This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • HT4623 Why does my IPad not have a Software Updates button in my General tab?

Why does my IPad not have a Software Updates button in my General tab?

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
To update, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
Your iPad should be updated to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple), so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change - though google do have app versions in the store

  • Why does my iPad keep cutting out?

Why des my iPad keep cutting out? I can be using an app or surfing the net, and it cuts out an reverts to homepage.

Try closing all apps completely and then do a reset and see if that helps. To close all apps : from the home screen (i.e. not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
To reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
If you are on iOS 5 then you could also try turning off iCloud and multitasking gestures on the iPad.

  • Why does my ipad randomly drop out of wi-fi?

My new ipad 4 (the retina one) keeps dropping out of my home wi-fi network. Randomly, when playing music or just browsing it drops out and I have to go onto settings to tap on the network.
    Thanks in advance. :)

    Try #5.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Why does my Ipad take me out of my apps?

I will sometimes be on an app and it just takes be back to my home screen... why?

The iPad is crashing for some reason.
Try this and see of it helps.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
You can also try closing all apps, restart the iPad and see of that helps.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Why does my ipad keep timing out

My ipad keeps timing out saying server timed out every time I search the web or try to check my email

Maybe your firewall is causing the issue. Security/antivirus software can cause problems as well. Try rebooting your router. Sometimes that is all that it takes to keep you conected to the internet.
Unplug the router from the power source for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in again. Restart your iPad as well. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Why does my Ipad keep cutting out on my household wi-fi?

We have wi-fi in our two story house, with a desktop upstairs and one downstairs also. Both work well, so we have confirmed no problems with the ISP.
However, the brand new ipad air (not wi-fi plus cellular) seems to have intermittent reception at best- very unreliable. Sometimes our reception is fine- like right now- but other times- such as this morning, the ipad seemed to recognise our network, but we got "not connected" under Wi-Fi on the settings menu. I can't undersatand how the ipad can be "not connected" while identifying and appearing to connect with our network??

  • Why does my iPad throw me out of some apps.

I have a first addition iPad. On several games I will be playing and it will throw me out shortly after starting the game. What can I do to fix this? Thank you for any help.

    Standard troubleshooting...
Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider if, it comes up. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
Remove all apps from Recently Used list...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Tap and hold any icon in this list until they wiggle
    - Press the red to delete all apps from this list.
    - Press the home button twice when done.
If still a problem restore with your backup.
If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

  • HT4623 Why does my iPad say it has the latest updates 5.1.1, when there is a 6.0 version available? How do I update my IOS ?

I can not seem to update my iPad I am stuck on 5.1.1 version. There are a few App updates that require I have iOS 6.0, however my system is saying that there are no updates available.

so how do we use apps that require ios 6?  That doesn't seem appropriate to limit those of us who have been with an ipad from the beginning and see no reason for a new one when this one works just fine.
