Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
     Lion System Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
           or Xeon processor
       2. 2GB of memory
       3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
       4. 7GB of available space
       5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • HT4597 how to purchase OS X Lion

moving from mobile me to Icloud. how do I purchase and which OS X Lion do I upgrade to?

You need to have the latest version of the Snow Leopard (10.6.8)
After you open Mac App Store, you'll notice the top paid app as Mac OS X Lion
Click on it and hit the "Buy" button. It will take a while to download as it is large in size.
It will take 15-20 min to install Lion.
    You're good to go!

  • HT4718 how can i get osx lion its not on the app store and i have factory reset my macbook pro and now cant download even though i brought it a year ago?

i might be stupid, but i cant find osx lion which i paid for a year or so ago, all it shows is mountion lion which i would have to buy. anyone have any ideas as to how i can redownload lion osx, 10.7.5 thanks.

Hopefully, you saved a copy of that ill-designed installer which deletes itself during the installationi process, necessitating wasting resource DLing it over and over again. Sheer madness and toatlly anit-green in behavior.

  • How do I redownload mountain lion for a clean install on the same machine without purchasing again?

I purchased mountain lion and upgraded my OS.  The system seems to still be having some issues and I'd like to do a clean install with the new OS.  How do I redownload mountain lion so that I can make a bootable disk and do my clean install?

You should be able to just go to the App Store and select Download again. If that doesn't work, try holding down the option key while selecting "Buy".
    Good luck,

  • I purchased and installed lion on my iMac. How do i install it on my Macbook without paying for it again?

I purchased and installed Lion on my iMac. How do I install it on my MacBook without paying for it again?

You'll have to download again.  You will not be charged if you use the same Apple ID.
Save the file somewhere before installing.

  • How can i get mountain lion reinstalled if my mac says apple id never purchased? hd failed 2 wks after wty expired, I am the original owner, i have done command-r

how can i get mountain lion reinstalled if my mac says apple id never purchased? hd failed 2 wks after wty expired, I am the original owner, put another hd in, done command-r & sys reinstalled, but it wanted to update & now am stuck. I don't mind paying for mountain lion; it is too far to get to an apple store. but, i only have one mac, so i cannot download with another mac. lots of other apple, but only one mac.

You will need to do a network recovery:
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I am selling my Mac Mini. I recently purchased OS X Lion. When I restore to factory settings, how can I ensure that the operating system will still be Lion, and not the original operating system, which I believe was Snow Leopard?

If you bought Lion from the App Store, you can't legally or practically transfer it, because it's tied to your Apple ID. Reinstall the original software from the discs that came with the machine.

Nope. You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD for $29.00 through an Apple retailer or ordering from AppleCare:

  • How to purchase Lion..., How to purchase Lion...

I want to completely restore my whole Macbook White 2010. Which i bought second hand from eBay which came with Lion, Applications, upgraded RAM and GB. I have had it for a month, but it has been playing up slightly... I tried to downgrade to Snow Leopard using his Macbook Pro 13' disks which wouldn't work do to the version difference. I do have a restore disk on the Macbook which i can restore the MacHD on Disk Utility. However, i want a completely restored Macbook. Like new.
It says i have already got Lion installed, which i have. However, i need to purchase it again so it is under my Apple ID and i can do a recovery of it using the re-install Lion option. Obviously, it won't let me buy it again due to it being already installed. I am not sure if the re-seller is installing Lion and App's on his laptops wrong or not. I contacted him and he made me send it back, so he could install it all again.
I am wondering, how can i re-install Lion completely with no USB, Disks or not having it bought by my Apple ID. I would rather not to buy the USB do to the price tag and waiting for it. Is there anyway to purchase it digitally, as i already have it installed so it won't let me.
    Thanks.

Patience. Everyone here is just a fellow user; no one gets paid to monitor these forums and respond in minutes.
Anyway, you should be able to boot into the Lion Recovery partition by restarting the Mac and holding down the Option key, then selecting the Recovery partition. That would get you the ability to erase the drive and do a fresh installation. You can also build a recovery partition on an external hard drive or USB flash drive via the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant:

Buying the Lion USB flash drive would probably be the simplest way, despite the cost and delay (no Apple Store nearby to buy it at?). Note that you will lose whatever applications are installed on the machine now when you erase the hard drive to reinstall Lion and set the machine up from scratch. If you have the discs that were originally shipped with the MB, you'll be able to reinstall the Apple apps that are included on them after Lion is up and running.

  • How to restore OS X Lion from an Ebay purchased Macbook

So I recently purchased a Macbook from Ebay and am now trying to re-sell it.  It came with a fresh installation of OS X Lion and I want to reset it to be sold.  When I go to the Apple Store it tells me Lion is already installed on this machine and becuase I didn't purchase Lion from my Apple ID I can not re-download it.  How can I restore a fresh copy of Lion to sell it?

Did this machine come with Lion preinstalled originally, before you bought it, or did the previous owner upgrade it to Lion?  You may not know the answer to that question, but I would guess (based on how long machines have been shipping with Lion) that it would be the latter.
The problem with the latter case is that Lion was purchased by someone else, and you do not technically own it.  The solution would be to reboot from the original system disks that came with the machine, erase the hard drive and reinstall that system.  Don't try to purchase and install Lion on the machine before selling it, or the buyer will have the same problem down the road at some point.  If the buyer wants Lion, they can buy it with their own Apple ID.
Of course, most likely you didn't get the original system disks when you bought the machine.  Most people selling Macs don't include the disks, unfortunately.  If that is the case for you, contact Apple.  They will send you replacements for a small shipping & handling fee.

  • HT4718 How do I use recovery system to install lion on a mac that originally had snow leopard and has a new hard drive?

Just installed a new hard drive, I'm trying to reinstall Lion from internet recovery. The issue I'm having is when I try to install the OS it gives me an error message. According to the log, this is because it can't find the Mountain Lion install file from the app store. How do I reinstall OSX lion without any discs? I have a bunch of blank cd-rs and dvd-rs, as well as an external hd at my disposal...

Internet Recovery is only an option on more recent systems: Those that shipped with Lion, and a few that shipped shortly before Lion (so, mid 2010 or newer Macs):

There are ways to burn the Mac App Store installer to flash media or optical media, Google for "create OS X Lion DVD."

  • I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install?

I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install on my 24" Imac?

As long as you use your Apple ID to purchase it, I don't see why they wouldn't let you download the installer on one of their Macs and put it on a pocket drive.
Or, a friend with a high speed connection?
I agree with you about the delivery method, just trying to help you get what you want.

  • How do i intall mountain lion on a new hard drive

    How do i do it?
I bought a new 13" MBP a few weeks back and have now got my SSD. I realise that Apple no longer give out OS install discs and i don't have mountain lion purchased on my app store as it came with my laptop. So how do i install mountain lion on my new hard drive without having to buy mountain lion.

Option 1  - Newer Mac's like your come with internet recovery. Which means if your drive fails or is corrupted or in your case your install a brand new drive, internet recovery will let you reinstall the OS you are eligible for. So replace your drive and boot your system with cmd + R keys pressed down for 15 secs or so and your machine hooked to the internet. This will install ML from apple in your case.
Option 2 - Clone or backup (your entire system using time machine) your hard drive to a external USB disk. Replace your drive and then restore the new drive from the clone or backup.
