Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media. You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else. As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC. Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.

Could be several reasons, the first being not enough available memory. You also could be trying to update on a computer where iTunes is not up to the required release. You could be having trouble accessing a very busy server. Point being ...you need to say a little more about your specific problem to receive helpful advice.

If you have a 3G iPod it may really be a 2G iPod. If it is 8 or 16 GB it is a 2G iPod. Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods. A 32 GB one can be either. To identify ours see:

Did the iPod connect before?
Try:

The iPhone 3G has received all of the updates it will get. The latest iOS for the 3G is 4.2.1 (I believe that is right). The OTA update was in iOS5.

My iphone works!!! But it wasn't from rebooting (although rebooting gave me the idea to try Plan B, so thx very much for inspiration). I rebooted several times and nothing happened. Then, I decided to download the FindMyiPhone app (in case that had something to do with it). I downloaded the app from the app store on my iphone--NOT through itunes on my computer. (Tried that and failed).
After I downloaded the app, I had to go into iphone Settings "Mail, Contacts.." and key in my Mobile Me info. (Also, make sure Push notifications is ON; this is also in Settings) Next, I enabled bluetooth and then tried to connect to our wifi home network. As soon as iphone "discovered" the home network, I opened itunes, and the first screen asked me how I wanted to set up my phone.Yippie!
I don't know if the FindMyiPhone app had anything to do with it or if the iphone just wanted me to key in all of the MobileMe/itunes account stuff, so you'll have to figure out that one for yourself. I would be willing to bet, though, that this process will work with ipods as well as iphones.
Now, if I can just get rid of this splitting headache...

ios 7 is simply the operating system. Anything such as pictures facetime everything else involved with your apps etc, will still be compatible between the two devices.

I am not getting any sound at all on my ipod. I am not sure what happened to it. I tried a game feature and there is no sound and it does not seem that my ipod is on mute. I tried Pandora which I usually listen to everyday and there is no sound. What do I do?
