HT4718 Can't access my EXISTING OSX 10.8.1 Recovery Partition

This computer is a non-retina mid-2012 MacBook Pro.
Using DiskUtil in Terminal shows the correct disk configuration:
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:  GUID_partition_scheme                        *750.2 GB   disk0
   1:                               EFI                         209.7 MB   disk0s1
   2:            Apple_HFS Macintosh HD            749.3 GB   disk0s2
   3:            Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3
However, booting up with Cmd-R just goes to the Internet Recovery, and booting up with Option Key shows 2 identical Macintosh HD icons - selecting either one boots the system regularly from the Macintosh HD; no Recovery Partition shows up.  I had two eligible computers and the first one was updated directly from the App Store; this one was done with a bootable USB drive.
35 years into the "microcomputer revolution" I really hope that someone can suggest a solution other than "reinstall the operating system."  Not that I don't appreciate help, but this should be fixable with a less drastic solution. The parition is there, something needs to be told to recognize it.  Also, I don't know that reinstalling will produce any different results, although reinstalling directly from the App Store might "turn on" whatever is "turned off."
Thank you.

This is completely normal. By booting OS X Recovery you are accessing the Recovery partition.
The Recovery partition is normally hidden, since it is intended to be for "emergency use only". As a longtime computer user, this may understandably annoy you, but there really is nothing you ought to do with it.
Reinstalling the OS won't help since it will just recreate the recovery partion, even if you reformat or completely replace the drive.
You may see suggestions from users from time to time to reinstall OS X. This scatter-shot approach is almost never justified on a Mac, since most problems are due to conflicting or poorly written third party software unrelated to the OS, and a reinstallation won't help.
Replacing a failed hard disk is one valid reason to reinstall OS X. It's difficult to come up with any others.
See the diskutil manpages to determine how to mount the recovery partition so that you may examine its contents (which are read-only). You'll then be able to get yourself into all sorts of trouble.
This excerpt from the Lion Ars Technica review may save you the time:
Doing so reveals the partition as a normal HFS+ volume. The top level contains a directory named com.apple.recovery.boot which in turn contains a few small files related to booting along with an invisible 430MB internally compressed disk image file named BaseSystem.dmg. Mount that disk image and you find a 1.52GB bootable Mac OS X volume containing Safari, most of the contents of the standard /Applications/Utilities folder (Disk Utility, Startup Disk, Terminal, etc.), plus a Mac OS X Lion installer application. In other words, it looks a lot like a standard Mac OS X installer DVD.
That was the idea - to eliminate the need for a system recovery DVD.
As you can see the recovery partition probably won't have much to interest you anyway.
To get a better impression of how all this works (N.B. the following is NOT for the faint-hearted):
Clone your system to an external volume
Boot from the external volume
Completely erase your internal HD, removing all existing partitions
Unplug your external volume and boot OS X Recovery
Reinstall OS X

  • How can I access my user folder on a second boot partition?

Hi there. Thank you for reading this. I am at a bit of a loss although I have searched several forums to find someone having the same problem:
I use my Macbook Pro in the office and at home. To keep things strictly apart and have to separate Time Machine backup procedures, I have divided my harddrive into two boot partitions ('office' and 'private') and installed Mountain Lion on both of them. Now occasionally when I am at the office I would like to access my  user folder on 'private' to retrieve a file from the documents folder there (e.g. a paper I gave in my free time but would like to send to a colleague). Now although I see the 'private' volume, and the other user folder and the Documents folder in it with a red 'No Access' badge, even when I  set read/write permissions via Command-I > Permissions for my current account, I do not see any files in it apart from Microsoft User Data. I have tried enabling the root user but with the sam result.
Do I really have to shut down the computer and boot with the 'private' boot volume in order to access the files on 'private'>user?
Looking forward to your suggestions! Thank you in advance!
    Christian

To solve this issue permanently, is to first disconnect both TimeMachine drives.
Boot into one partition and consider it history, make a note of everything, apps, export bookmarks, serial keys and files to a regular external drive. (non TimeMachine)
If on a hard drive, consider the first partition for performance, the second one is going to be slower. (SSD no need)
Next what you do is boot into the first partition and use Disk Utility to erase (with zero option if a hard drive) the other partition. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the first partition to the second. (should be about equal sizes or tweak before cloning.)
Repair permissions on both partitions in Disk Utility.
Next boot into the second partition and install/uninstall apps and files. etc and set it backup up the way you had it.
Once your sure, then update TimeMachine for each one.
Now you will be able to easily access the other bootable partition as long as your logged into the same account name on the first partition., in other words you can access the same named account on both partitions and trade files without rebooting.
Because it's a clone, you have the same access privileges to the files on the other partition.
If your a power user, your going to find bootable clones are a much superior option than TimeMachine

    Hello,
Perhaps one of the discs is not labeled correctly.  Try going through all of them to see if one of them works.

  • OSX Lion Booting to Recovery Partition every reboot

    Howdy All -
So this has been going on for about 6 months, but ive been lazy to fix it and the solution, while anoying (I dont reboot often) isn't terrible. Its time however to see if I can get to the bottom of it and or at least fix it permanently.
    Issue:
Everytime I reboot, the system boots to the recovery partition. Disk Utility from within the RP finds no issues. Every subsequent reboot after below repair, goes to the RP.
    Solution/Delay tactic:
Boot to my Disk Warrior cd and rebuild the boot volume, next boot, fine, boots to the os. DW always shows no errors in the volume, btw.
Next boot however, no matter the length of time in between, boots to the RP.
So I know my options are basiclly to restore\reinstall in some fashion, so some questions about that:
    1. Can I just rebuild the mbr in some way? (sorry, I support M$ all day... is there even an mbr on a hfs+ disk?)
    2. If I select the restore from backup option, basically, im installing a new copy of lion, then restoring timemachine on top of it with the particulars?
         - does it format the drive, so to speak? TM recovers everything specific to the users after (assuming I have everything slected on the boot drive of course)?
Any ideas on what I can do to not do a restore for a permanent repair? Or how I can see more in a log somewhere about what the deal is?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Can you access files on OSX system from OS9 system on the same iMac?

The apple software updater was updating my OSX4.6 to 4.8 but there was not enough disk space so when the window that told me that appeared I just clicked on shutdown. When I try to start my iMac again all I get is the Apple Logo screen with the animated wheel. So I am assuming that the OSX updating screwed up my OSX's ability to boot. Ok - so I thought I would reinstall my original Tiger software but I do not have enough hard disk space to do that. So I booted to OS9 which is still on my iMac and removed what files that I could, but still not enough free space. From OS9 I do not see any of the files that I have on the OSX desktop so that I can delete some of them. Is there some way for me to access the OSX hard disk or desktop files from OS9?
    Bruce

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Any files on your OS X desktop are OK to delete, but not the desktop folder itself. That desktop folder is found in your Users -> yourname folder.
    See my FAQ On http://www.macmaps.com/safetodeleteormove.html
to understand how Mac OS X is structured, so you don't delete something by accident.
Free up at least 15% of the hard disk before attempting to boot back into Mac OS X. This amount is arbitrary, but has been found to be the best amount of space to use Mac OS X in.

  • Can't access my existing FormsCentral account since security breach

I have not been able to determine how I can reach the staff about an issue I've had since the recent "security breach" that resulted in the rest of passwords.
I started an account with an email address (let's use [email protected] for the purpose of example), but have since changed email addresses (we'll say [email protected] for continued example). In my settings, I could not determine how to change the email address for the purpose of logging in since I no longer have access to [email protected], so I changed the settings to send all notifications to [email protected] and continued to login with [email protected]
That seemed to be working fine until the recent automatic password updates caused by the "security" concern. In the process of automatically renewing my password (which I had to do with [email protected]) I can no longer login to my existing formscentral account (where I have about a dozen forms being actively used). When I try to login with [email protected] and click "Forgot your password" it sends the reply to the email address that I can no longer access.
Someone PLEASE HELP. I need to be able to reach my original forms and figure out how to prevent this in the future.

  • Updated to ACR 8.4 now bridge can't access it. OSX 10.9.2 (latest version)

Just update to ACR 8.4 and now Bridge will not access ACR. Photoshop will, but not bridge! I'm on a MBP runnibng OSX 10.9.2. Any help?

    Hi bboob
You reinstalled CS6 PS and then updated to 8.4 or was that your only option?
    must be 8.4.
I'm in the same sinking boat, and since Adobe has kept the 8.4 updater live, I think there might be a couple more to join us.
When you spoke to Adobe, were they aware of the problem, or were you the only person in the entire world that had this problem..... except for me and the other people that have posted.
I have not seen a report from the CC group.
Any chance that you also have Photoshop Elements on your computer too?  I noticed that the updates included something for that too.

  • Can't access pre-existing Behance portfolio because it's associated with a different email address than my Adobe ID

I have a Behance profile of long-standing as ChrisARaymond, and multiple projects, all connected to a gmail address. Now I cannot access it because my Adobe ID is connected to a different email address. I get an endless loop as Behance refuses to let me sign in with my old credentials, and when I sign in via AdobeID, my profile and projects are empty.
Did your programmers think through what you were doing before you implemented this? It's beyond ridiculous.

This is simply and utterly one of the most inconsiderate of all Adobe takeovers. Did you not think artists that use Adobe products might have accounts already with Behance? You have screwed us. Not only that, there is NO way to talk to anyone about how to fix this. I do NOT see anything in this forum on how to fix, why? Big corporate decisions and more money. You suck Adobe.

I think that you have to have Win 8 bootable to get into the recovery program.  I believe that if you can find an exactly identical computer you can make recovery media on it or you can buy it from Toshiba.

  • How can I manually install software from recovery partition?

    Hi,
I'm looking for information about how install preinstalled software after OS upgrade.
As far as I can see, it is done through 3 different locations:
    Recovery partition (D: drive)
    SMINST Folder (located in %Windows%)
hp Folder (invisible folder in C
First step is to identify the machine (brand/model) to allow installation.
    Then, scripts will install packages.
It should the be possible to manually install the software from the recovery partition.
As far as this software is bought with the computer (so part of the price) and there is no way of getting the original installers from the support website (only updates available), it would be "fair" to be able to perform a manual install...
Is there anyone with this knowledge?
Thx in advance for your help.

I cannot believe no one replied to you.   I am having the same problem.  I can print but not scan thru the MFNP feature. I'm not sure how/why it is working for printing.   I setup the print driver on all my client laptops to my wifi router/access-point such that its SNMP-enabled on channel 1.  The MNFP port said 161 on the printer when it was working.  Not sure these two protocols are the same... SNMP and MNFP.  I think the latter is Canon's own protocol...not sure how to get it to work with my network. I have a Netgear RV6300 access point connected via wired ethernet to the cable modem which is by Arris (one of those all-in one routers/switch/WAP -- but I'm using the Netgear as my WAP for my WLAN, although the printer gets a DHCP assigned IP on the main router - 10.0.0.9)  At one point I had it set up as static IP 10.0.0.200.  Maybe I will switch back to that...don't know if it will fix scanning though.
