Reading about the Flashback Trojan malware. How can I check to see if I'm infected? Could it be what's causing Youtube to run badly?

Q: I already have a Revel account. What do I need to do? What do I need to know about this?
A: If your Revel account uses the same Adobe ID as your Photoshop.com account, your JPEGs will be moved there. Otherwise, a new Revel account will be set up for you using the same Adobe ID you use with your Photoshop.com account.
Revel accounts can be merged manually. Use the Adobe Media Downloader to download all of the JPEG photos from your Photoshop.com library and then upload those photos to your existing Revel account.
Click here to archive your Photoshop.com library so you do not lose any files.
You will be asked to download an Adobe Air application called Media Downloader

As of May 1, you can choose to keep using your mail after MobileMe ends, even on devices that don’t meet the iCloud system requirements. Just go to me.com/move and select the option to keep using your email after MobileMe ends. Once you have completed this short process, your mail will continue to work on devices that don’t meet the iCloud requirements after MobileMe ends on June 30th, 2012.

  • HT1620 So what do I need to know about  using my iPad on public networks, say restaurants, etc. Can I use passwords of any kind, or will I be compromised?

So what do I need to know about using my iPad mini on public networks, say in restaurants. Will I be compromised by using  passwords? What protects my iPad?

To date, the iPad/iPad mini/iPhone/iPod Touch produces have remained secure.
In a public place, you do not control the network, so be careful of what activities you perform, such as accessing your bank, or other sensitive places.
Just surfing and reading your email is generally speaking not a problem.  Hopefully, your email connections are over secure SSL connections.

My daughter will be getting a new 5th generation touch today. She has a 4th generation touch now. What do I need to know about transfering informaiton from one device to the other?

    See:
iOS: Transferring information from your current iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device
Unless you restore from an encrypted backup, y will have to reenter all password on the new device
    iTunes and encrypted backups
You can protect your backup with a passcode using the Encrypt Backup option in the Summary tab. Encrypting your backup will back up your Keychain. This way, your email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords that you enter into websites and some apps will be remembered when you transfer to a new device. Learn how to create and restore from a backup.
When your backup is encrypted, you'll need to enter the password when enabling or disabling encryption or when restoring from the backup.

  • What do I need to know about fonts?

Can anyone explain what I need to know about using fonts on a MacBook Pro running Leopard, or point me to a good reference or tutorial? I've never paid much attention to fonts in the past, as I only use a few in print (Arial, Verdana, Times New Roman, etc.), and I never did much with fonts in my graphics work. But I want to take a closer look at fonts and start experimenting with them. Looks like a surprisingly big topic.
On my PC, I was limited to how many fonts I could display by memory. As I understand it, there's no such limit on a Mac running Leopard.
I encountered references to fonts when I installed Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office for Mac, so I need to figure out how to manage fonts, then go back and check the installation disks again.
Right now I have three font folders in username > Library: FontCollections, Fonts (empty) and Fonts Disabled (empty).
I also need to learn about the different kinds of fonts (e.g. True Type, etc.) and how/where people obtain them, though that's probably beyond the scope of this thread.
But before I do any more research via Google, I'd like to narrow the field a bit. I was hoping someone could give me a basic overview or point me to a good reference. What software do you use to manage fonts on a Mac, and do you have any basic tips to offer?
    Thanks.

  • Selling my Photoshop CS3 online, what do I need to know about serials?

I now have CS5, which means that my CS3 has become obsolete.
I have never registered the product, but have used the serial number to activate it on a couple of occasions. I am now using a brand new computer, and so, haven't got Photoshop CS3 installed at all. I plan to sell it on eBay, but am worried about the serial number being unusable for the new user. Is there anyway to 'deserialise' or deacitivate the serial number so that a new user can install and activate as if it were a new product.
Thank you for taking the time to answer, if you do :-)

That would be absolutely illegal—and you would be ripping the buyer off.
Once you used CS3 to upgrade, you can not sell it legally, nor would it activate for a different user.
The only way you could sell it would be by selling the entire Photoshop license you own, including  CS5.

  • "What to do now if I had the Flashback Trojan?"

I just did a software update (was overdue) that included the java security fix, and was immediately informed that the "OSX.FlashBack.iv" malware was found and removed.
Does anyone happen to know how serious a threat the malware presents, how to assess any potential damage it may have done, and what I might do to minimize any after-the-fact damage?

I'm pretty sure I would go to all the sites I could remember signing into that had significant financial data of mine on them and change my passwords. If I used the same password on multiple sites (I don't) I would change all those, as well. I already check all my transactions on a daily basis due to a mysterious Credit Card compromise a few months back, but if I wasn't, I would do that. A site called mint.com (run by Intuit) makes it easy to see everything at once, but the in order to do that I have to provide significant information to them.
I did go to all of my credit card/bank account sites and changed my user names and passwords. And this time, I'll print the info out, but won't do what I've done before (which was to store that info in a spreadsheet that I had saved to my drive).
As far as mint.com or any other third party is concerned (including the online backup-service companies), I simply don't trust them and/or don't have high enough confidence in the security measures they have in place to hand over my personal info.
I would certainly endorse the use of Little Snitch as being worth the time, money and effort to install, setup and maintain. It's not for everyone, but I've used it for years to keep track of what information leaves my computer. During the period when it first alerted users to the existence of the Flashback "N" variant I gained new respect for it's capability.
Thinking about Little Snitch again...I think I read somewhere that FlashBack checks out the system it has targeted and doesn't install itself if it detects the presence of Little Snitch. (If true, I don't know how FlashBack got into my system.)

  • What do I need to know about field order and HDV?

I keep seeing field order options in FCP and DVDSP and Compressor etc.
Can anyone point me to any resources that will help me understand things a little better?
    I'm editing HDV in FCS.
    Thanks
    Miller.

Field dominance (actually field order) is a function of how video is recorded.
Each frame of interlaced video is made up of two fields. They are recorded in sequence. At NTSC std video (~30fps) the frames are recorded 1/60th of a second apart.
We will call the first field recorded: #1 and the second field: #2.
To play back correctly you need to play the fields in the order they were recorded
if done correctly it would look like this
    1-2 1-2 1-2
if the fields are reversed (by using the wrong field order setting) you would get
    2-1 2-1 2-1
This yields a jerky, strobe like playback as the fields are being played not in the order they were recorded.
HDV records the Upper field first in each frame and so is termed Upper Dominant
DV record the Lower field first in each frame and is termed Lower Dominant
Questions? There will be a quiz on Monday. And NO, it is not open book.
    Cheers,

  • I want to install Windows 7 in bootcamp on my imac with Lion 10.7, but only have a Windows 7 upgrade disk.  I also have a full Vista.  Can I install in bootcamp using the Windows 7 upgrade disk?  If so, what do I need to know about how?

    Hi,
I want to install Windows 7 on my imac in bootcamp.  I have a windows 7 upgrade disk and a full vista disk.  Normally on a PC I would install Vista, then upgrade to Windows 7.  I see that bootcamp 4 only supports Windows 7.
Can I install the Windows 7 upgrade disk without first installing Vista?  Will this work in bootcamp?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Install 7. Don't bother with applying drivers and such, just reboot again from DVD and install again, it will see the existing system and this time activation will be possible.
Vista is mess, takes longer etc. Hope you have SP1 version of 7. And for Vista, only SP2+ are even supported now, by MS.

  • FAQ: What do I need to know about file associations when I load  Photoshop CS6?

Use Windows control panel to establish the file association.
This solution uses Photoshop as an example. For any other product, replace that product's filename extension and executable name with the product and file type you are attempting to restore.
    Windows 7/Vista
    Choose Start > Control Panels.
    Change to list view:
    Double-click Default Programs.
       4.  Click Associate A File Type.
       5.  Select .PSD from the list.
    Click Change Program.
If your desired version of Photoshop is listed, choose, it. Otherwise, click Browse to locate it and click Open.
Ensure the "Always use the selected program..." option is selected. Click OK to close the Open With dialog box.
Double-click an .PSD file to ensure that it opens with your preferred version of Photoshop.
On Windows 7, click the View By pop-up menu and choose Small Icons.
Windows Vista, click Classic View in the upper left.
    Windows XP
Choose Start > Control Panels > Folder Options.
           Click the File Types Tab.
           Select PSD from the list.
Note: If you do not have PSD in the list of extensions, skip ahead to the next section, Create a filename extension.
           Click Advanced.
Select the Open action, and click Edit
Click Browse and navigate to the Photoshop.exe for your version. Select it and click Open.
Note: Make sure that the resulting value in the Application Used textbox has the following syntax, especially the "%1" (with quotes included). If it does not, manually edit the field contents so that it does:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Photoshop.exe" "%1"
Select Use PSD and click OK to close the New Action dialog box.
Click OK to close the Edit File Type dialog box.
Click Close to close the Folder Options dialog box.
Double-click an .PSD file to ensure that it opens with your preferred version of Photoshop.
How to associate files for Photoshop CS5 with Bridge CS5 and Photoshop CS6 with Bridge CS6
    1. CS6 assigns all standard graphics files to be associated with CS6 and thus causes Bridge CS5 to invoke Photoshop CS6.  The objective is to have Bridge CS5 invoke Photoshop CS5 at least for chosen file types.  Ensure neither CS5 nor CS6 is invoked.
    2. In the Win7 Start Menu search box, type "file association".
    3. Select the "Change the file type associated with a file extension".  This starts a window titled "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program".
    4. All of the graphic files are assocated with Photoshop CS6.   For those files you want to associate with Photoshop CS5, click on the chosen file extension (e.g. .cr2, .nef, .psd, etc) and click on the "Change Program" to associate the extension to Adobe Photoshop CS5.  (note.  this step seems to be a necessary operation since, when I simply modified the Bridge CS5 file type associations, Bridge 5 did not honor the change).
    5. Start Bridge CS5. Choose "Edit -> Preferences -> File Type Associations".
    6. For each file type you wish opened in CS5, change the association from CS6: choose the "Browse" option and locate the CS5 version of Photoshop.exe".  This is probably in Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)/Photoshop.exe. Click on OK to complete the association.
Now you can invoke Bridge CS5 and it will properly invoke Photoshop CS5.  If you invoke Bridge CS6, it will invoke Photoshop CS6.  If you use file manager to invoke one of your selected file extension types, it will start Photoshop CS5. Other graphic files will start Photoshop CS6.
If you wish, you can go back and reassociate the chosen types to PhotoshopCS 6 - but your Bridge 5 will still invoke PS5 for your chosen extensions since the Bridge-assigned file associations takes priority over the windows default program.
