HT4623 Why can't I update  my iPad 1?

Why can't apple support an update for iPad original to iOS 6 or later...many apps require it????

First, a filter would be good and would make if easier to find. You should suggest this to Apple. But every app in the App Store already does tell you what version of the OS is needed to run it. Read it's description. It's not as easy, but will sabe you time in the long run.
Second, your've misimformed about installing old versions of Apps. Apple does allow you to install legacy versions of applications but this is entirely on App develoeprs to make them available. What you may understand is that it is expensive and time consuming for developers to support multiple versions of apps on legacy operating systems. In addition, many new apps take advantage of hardware and software features of new devices that simply do not exist in older hardware. Because of that, and other incompatibilities with developer back-end data makes using and supporting those old versions impossible.

  • HT4623 Why can't I update my iPad  running 5.1.1

Trying to update iPad software. Has 5.1.1 and says I'm up to date

No.  You have an iPad 1st generation that will only run iOS 5.1.1.  It does not have the capability to run a higher version of iOS.  You could always sell it, and put the money towards a new iPad.  Or some other device that meets your needs.
The iPad is just like a computer.  One that came out 3 years ago might not be able to run the newest version of OS X, iOS, or windows.
    Good luck.

    Why can't you?
If you are running an iOS version lower than 5, you'll need to connect your iPad to a computer running iTunes and update through there.

  • Why can't I update my iPad 3G to IOS 5? It is stuck at IOS 4.2.

Why can't I update my iPad 3G from IOS 4.2 to IOS 5? iTunes says that no upgrades are available for the iPad but it updated my iPhone 4 and iPod Touch to IOS 5.

No idea. What exactly is it that you see when you connect to iTunes (provide complete text, please).
But, before doing that, bring both your iPad and your computer/iTunes combination back to a 'clean' configuration; on the iPad do a Reset, on the computer at a minimum log out and in of your user account (in OS X,  or whatever the Windoze equivalent would be) or if you prefer just do a Restart. If any flags are incorrectly set anywhere that should set them back to their proper states and, if that happens, you'll be in business when you connect and will see the update available.

Why can I not update my iPad first generation to the latest software?

Which version of iOS is supported is a decision made by each
individual software developer. If there is an app that is not available
in iOS 5, contact the developer to see if they can provide a version
    compatible with your iOS.

Why can't I update my iPad iso 4.2 version? I go to setting and it does not have it like it should. Why does apple have to make things so freaking hard! Help!

If you have an original iPad 1, the latest version of iOS it can run is iOS 5. So you should be able to update no problem.
Update iTunes to the latest version (11.0.2). Then simply plug your iPad into the computer and open iTunes. Click the iPad either in the sidebar or the top navigation bar. Then attempt to update the software. If it doesn't work, please post the exact error message.
Note that it would be wise to first ensure you back up the iPad.

  • HT4623 Why can't my 1st generation iPad update to iOS 6?  Memory is not an issue.

Why can't my 1st generation iPad update to iOS 6 when memory is not an issue?

The first gen iPad has a slower processor (A4) than the iPad 2 (dual-core A5) and iPad 3 (dual-core A5X) and 4 (A6X), and it also has less memory - 256 meg, compared to the iPad 2's 512 meg and the iPad 3 and 4's 1024 meg. My first gen iPad got noticeably slower with iOS 5 than it was with iOS 4, so I doubt that it could cope with iOS 6.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.0.4. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
You can no longer update to iOS 6.x, or down grade the iOS.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and antivirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.

  • Why can't I update my IPad 2 to IOS 5? Itunes always say "The connection has timed out" whenever I tried to update my IPad 2.

I've already tried my best to update my IPad 2 into IOS 5 since it's lunch into the world. So I open up my Itunes in my PC, connected my IPad 2 with the cable, and clicked "Update". So then I waited for a while till I finish all the steps or whatsoever. Then ITunes's bar showed something like "Downloading software for the IPad" "12 hours remaining" So then I waited and waited and waited, 9 hours are remaining and suddenly a window poped-up saying that my network connection had timed out and i had to try again even when my internet connection is really on the fast lane. I wonder if it's my IPad's problem or ITunes. Please help me to solve this problem.

Sadly there are some 'bad carriers' out there.  If you have a VERY long download(and iPad OS updates can be 100s of megabytes) and the carrier has  an interruption in service(router reboots, modem disconnects, etc) iTunes will timeout.
You might want to try updating later in the evening when usage starts to drop off(kids go to bed, people start watching cable instead of Netflix/Hulu) or early in the morning.
The other alternative is to update at a friend's place who might have a better carrier or is on a better subnet
