The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

You must be running iOS 5 on the iPad to have that feature in your settings. You need to updgrade using iTunes first. you can about how to ugrade here.

Hi. I worked on a logo yesterday. This a.m. I got software updates and did it automatically. I don't know what the updates were but I just did it and then the computer restarted. Now all my parts have been merged into one un-editable un-workable image. They are not separate any more. They are not grouped, not compounded, not locked. I do not know what happened. Any ideas? Okay, that means with the latest iOS software, it requires the latest version of iTunes on the computer. Which computer OS platform are you using. Now you are saying that after downloading the latest version of iTunes that your iPhone is not being recognized by iTunes? Completely different thing, and the iTunes on the iPhone has nothing to do with that anyway. The iTunes on the iPhone is just for purchases.
If you are having trouble with the iPhone being recognized by iTunes, use the appropriate link for your computer OS for assistance.

Software update on the iPhine is only available after iOS 5.
Plug it inti your computer and upgrade with iTunes.

If you're not on iOS5 or 6, you can't update wirelessly with "software update" on your phone. You need to plug into iTunes on your computer and update from there.

The phone is in restore mode and the picture is telling you what to do. Connect the phone, by cable, to iTunes in the computer you normally use for syncing, and retore the phone.
