the apps that you like and use frequently, then you will be forced to upgrade to a new iPad at some point in order to take advantage of the newest features in those apps - not to mention the newest feature that the iOS itself has to offer.
I have an iPad 1 and it was working fine for me. When the iPad 3 came out with the retina display, I was really blown away by the screen and wanted to take advantage of the latest and greates that the iOS had to offer so I took the plunge and bough the iPad 3.
My daughter is using my old iPad and both devices suit our own specific needs just fine.

When I first updated my original,iPad I had a number of issues with it, crashes, some sluggishness, and things like that. When the infest incremental update was released a little while later, it seemed to fix the issues on the iPad - or at least it made a very big difference.
I never updated it all the way to 5.1.1 - because I bought the new iPad so I have no first hand experience with 5.1.1 on the original iPad.
You can try some basic troubleshooting steps and see if they make a difference.
Quit all apps completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Sometimes this can help. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If you have issues with Safari - Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

Download iOS 4.2 for iPad without iTunes

Have been struggling with Network Connection Timeout and couldn't download IOS 4.2 before I found this fix.
I have now (finally) successfully downloaded IOS 4.2 for iPad.
You can download the iOS 4.2 update directly from appldnld.apple.com/iPad/ in your favorite download manager without iTunes.
I'm using Firefox (Win-7) and the download manager add-on.
As the download is stopped numerous times without reason
(I suspect server overload), you'll have to reclick on the download manager box numerous times to complete the download.
Once the iPad1,14.2.1_8C148Restore.ipsw file is downloaded, connect the iPad to the computer, launch iTunes and press Shift + Update button to upgrade your iPad iOS.
Go to the folder where you saved the download and open it.
Voila.

Is there a lock symbol at the top of the screen next to the battery indicator ? If there is, then depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (rotation lock or mute notifications), then you can lock/unlock the rotation by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad above the volume switch, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. If there isn't a lock symbol then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

You've tried turning off all firewall and antivirus software ? If that doesn't work then you could try downloading the 5.1.1 update via a browser :

Has anybody done iOS 5.1 on iPad 2? Worth it? Got a MSG today about it.

Many users, including myself, have upgraded to iOS 5.1 and are quite pleased. That said, I tend to be an advocate of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school of thought, so if your iPad is working without problems now and there's no compelling reason for you to upgrade - no new apps you want to run or new features of iOS 5 you crave - then there's probably little urgency for you to upgrade.
