HT4718 If I reinstall OSX, will it erase my files?

If I reinstall OSX, will it erase my files?

It's difficult because the OS X volume can't be shown so you can't access to the files inside, so you will probably have to use an application like DiskWarrior or a data recovery company in order to recover the files. Note that you should make backups of your data to prevent this situation, so you have a copy of your files and nothing would have happened with your data.
Apart from that, you can find hard drives at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ HGST drives have a good reputation and work correctly

in disk utility, below Macintosh HD I have 4 trojan "decryptedFile.dmg (flash player)" and my computer is super slow, does erasing Macintosh HD will also erase these files?  If not how can I erase? (bear in mind computer so slow a click takes forever)

Thank you Thomas in fact I have seen your guide before  and had gone thru the steps including repair disk which didn´t work. I am erasing disk before checking hardware. I have posted a photo of the 4 decrypted files in the disk utility and also of the adobe icons in the dock and question marks. Some people say if the adobe appears in the dock is because it is the trojan flash player and they keep jumping in the dock.  If this is not malware it seems to be an incredible coincidence that when I start seeing these things in my dock and the decrypted files in my disk utility is when my computer goes so slow (I am typing this in my macbook air because to write this message in my imac would be about 6 hours, I am not kidding, it is completely useless at this point it took me 2 and half days too instal mac os x after disk repair, it took me 3 days to transfer just 100 gigabites and now is taking the whole day (and it says another day more) just to erase the disk. Despite all this the icon of adobe keeps jumping in the dock so, although I am no computer and mac expert, just an user, I am inclined to think that it is malware and it is a shame that mac doesnt´recognize it or have anything here to help me get rid of this.  I am not even sure if erasing the disk will work since repairing didn´t work... all advice is welcomed.

  • If I reinstall OSX will I lose my apps?

I want to reinstall OSX - Finished a year at uni and have a load of stuff I don't need. Just want to wipe and reinstall so it's fresh again. Problem is I have a couple of apps I downloaded from app store (cheap ones like angry birds), but couple of more expensive ones like Call Of Duty. Will I lose all these? Is there anyway of backing them up to re-install?
    Thanks, Christian.

First, unless you have a good reason - and just having "a load of stuff" is not a good reason - a clean reinstall of the OS is extreme on a Mac.  It should only be necessary for very severe problems.
Second, if you wipe the hard drive, then everything not backed up will be lost, of course.  However, note that you can re-download apps purchased through the Mac App Store, so they won't be truly gone.
As for backups, see my Mac Backup Guide.

  • If I reinstall OSX will I lose data?

My 4.5 year old iMac has got some sort of glitch.  When I turn it on it does not progress any further than a blue screen.  Sometimes some error messages appear to say that something or other had quit unexpectedly.  The error messages had three options ignore, report and relaunch but I was unable to select any of them.
I took it it the Genius Bar and the bloke there was able to start it when he plugged something into it and said that the data was still there.  He did some diagnostics and the hardware was all ok.
He seemed to think that there was a problem with the operating system and that if I had access to another Mac I might be able to treat it as some sort of external drive and retrieve the data from there, and then re-install the operating system I might be able to sort it out even if that meant wiping everything off and starting again.  Unfortunately my allotted time ran out.
I am now the owner of a MacBook Pro, I have plugged them together and I can see the other computer but Finder only says 'connection failed'.
Back to my original question if I use my original Install Discs to re-install OSX, will this mean that I will lose everything?
    Cheers,
    Cameron

    1. Doing that requires using a FireWire connection and starting up the iMac with the T key held down. Ethernet and wireless connections require a bootable OS.
    2. No. Back up the data anyway; see #1.

  • Reinstalling OSX: Will Time Machine read previous backup through interface?

Or will I only see backup through Finder?

Provided you are simply reinstalling Leopard on the same hardware and nothing else is changing (particularly your computer name in the sharing preference pane), Time Machine should be unaffected.

  • Reinstalling OSX- will it Mess up rEFIt?

right now i need to reinstall snow leopard. will this have any effect on refit and the partitions it has created?

No. However, you might want to reveal exactly what your trying to accomplish and why. If you're having issues, try to solve them first. Reinstalling isn't the first troubleshooting step, but the last.

  • HT4718 if I reinstall Lion will I have to partition the HD again?

My partition drive permissions is not letting me acces the drive and when I try to change the permissions it says custom and won't let me change it to anything else. I have tried to fix the permissions in Disk Utilitiy but still nothing. So I figured I would just reinstall lion and hope that it will fix it.

Installing Lion won't affect any of your applications or data, unless something goes wrong. Nevertheless, you do need to make at least one full backup before you install it. In fact, you need to do that anyway, whether you install Lion or not. Any data you don't back up will inevitably be lost, sooner or later.
Applications that were created for PowerPC Macs only, such as Quicken 2007 and Office 2004, won't work under Lion.
Lion is at least as stable and usable as any other Mac OS version, provided you don't try to run incompatible software. The only safe way to find out whether it will work well for you is to copy your internal disk to an external one and install Lion on that. If you don't like it, all you have to do is reboot.

  • Reinstalling OSX Problems After Erasing HD

    Hi all,
I'm in a tricky situation- I am preparing to sell my 2010 iMac (A1311) and so I have securely erased my hard drive using a 10.6 install disk. I was running Mavericks before erasing, but I didn't want my Apple ID associated with the computer when I sold it so I wanted to install 10.6. The computer worked perfectly before erasing, and the erasing process was smooth and with no problems.
Then I tried to restart the computer so I could install 10.6 on my newly formatted HD. However, after I hold the "option" key down when powering up and select the 10.6 Install Disk as my one and only boot-up option, I get stuck on the grey screen with the dark grey apple logo. I've tried several keyboard as well as an external disk drive and I'm getting the same results.
What could the problem be and how should I fix it? I can't access Disk Utilities because I can't get past the grey screen.
Again, I'm a little stumped because the iMac has no hardware problems and the disk worked perfectly on another machine earlier in the day.
    Thanks!

What you tried should have worked and the disk is loading if you can see it with the option key held down. Try restarting while holding down the C key.

  • Will leopard erase my files and applications

when i install leopard will my applications like photoshop, illustrator, etc. get erased? and what about my other files?

As others have pointed out, a bootable backup is the ideal solution. Dismount (please ask if you don't understand how) the backup after finishing making it and disconnect before installation. My FAQ* here explains how to make backups:

  • How backup User and reinstall osx only

My MacBook Pro (06 / 2009) running OSX 10.9 Mavericks didnt want to open completly this morning. 6 hrs later i havnt fix it. Reading and trying.
-- How to make a backup now ?
I want to save some création of mine. Last backup was 1 Month old on timemachine on external USB drive.
-- How to reinstall OSX without deleting my User files and maybe my applications Adobe ?
I have Osx 10.9 Mavericks on machine from free Apple update download. But computer came with 10.5.7 when order from Apple. Also bought 10.6 Snow Léopard  on CD.
-- What i have done so far
    Reboot. Reset. Pram. Safe mode.
    Single user #reboot
    Single user # /sbin/fsck -FN
Restart from installation CD to disk utility to verify disk
    Results : nothing
    Disk0s2: i/o error
Invalid sibling link. The volume needs to ne repaired.

I suspect it's a bad idea to boot from your Snow Léopard disk (even with the accent) to try to repair Mavericks.
You could see if your hard drive will mount on another Mac in Target mode: How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode , then you could backup your créations.
I would not backup anything more than your essential documents. If you restore system files, you will probably restore the problem.
If you haven't already: Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
    then restart.
if that doesn't work, you could try the recovery partition again and reinstall Mavericks over your current installation.
If you can't boot into your recovery partition, then try to boot into internet recovery: Hands on with Mountain Lion's OS X Recovery and Internet Recovery | Macworld , and use Disk Utility to repair your HD.  similarly, if that doesn't work, you could try to erase your HD from internet recovery and reinstall Mavericks.
if that won't work, you could try TechTool, which can occasionally fix a problem that Disk Utility can't. Techtool Pro 7
if that doesn't work, then your HD is probably failing and needs to be replaced.

Tried running disk repair from HD recovery, not repairable.  Trying to reinstall OSx Lion, says disc is locked.  Do I have to erase the drive and lose everything?  I also have Bootcamp installed, will boot to Windows no problem.

    Hotrodmkviii,
try rebooting in Recovery mode, but when you reach the Mac OS X Utilities menu, run Terminal (from Utilities in the menu bar) instead. Inside the Terminal window, give it the following command, and then press the Return key:
    diskutil list
Please include in your reply the output from that command.

  • Can apple erase a hard drive with filevault 2 turned on and then reinstall OSX?

Can I take my MacBook Pro to an apple store and have them erase the hard drive and reinstall OSX? If so how much will that cost me?

I believe that's pretty much your only recourse if you forget the password and didn't write down the recovery key or choose to store it with Apple.
If you chose to store it with Apple, you can have them retrieve it for you if you answer the three security questions.
Really, with FileVault, the recovery key is crucial. You MUST keep a safe copy of it.
