HT4623 On my iPad there is no update software button
Trying to update my operating the system from ios4 to 6
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

I have a Iphone4. Trying to update from 4.3.3 to IOS 5 or 6. There is no 'Update Software' button under Utilities/General. Tried updating using Itunes but it comes up 'The Iphone software update server cannot be contacted' ????
iOS 4.3.3 doesnt have the "Update your Software" tab so you will need to go to itunes and back up your iphone then restore your iphone and it will download the latest iphone software (6.1.4) if you dont want 6.1.4 download your current version and hit shift on your keyboard (alt if your on Mac I think) and click restore iphone and find your downloaded software 4.3.3 then download iOS 5 or 6 and do the samething after your phone boots up from restoring it to 4.3.3.

If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

I have to update my iPad to ios7 but update software is not in my settings
I have to update my iPad to ios7 but update software is not in my settings
Then your iOS must be earlier than 5, which is when over the air updating became possible. You will have to update it by plugging into a computer running an up to date copy of iTunes, and update it from iTunes.

HT4623 where is the 'Update Software' button on iPhone 3?
Having found the page for software updates on apple info pages,
but where is the 'Update Software' button on an iPhone 3, then? There isn't one on the iPhone 3G. That model can only be updated to iOS 4.2.1, & OTA updates require iOS 5.0 or higher.
You have to update an iPhone 3G using iTunes. -

IPad 4 switches off when i am using it, even when battery is fully charged. Restore function (holding down both buttons) often does not work. Cannot power up iPad. I have updated software, restarted computer, but no success. I did restore the iPad about 8 times during the past 2 weeks. Just completed another restore. iTunes says the the iPad has been restored and will restart automatically and appear in iTunes when it is ready. That was 30 minutes ago. iPad still won't start. I am looking down the barrel of yet another fruitless restore. What a crap product.
Try a reset:
Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple logo. -
Update software button.
my ipad does not have an update software button under settings, what can I do?
What iOS are you running? Settings>General>About - Version.
If you are not running 5.0 or above, then the setting is not available.

HT4972 my iphone 3gs does not have the update software button how do i update the software
my iphone 3gs does not have the update software button how do i update it?
It isn't in the device pane. If you have selected your iPhone, then on the right side you should see information on what is contained on your iPhone. There should be a number of tabs towards the top, Summary, Info, Music, Photos, etc. Not necessarily in that order. On the Info tab is where you should find the tab. It should look like this.

Thats because you don't have iOS 5 or 6 installed.

I'm trying to upgrade to ios 4.3 on my ipad 2 but it's telling me to tap on general then upgrade software but that upgrade software button isnt there to tap, any ideas plz??
The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, as you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases if you are on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
Your iPad should be updated to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple), so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change. -
my ipad 2 needs to update to ios. I'm unable to update my apps because it does not have ios 5. The version is 4.3.5. (8L1) wahtever that is? There is plenty of capacity available. In the online help it says to be sure you have the latest version of itunes, I have no idea if I do and can't seem to update that either.
Scroll down the Support article you came here from (linked at the top of this page) and follow the instructions for updating using iTunes.
