The minimum requirements (processor, ram, etc) don't meet the requirements for the current version of iOS. Apple determined that the original iPad was not robust enough to run iOS 6 without degrading the user experience being degraded beyond their level of an acceptable costumer experience.
More or less if you want the newer versions/features it is time to upgrade. I can say that most likely every 2-3 years is the upgrade cycle for iPads.

I restarted and it works!!! I held the home button and the lock button until the apple appeared. All is good in the world again!

Not particularly happy at having unwanted software installed with no real warning, and no opt out available.

This has been an ongoing thing. There is an updater that blindly installs McAfee and another that installs Google Chrome and Toolbar. People have been complaining about it for years, and it doesn't change, and it won't change.
I'm not being condescending, and I'm not trying to lecture you on this. I'm just stating the facts. If there had been any intent on anyone's part to do something about it, posts like this wouldn't pop up here every month and a half, like clockwork.
It's the number one reason we post the FULL installer links. Because they have NOTHING IN THEM but the Flash Player plug-in.

You have downloaded software from untrustworthy sites like CNET, Softonic, Download.com, Macupdate and the like : they often enclose crap in the installer: download only from trustworthy sites.
2. I recently installed Intego security software , these sort of tools are counterproductive, or crap.
ad 1: your mac has indeed been infected: download AdwareMedic from thesafemac.com (A very trustworthy site) and run it, it will solev the problem. Then uninstall Cocktail: rubbish and counterproductive.
ad 2: uninstall the Intego software.

When I try to send something from my iPad pages via email to be opened on my desktop in Pages, it won't open in Pages. I get a message that it can't be opened because the version is too old. I sent the document as a PDF and it worked. But I want to be able to use Pages back and forth. HOw do I update the Pages version on my desktop iMac?

The file format used by the iOS versions of the iWork apps can only be read by the new iWork apps on your Mac - i.e. Keynote 6, Pages 5 & Numbers 3. Those versions for the Mac require Mavericks, OS X 10.9. The "too old" error on a Mac comes if you are trying to open an iWork '08 or earlier file in the newest apps. If you do have the newest apps you can open the files from your iPad.
If you can't or don't want to upgrade to Mavericks & the newest iWork apps your best option would be to export/share the files from the iPad to a type an older version of iWork can read such as Word, text, Excel, etc.
Or contact AppleCare. They made this mess, let them fix it.

You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. We spend all this money for the latest ipad and all we get is these $5 video and music apps from apple. Why create the iOS platform and only offer so so apps like IMovie and GarageBand ? While other developers are offering much better apps like pinnacle studio for video, Cubasis and Auria for music production, apple has not showed much growth in terms of innovation. While there's nothing wrong with making an app like GarageBand where "anyone " can make a song, how about something for real musicians or an app not so basic as it get for video editing? After spending 0ver $700 on an ipad I'd be willing to spend more than $5 for a better video or audio app.

First, try a system reset although I can't give you any confidence. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.
