HT4623 what if the software update isn't there?

what if the software update isn't there ?

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

  • HT4623 What if the "software update" button isn't there?

Does anyone know what to do if the "Software Update" button isn't there? I probably sound really lame, but I want to update to the iOS 5.0 for the iPad 1.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

I download the software update but the update did not installed

Did you do this download on the phone, or in iTunes? If on the phone, after the download did you select install? Same with iTunes, did you select update and install or just download? What did it do? Is anything showing on your phone?

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 on your iPad then you can only update via your computer's iTunes, as described half-way down the page that you posted from.
To update via a computer, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes and selecting 'Backup' (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC)
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
Your iPad will be updated to the highest iOS version that it supports, which for a first gen iPad is 5.1.1, and for other iPad is iOS 6.1.3

  • My macbook pro needs to be updated but when going to the software update it says there are no updates. its incredibly behind.

my macknook pro is incredibly behind in updates. however when selecting software update it says there are no updates. i can't do much with it due to nothing running on the software i have currently.

To get to the next release of OS X, which is Snow Leopard 10.6, you must purchase the install DVD for it from Apple.
This is the next required upgrade from 10.5. Once you get there then you can consider upgrading to newer version if your MBP will support them.

  • HT4623 Under "General" the "Software update" is missing!!! why? and obviously I canot update.

Software update option is missing in the General menu, why is that? and I cannot update my software.
    HHHEEEELLLLLPPPP

Start iTunes on your computer and use the menu to check for an update to iTunes. If there is an update available download and install it. Then restart your computer.
Once your computer has restarted start iTunes on your computer and connect your iPad.
In the left column of iTunes on your computer select your iPad. In the right column select Summary and look for the Check for Update. Click on that if it doesn't bring the update message up automatically. Follow the prompts to complete the update. The update is a big file so be sure to have a good Internet connection. You might also have to disable your virus protection software and firewalls if either are turned on.
After you reach iOS 5.1.1 future updates for the iOS can be installed directly on the iPad over a Wi-Fi connection.

  • HT4623 What are the iOS updates after 5.1.1

I am trying update my iPhone operating system.  I currently have version 5.1.1  updating to 6.0.  Seems to be having issues.  I am thinking I need to update from an earlier update before ver 6.o.  Where do I find those update files?

Thanks Deggie... this solved my problem.  I am not sure to use the legend that gives out point for the help.
I figured it out ... I went back to the email and clicked it there.  Thanks!

  • My problem is I am running OS 10.5.8, and the Software Update button says there are no new updates. How do I get from here to the latest OS version? I also can't update my iTunes because of running this old 10.5.8.

I need help updating my OS from the 10.5.8. It is causing a variety of problems in turn.

10.6 is the next OSX.  It is not just an update of 10.5.
Call 1-800-MY-APPLE to order a DVD: $19 for single user license disk, $29 for s 5-user license disk.  With Amazon charging much more than $19 for a songle disk license, I purchased a 5-user disk in case I need it and ONLY Amaazon is left.

You cannot update it if you can't get the latest version of iTunes. Actually, the latest version of iTunes will run in XP if you have Service Pack 2. Also, you posted in the iPad forum, and your profile shows you have an iPad, but in your post, you say it is an iPod. Is it an iPad or an iPod?
