  • DVD Burning Error: Unknown device error. (0x73, 0x03.)

I have been trying to burn a home movie using iDVD. I transferred the media successfully to my computer, followed all the steps, and was finally ready to burn the DVD. After waiting almost an hour through the burn process, it spit the DVD back out of my Macbook Pro and gave me the following message.
*Errors were found during the burning process:*
*The recording device reported the media error: Unknown device error. (0x73, 0x03.)*
I don't really know what this means. Was the media corrupt? Or is there a problem with my DVD player? I have supplied my DVD and computer information below. I would appreciate all the help I can get. Thank you in advance!

Using the same media I've used for years (Verbatim 4x InkJet printable) and all of a sudden can't burn from the internal drive. I do have an external burner (7 disc standalone replicator with USB/FireWire 400) and hooked that up and burned to a disc from the same spindle with no problem, and then made a 3x replicate with the same media. So it's looking like my MacBook Pro's drive is failing?

    What should be the problem?

There could be a few reasons, a common one is bad DVDs or a burner going bad.

  • Error message unknown device error (0x73, 0x03)

I created a project in FCP and prepared to burn it in DVD Studio Pro but when I tried to burn it I got this error message : unknown device error (0x73, 0x03).  Does anyone have any brilliant ideas on how to burn this?

What speed disc are you using? That burner will only burn speeds up to 8x for DL. You might also try burning at the slowest possible speed.

  • Unknown device error

I am trying to build and format a project I have completed in DVDSP4. All the files are on an external HD. I have successfully formatted 3 copies of the DVD already of this project, however, I keep getting an error during formatting which says, "unknown device error." Is this possibly related to the data being on the hard drive? If not, what is possibly causing the error.
    Thank you in advance.

It sounds more like an error with the DVD burner. Maybe slowing down the burn speed will help. But you cannot do this with DVDSP directly. You have to first format a disk image and then use Disk Utility to burn the image. Disk Utility allows you to slow down the burn speed.
To create a disk image in DVDSP, choose your hard drive in the burner popup menu when formating a Project. Instead of burning a DVD, DVDSP will create a disk image.
When you open Disk Utility, the new image should showup in the bottom left column. Select it and click the Burn button. Make sure to choose a burn speed from the pop up menu that is slower than maximum.

  • Unknown Device Error (0x0C, 0x00.) When trying to Burn

The past few days i've run into problems trying to burn from my Mac Book Pro.
In DVD Studio pro i get the " Unknown Device Error (0x0C, 0x00.)" when I try to burn from the burning on the computer.
I even tried burning from an external Lacie drive and I get the "Unknown Device Error (0x30, 0x05.)
I've cleared up hard drive space i have 5 gigs free. And I've tried restarting many times. I haven't run into problems like this before.

    Hi
That can be caused by bad quality media. Read here about * about quality media * and try allways to use first quality group.
Besides that, DVDSP is not the best burning software at all. My prefered workflow is * Creating Disc Image in DVDSP * and burning it with Toast or Disk Utility.
    Hope that helps !

  • LOOK HERE: using an ipod shuffle with windows xp/gets unknown device error

    http://www.genesoc.com/node/405
If this is similar to what's happening with your shuffle 2g ipod, I may have a weird solution. I spent a few nights troubleshooting this issue and searching many many sites and forums for solutions, all without success. Everytime I plugged the ipod in, XP gave one of the errors at the above URL. I did confirm on another pc that the shuffle was definitely working, because it updated and synched flawlessly. What I finally did to solve the issue was........... remove service pack 2. I know that's a bass ackward solution but it worked! I can now plug my shuffle in and it works everytime, perfectly. The only thing I can say for sure is it's something to do with usb 2.0 on my motherboard. It's a via board btw, with an apollo 333 chipset. Try it for yourself, and let's see if it works. Apple or some other company(you know who) needs to release a patch for this as it seems to be a very common problem.

  • Trying to burn a DVD and getting "unknown device error

Using a 3.1 ghz Intel i7 with 16G and 10.8.2 purchased a few months ago.  Never had an issue until this morning.
SO, I tried another of my external Superdrives and get the SAME error...

update: I seemed to have fixed it with a disconnect of everything and a total reboot...let's hope it stays working.
However, I use FCP, output to Compressor and then drop those files into DVD Studio Pro to burn.  Have been doing it that way for years and have never had an issue...hoping it was just a **** on my computer's end and not a sign of major issues ahead.

I bought this Macbook Pro a year ago to the month and only now after a few hundred DVD burns using DVD Studio Pro 4.2.1 I've kept up with updates and kept this machine clean. So why all of a sudden do I get this message??
Thanks in advance for any help in this matter

Could be a dirty laser or the drive is going, definately get to Apple if you can (unless you have longer Apple Care, in that case do not rush.) Also check your media, could be bad media. Do you try deleting preferences? Do ta hardware test show any issues? Lastly have you tried burning a disc image from Finder and not straight from DVD SP?
As an aside, not sure how many a few hundred DVD burns were, but in a year it may be a big number to me on one MacBook Pro(?) I usually buy inexpensive external burners and leave the internal to burn when I am on the road and otherwise leave it for installs of software.

  • My iphone 4s keeps coming up as unknown device since i upgraded to ios 7. it will not activate

ive got an iphone 4s which worked fine before i upgraded to ios 7. now it is stuck at the activation screen because it keeps telling me my device is unknown. i have tried activating it over wifi and through itunes but no luck, itunes tells me that there is a problem with the device and to contact a service centre. it has an active sim card in and all worked fine before, now i have a very expensive paperweight and im getting very annoyed. apple want £25 just to talk to me which i am not paying as i think its ridulous that i have to pay for thier **** up. does anyone have any adive or had this problem before?

Ok I just got pass the error CONNECT TO iTUNES and UNKNOWN DEVICE. I can not gurentee this will work for anyone else. This is what I did and it worked out:
    CONNECT TO iTUNES error
    1. I removed the sim card and put the device on charge for several hours, the display switch between the Apple logo and the connet to iTunes logo.
    2. I launched iTunes and connect the device to the computer while the display was on the Apple Logo (not connet to iTunes logo).
    3. I put the device in DFU while still on the Apple logo.
    4. I forced a deliberate error while attempting to restore by selecting a older iOS firmware (iOS 6) and click restore (I got the error, maybe this step does nothing but things changed from here).
5.At this point the device remained in DFU mode and restored to the current iOS 7.0.4 firware.
    UNKNOWN DEVICE error
    6. After restore the device went into searching, at this point I put the the sim card into the phone
    7. Select Language and Country, the device error Unknow Device (this might be as far as you can go).
    8. I took the sim card out and let the phone rest.  After an hour or so the device completed the search and read No Sim.
    9. I put the sim card back into the phone  and the phone activated.
I tried evething online and nothing worked. This is what worked for me. Hope this helps, good Luck!

  • Work-around to "unknown device" problem

I found a work-around to the "unknown device" problem, a pain to do, but much less painful than any alternatives I've found so far.
In my case, I can connect my Ipod one time. After I eject it, if I reconnect, I get the Unknown Device error. That's where this work-around comes in.
There is an INF file (a Windows hardware configuration file) in the Windows\INF directory that has a name that will be specific to your computer. Once you determine that file, you need to re-install it. Re-installing it allows the Ipod to be recognized the next time it is connected. These are the steps:
    1) Determine the file name on your computer. You only need to do this one time, and then remember the name. Using Regedit, navigate to HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-44455354 0000}. Then do an Edit / Find for "ipod" without the quotes, making sure that "Data" is checked and "Match whole string only" is not checked. It should find "Apple iPod USB Driver" in the "DriverDesc" value in one of the sub-keys. There will be another value called "InfPath". The data for that is the file name for the INF file on your computer. On my computer it is oem51.inf. It will be something like that on yours.
    2) In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Windows\Inf and find that file. In addition to "oem??.inf", there will be an "oem??.pnf" (same numbers), which is a binary version of the .inf file. Delete that file, or rename it if you prefer. If it exists, step 3 will not work.
    3) Right click on the .inf file and select Install. The computer will chug for a few seconds. The .pnf file should reappear and, more importantly, your iPod should now be able to connect one time. At least it does for me.
I hope that Apple puts out a fix for this problem sometime soon. Meanwhile, doing steps 2 and 3 every time I want to connect is annoying, but bearable.

I would like to apologize for posting this message. I promise that it did work and did seem to be the solution at the time I posted it, but it helps me no longer. My Ipod was recognized several consecutive times after I posted this with no work-around, but then it became an unknown device again, and there it stays, seemingly forever.
I am a highly skilled and experienced Windows system programmer, and this has me stumped. I apologize for any time that my message may have wasted for others. I have also tried every other solution that has been posted here and elsewhere, and none work.
I would recommend that Apple pay me a lot of money to find and fix this problem. Short of that, they should pay someone else to fix it. To have this many fatal problems for so many people should be considered unacceptable. Until a fix is available, I shall just be happy that I got as much onto my Ipod as I did before it became unavailable.

  • Recording device error on DVD DL -HELP!

    Hi there,
I have problems burning a Dual Layer DVD with DVDSP 4. I'm using DVD+R DL Verbatim as the media in a DVD-RW DVR-111D. But it keeps sending the following message:
"Recording device reported the media error: Unknown device error (0x73,0x03.)"
I've tried direct from SP and with Roxio Toast v. 6.1.1.
    Any idea what's going on?
    Comments and suggestions are welcome!
    Desperate Marissa =(

What speed disc are you using? That burner will only burn speeds up to 8x for DL. You might also try burning at the slowest possible speed.

From your statements above, it sounds like you never tried to burn a CD for at least the first year that you owned the laptop, as it had a one year warranty on it. While you might have used it frequently to install software,  play DVDs, Blu-Ray disks, etc, that's unclear from your statements. Nonetheless, it might just be dirty-dusty. So, before deleting-uninstalling any software, and given they're cheap, try a CD-DVD Cleaner Disk first and see if that resolves your problems.
Let us know what happens. Good luck.
