HT4623 Trying to update my iPod Touch to iOS 5
I'm trying to update my iPod Touch (3rd gen.) to iOS 5, but when I go through all the steps it says that the software is up to date with iOS 4.2.1. What am I doing wrong? Or is that the latest version of the software that the 3rd gen touch can run?
I suspect you realyhave a 2G iPOd. Those can only go to 4.2.1. If yours is an 8 or 16 GB one it is a 2G. Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods. A 32 GB can be either.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

I was updating my iPod Touch 5 iOS from Ver 7.0.3 to Ver 7.0.4 and myiPod locked up. I can not reset or restore the unit. The only thing it will do is show me a graphic of thr lightning cable facing up to an arrow and then to a circular blue iTunes icon. I interpert this to mean "connect the iPod to my computer thru the USB cable while iTunes is running. I do this and nothing changes. Total lock up. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Trying to update an iPod touch to IOS 6. Downloaded upgrade
I tried to update my son's iPod Touch to IOS 6. Downloaded the software but kept getting an error message when I tried to update. Now iTune indicates that the device needs to be restored but it times out with an error message that it cannot be restored.
All data, games, everything has been wiped from the device.
Help! I am just techy enough to be able to figure out some things on my own, but I have no idea where to go with this.
ThanksWhat is the exact wording of the error message?

Trying to update new iPod Touches to iOS 4.1 NOT 4.2 in iTunes 9.2.1
I have older eMac 1GHz PowerPC G4 running 10.4.11 Tiger. Have iTunes 9.2.1 because iTunes 10 isn't supported by tiger. Just bought my kids iPod Touch 2nd gen with iOS 3.1.3 on them. I have same Touch (all gotten from Apple refurbed) and mine has been updated to iPod version iOS 4.1- NOW; iTunes says when my kids Touch's are attached that the new software iOS 4.2 is available. BUT- iOS 4.2 isn't supported by iTunes 9. I have the iPod upgrade file named iPod2,14.1_8B117Restore.ipsw but how can I get that to load on my kids iPod Touches? It tries to put 4.2 on and I get an message saying something like "this is the latest software" or some such thing....
Can I make iTunes install the 4.1?? Sigh!I was able to replace IOS 4.2.1 with the real Apple IOS 4.1 through iTunes 9.2.1 by using the tips found at http://www.ihackintosh.com/2010/11/downgrade-ios-4-2-1-to-4-1-for-iphone-ipad-an d-ipod/
The tricky part is this that you must follow Steps 1-3 as it says and then only follow step one just after. When you force your iPod in DFU mode again (showing the itunes icon and USB plug) unplug from the computer running iTunes 10 and plug into the one running iTunes 9.2.1.
If the computer with iTunes 9.2.1 is a Mac running OSX 10.4, then force shut-down your mac right away. Restart your mac and then turn on iTunes only. The iPod will synch with iTunes and then you can restore from that mac or a backup.
Your music and other files will be gone but you can now use the device with OSX 10.4
Hope this helps. -
I keep trying to update my ipod touch 4th gen, and on itunes it tells me i'm not connected to the internet, even though I am connected, what can I do?
Try:
iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
Next, try doing a manual install/update using the instructions here:

So I have tried to update my iPod touch about 5 times now and it still says there is an error. I,ve erased all my settings and attempted to restore it, but it wont let me. I'm ready to throw it away and find a new product
Errors when updating leads to corrupt system files and this may be your problem. If you're using windows, connect your device to PC and run any third party app like Syncios. If it detects, you maybe in luck and try to back-up your data if possible. I hope that it won't and if doesn't, there is no other way to recover files. You should be restoring with iTunes and all data will be erased, or else your device may become unusable.

I tried to update my ipod touch software by syncing with itunes and it put the ipod into "recovery mode". Seems like the only option is to restore? Is there a way to get it out of recovery mode?
No.
Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything...
To minimise loss... Connect to iTunes on the computer you Usually Sync with and Restore from the most recent Backup...

I have tried to update my iPod Touch 4G to the latest update, I currently have iOS 4.1. After the 4 hours an error message appears saying iTunes had lost connection even when I am fully connected to the internet. I have repeated the update 4 times now with not luck. Any ideas?

I have just tried to update my ipod touch and the update failed but it has locked my ipod. All I get is a picture of the itunes logo and the usb lead. I am unable to get the ipod to move and I don't know what to do. I think I should be recompenced by Apple if I have to pay to get it fixed!
The logo is saying connect it to your computer with iTunes installed on the computer. I assume when yo do this that the iPod is not seen in iTunes. to make iTunes appear try:
- Resetting the iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Place the iPod in recovery mode. See:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
- Place the iPod in DFU mode:

If the iPod appears in iTunes restore the iPOd. If not I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. -
