HT4623 Why doesn't my I phone 4 have a software update option in the general settings?

I have an I phone 4 with a 4.2.7 ios. Why isn't anything in my general settings that says software update?

That option comes after updating to iOS 5 or later via iTunes.
Install iTunes 10.7 on your computer and update your iPhone via iTunes.

... and the option to update the software from the iPod using Settings/General is not available on iOS 4 or earlier.
You can get free Apps with iOS 3.x - providing they will run on the version you have. That's dependant upon your model of iPod. So before anything else, which version of iOS do you currently have on your iPod and do you know which model you own?

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • HT4623 my first gen i pad does not have the software update selection on the general settings screen.  How do I update software.

My first gen iPad does not offer the software update option on the general settings page.  How do I update without this selection

That only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases - you may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

Updating from the ipod itself is a feature of ios 5 or later.
You would need to update as always.  Turn on computer, open itunes, connect ipod.
The first gen ipod will only go to 3.1.3

Plug it into itunes with the USB cable.  The over the air update feature is a new feature, not part of iOS4, so you do not have it to use until you update.

  • HT4623 What if you do not have a software update prompt in the general screen...how do you install iOS 5?

I am trying to download IOS 5.1 on iPad2 but do not have a software upload prompt in the general screen.  How do I upload IOS 5.1 without this prompt?

Connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes, click on the iPad name on the left side under devices and then click on the Summary Tab in the iTunes window on the right. Click on Check for Update. After you install iOS 5 on the iPad, then you can update in the future right from the iPad in the Settings>General>Software Update.
Make sure that you are running the latest iTunes on your computer before you update the iPad.
