HT4623 Trying to update my iPad to IOS6

When I go to update software it is telling me IOS5.1.1 Your software is up to date..... and I tried connecting to iTunes on my MacBook Pro and still can't get it to update.... can anyone help? Is it because this is first generation Ipad??
Thanks

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • Trying to update my iPad to ios6.  Unsuccessfully.

Trying to update my iPad to ios6.  I have the latest version of iTunes.  I plug in my iPad and look at summary and shows I need to update.  I click update.  Message pops up saying I haven't backed up some items off my iPad. Click continue or cancel.  I click continue.  It starts backing things up.  I look a few minutes later and it says sync complete.  I again click update.  Same message comes up.  I click continue.  It starts backing things up and freezes a while and then window showing the process of the backing up disappears and I back at the same screen needing to update.  Getting incredibly frustrated.  It's late, it's probably simple, but I can't seem to get anywhere.  Any ideas?

Do you have a Wi-Fi network to update over wirelessly?

  • HT4623 I am trying to update my iPad to iOS6 but there is no update software option on the general screen

I am trying to update my iPad to iOS 6 but there is no update software option under general settings..please help me. Also I can not get it to connect to wireless service at home but it will other places.

Connect your iPad to iTune (computer) and Check for Updates. Backup before you proceed with update.

  • HT4623 Trying  to update my iPad to latest iOS. It connects to iTunes and appears to have done everything, to include restore from backup on my computer. When I disconnect from computer the iPad then starts from "Hello", "Select language", "Choose Wi-Fi N

It then asks me to Set Up iPad and I choose "Restore from iTunes Backup" It completes the synch according to iTunes. but the iPad screen just shows connected to iTunes. When I eject from iTunes, the iPad still shows Connect to iTunes.  No matter what I do it still shows "iPad Not Set Up"  What is Up?

  • HT4623 Trying to update my ipad 2 - went to Settings, General but I don't have a Software Update option.  Now what?

Trying to update my ipad2 - went to Settings, General but I don't have a Software Download option.  Now what?

Very old versions of the iOS prior to iOS 5 did not have the option to update over the air by using the Settings app. If your iOS is lower than 5.0 you need to update your iPad while connected to the computer you normally sync with.
First thing to do is start iTunes on your computer and use the menu to check for updates. Your iTunes must be version 11.1 so it you have and earlier version of iTunes on your computer update iTunes to 11.1.
Then start iTunes on your computer and connect your iPad. Select your iPad in iTunes and select General or Summary in the right side panel. Do a backup of your iPad next.
Once the backup is complete click on Check for updates.

  • HT4623 Trying to update my iPad 2, however in general settings there is no prompt to do this like there is on my iPhone. How do I update another way?

I'm trying to update my ipad2, however in general settings there is not prompt to let me do so. Is this iOS5 update not available for my iPad or is there another way to do this?

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed - if you are on iOS 4 then you will need to do the next update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

  • HT4623 Trying to update my ipad that already has iOS 7 on it to the iOS 7.0.4

Everything i try and download iOS7.0.4 onto my ipad it says error right before it is about to finish. I can't plug it into my computer to update it with iTunes because it is out getting fixed since my macbook pro that is 2 years old won't turn on or give me a sign its alive thank god for warranty. any suggestions on how to get my ipad updated would be great.

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Then tap Settings > General > Software Update
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
You will have to re enter your Wi-Fi password.

  • Trying to update iphone & ipad to ios6; error says "software update server cannot be contacted, Check network settings." I'm online and not sure which settings it is refering to..

is this a security firewall?  how do I allow the update and keep my system protected at the same time?

Let's try the following document with that one.

Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
There may be third-party software that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Verify that access to ports 80 and 443 are allowed on your network.
Verify that communication to albert.apple.com or photos.apple.com is not blocked by a firewall, or other Internet security setting.
Discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps under Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations.
Restore your device while connected to a different network.
    Restore using a different computer.

  • HT4623 I trying to update my iPad using iTunes. After connecting to MacBook Pro where is installed all latest software iPad is recognised as iPad, Serial Number: n/a. iTunes run recovery mode, trying to restore iPad firmware, and in the end unknown error

There was some updayts for my iPad 4 automatically downloaded. After installing it, the iPad began to restart itself every few minutes.
I tryed to update my iPad using iTunes. After connecting to MacBook Pro, where is installed all latest software, iPad is recognised as "iPad", Serial Number: n/a. iTunes run recovery mode, trying to restore iPad firmware, and in the end unknown error occured (3). Tried many times, not results. And now iPad stays only in recovery mode, can't switch it off.  How can I solve this problem please?

When I restart my iPad the connect to iTunes comes up and stays on until it shuts down again, I have read a report from Apple support suggesting I reinstall iTunes so I might try that again and also your suggestion which i shall also try, but thanks again - rg1547

  • HT4623 I tried to update my ipad air to IOS 7.1 but it shows error that "The software for the iphone was corrupted during download" How can I fix this problem ?

I tried to update my ipad air from IOS 7.0.4 to 7.1 on iTunes. I clicked download and update, it started to download normally but when download finished iTunes shows error that "The software for the iphone was corrupted during download".
How can I fix this error ?

I had the same problem. In the end I downloaded it manually. Here's the steps assuming you are on a Mac and have an iPad Air (Wifi). If not you can find other restore links here.
In the terminal (it kept failing to download in Safari):
    curl http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS7.1/031-4521.20140310.D2Ydl/iPad4,1_7.1_11D167_Rest ore.ipsw >>~/Desktop/iPad4,1_7.1_11D167_Restore.ipsw
Once the file has downloaded, move it to ~/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates/
    Quit and relaunch iTunes.
    Should now work for you.
