HT4623 so I am updating my phone to the newest IOS and it has been doing it for hours.  I have now plugged it into the computer and it says that it is in recover mode and I should restore it?  What does that mean?  Do I lose everything on my phone?

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot.
