HT4623 Update ipod touch to ios 5

I'd like to update my ipod touch to at least ios 5.  There are games and apps I'd like to download that require the operating system to by at least a 5.
My ipod touch is saying I have the most up-to-date software.  Any advice?

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
Identifying iPod models
iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

I am trying to update ipod touch from ios 4.3.2 to ios 6.1.3.  I have it connected to my computer, and the summary in itunes indicates the update is available.  However, when I click "update", it opens Windows Explorer and waits for a file name to open.

I am not at that computer now, but I did check via windows update & with the check updates menu choice in the itunes program  - neither indicated a newer version of itunes is available. (it is a vista computer).
The itunes software on the computer displays my ipod & the current ios (4.3.2), and indicates a newer ios is available (6.1.3). When I choose "update", I am taken to Windows Exploer and prompted to choose a file to open. it is as if the "update" button has the incorrect code attached to it.
The ipod is working, but there are several app I would like to install, but I can't with the current ooperating system.

    Try the following:

Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Connect to your computer and sync
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

Just note that the backup that iTunes makes does not incklude te apps themself, music, synced photos and some other stuff.  See:

There are third-party prgrams like those discussed here to trnasfer non-iTunes purchased music to a computer.

After you transfer the stuff to the computer then make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer and right clicking on the iPOd under Devices in iTunes and select backup. Then restore the iPod from that backup.  The restore will update the iPod.

  • HT4972 Can I update iPod touch from ios 4.2.1 to latest SW version?

iTunes show "this version of the iPod software (4.2.1)is the  current version". Is that mean Ipod touch can't update iOS to higher version?

On that iPod touch model, yes.

  • Updating iPod Touch from iOS 4.2.1 to 6.1.6?

I'm trying to update my (computer illiterate) boyfriend's iPod Touch for him, and I backed everything up successfully. Yet, sadly, iTunes is telling me that if I update iOS it will delete everything. Can anyone help me out? We'd appreciate it.
    -Mandy & Jeremy

If you follow these instructions the iPod will be updated without loosing anything. However, this computer will mow be the syncing computer. You will have to repeat on the computer normally used for syncing.

  • After updating ipod touch to iOS 5 it doesn't connect to itunes (or computer) any more.

After updating my ipod touch 4G to iOS 5 it doesn't connect to itunes (or my computer) at all.
itunes shows an error. I can't turn it on or off either. i can only see the black screen with the apple while it's (aparently) working.
my itunes is the latest version, that shouldn't be the problem.
    can anyone help me?!

The updating on the iPod only is a feature of iOS 5. yu first have to connect to your syncing computer and upadate to iOS 5. After that you can do subsequent updating via wifi without a computer.

Also, my App Store also says I have an update but I don't. All my apps are up to date when I try to update... Why is that?
