HT4718 New iMac (March 2013) has no recovery partition ?

Hallo,
i contacted Apple support because of a problem with an external USB 3.0 hdd after sleep mode. In some cases the external hdd will not be recognized
after sleep mode by Mac OS 10.8.5. For checking something the Apple engineer said i should reboot by holding the Alt key.
After reboot the engineer was  astonished that my new iMac has no recovery partition. The iMac starts a recovery by internet connection but if i understood him correctly a brand new iMac must contain a recovery partition.
What can be the reason that a newly bought iMac does not have a recovery partition ? I contacted my dealer (German online store) but I did not get an answer until now. My newly bought MacBook Air has a recovery partition.
Please excuse my bad English.
Greetings Jan

  • Can I install a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB into the new iMac late 2013?

    Hi There,
    1)   Can a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD be installed in the new iMac late 2013 model?  (My plan is to remove the existing 1TB HDD and replace with the Samsung SSD)
1.1)  I have heard somewhere, even though it will fit, Apple's logic board firmware will pick up the non-apple product and render the iMac useless until original hard drive is reinstalled.
1.2)  If it will work, will I loose my warranty on iMac?  Note, the SSD will be installed by an Apple authorized workshop.
    2)     Can 2x 2.5 sata drives be installed in the iMac?
2.1)  I know the iMac only has 1x SATA and 1x PCIe slot, but can one not install a PCIe - SATA converter and also a 2x 2.5 drive bay in the place of the existing         3.5" drive?
    Thanks for your assistance.
    Regards,

I checked on the Samsung website and the 840 Pro is OSX compatible and should work in your MBP.

  • My SVD132190X has no recovery partition. Recovery discs from Sony may not have worked. (Error 393)

Hi there, my computer (SVD132190X) has no recovery partition due to the beta release of windows 10. Since I wanted it back, I got the recovery discs with the words SVD1322xPX. When I use it though, I get an error saying 393. I'm certain that I didn't set up raid and didn't add a hard drive. Any help?(Sidenote: From what I heard, if I do need another hard drive, then where can I get a speaker cover and its hard drive?)

    Hi ReSummit,
    Welcome to Sony Community!
The probable cause for code 393 is the RAID configuration. You mentioned you didn't modify or change this right? Please follow the steps here and change the RAID configuration back to RAID 0 and then try recovery: How to use the RAID Configuration Wizard with the Recovery Media Kit.
If still the same, then probably you're having a hardware issue or corrupted recovery discs. You may visit https://sony.encompass.com/ to purchase parts and accessories, and even recovery discs for your unit.
    Hope these helps.
    Thanks,
    Vincent

  • Persisting crashes with brand new iMac late-2013 27-inch (14,2)

    Please help!!!
Last week I purchased the latest iMac late-2013 (14,2) 27 inch with everything top range directly from the Apple Online Store. My configuration in a nutshell is the iMac (of course) with wireless keyboard and magic mouse, attached to it through Thunderbolt a LaCie 5Big (10TB) external drive as well as a USB connected WD MyBook (2TB) for Time Machine and a USB3 connected WD MyPassport (2TB) for those files I want to keep mobile between my devices, all of this on OSX 10.9.1. Futher details on the hardware below:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac14,2
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          3.5 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          8 MB
      Memory:          32 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          IM142.0118.B00
      SMC Version (system):          2.15f2
My problem is that it keeps crashing... sometimes while doing some Final Cut X or Logic Pro X but other times while simply copying files between hard disks while Time Machine is running and everything else is closed... I can't figure out what the root cause or the particular event that triggers the crashes, thus they are quite unexpected and pretty abrupt - no warning signs at all.
I read in some of the threads that the 3rd party RAM may cause some problems but my 32Gb RAM came directly from Apple as configured while purchasing.
Here is the latest report my system gave me and I know some of you folks are pretty good figuring out what these messages mean. I will most likely get in touch with Apple support but before I do, I wanted to check with you geniuses before I spend hours on the phone with Apple support. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Oh. You didn't 'splain that. In this case here's a suggestion for a start:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can't Install OSX Yosemite on iMac Mid-2009 Stuck - No Recovery Partition PLEASE HELP

I had an old iMac Mid-2009 2GB on OSX Lion, which had been kept away in the garage for a while. Pulled it out, ran Lion fine. It was going to be set up as a new computer, so I downloaded OSX Yosemite, planning to wipe and re-install after installation. Took a lot longer than I expected. After a while, the apple logo progress bar froze. I googled it and many people said just to wait it out, it could take up to 12 hours. 1 week later, still there. Fairly confident that nothing was going on on the hard drive. I reset the PRAM, didn't help. So I tried another fix I found which involved booting into the recovery partition. Guess what, no recovery partition . So finally I went to the trouble of creating an install usb. Booted fine, so I went into Disk Utility to erase my hard drive and re-install. But guess what, I couldn't! Can somebody please help! Or is this iMac stuffed?

Finally figured out the solution. My internal HDD appears to be not working after that faulty Yosemite installation. Just got a fast external HDD, plugged it into the iMac. Booted from the USB, went into Disk Utility and formatted it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in GUID. Installed and got up an running fine. Finally fixed this after 3 weeks! Hopefully this will help anyone that has the same problem.

The system crashed on my first attempt but appears to have partitioned the drive correctly before crashing???  So, what size partition does Windows 8 need to operate effectively?  Is "more" better??? or just over-kill?  And, has anyone installed Winodow 8 on an iMac...and how did it work?  Would apps like "Parallel Desktop" or "VM Ware Fusion" be a good idea and troubleless?
I will try again but not too confident that it may get worse before it gets better.
    Regards....?
P.S.  I configured this iMac with the i7 processor 3.5GHz with Turbo Boost to 3,9GHz.  When I select "About this Mac" it diplays my i7 processor as a 3.4GHz instead.  Do you think they ran out of the i7 3.5GHz and shoved a i5 3.4Ghz in the iMac to meet deliver schedule???  I there a way to check the real-time speed of my processor??.

It depends on your uses. See > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3321 Windows 8 works properly in Boot Camp, always that your iMac is compatible > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US You can only use the 64-bit Windows 8 edition.
Respecting to your processor, you may want to contact with Apple, as they may have sent you the iMac with a wrong processor

  • Why can't I play games on my brand-new iMac late 2013?

Every time I try to play a game on my iMac, the screen looks like it freezes or lags so I cannot even close the game, or even close the iMac, so all I can do is force shut down it. Any suggestions except giving it back to the store I bought it? Did I spend 2249 Euros for nothing?
Processor: 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB

For Grand Theft Auto, the only version I found that "Officially" still run native on the Mac and are in the Mac App Store are Grand Theft Auto II I released in 2010-2011 and Grand Theft Auto Vice City released in 2012.
The more recent versions of GTA IV and V are PC ONLY. NO official Mac OS X version for these.
There are no other versions available on the Mac App Store! so those should run on your Mac with little issues as it is designed to run on OS X 10.6.6 and later OS X versions.
From the GTA website posted in Feb 2014,
    https://support.rockstargames.com/hc/en-us/articles/200147266-Macintosh-system-r equirements-and-specifications-for-Grand-Theft-Auto-III-Vice-City-and-San-Andrea s
AND, the GTA web link does not mention any support for OS X 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 OR 10.10.
So, I am not sure what versions of these games you purchased and where, but it would appear the recent versions of these games are NOT OS X supported.
You would need to install the proper version of Windows on your Mac to play these games.
If you are running the latest Tomb Raider that is available on the Mac App Store either Tomb Raider Essential or Tomb Raider Underworld, both should be able to run on your Mac. Tomb Raider Underworld runs on OS X 10.6.6 or later and Tomb Raider Essentials runs on OS X 10.9.1 Mavericks and later.
You might be having issues with these on OS X 10.10 Yosemite as users are still having issues with the new OS X.
Did you ever play these under OS X 10.9 Mavericks?.
I suspect issues with these games under Yosemite as Yosemite, itself, uses more hardware overhead. Based on numerous issues posted here about Yosemite, seems Yosemite is more taxing on both RAM and the GPU.

Thanks for this mha007 - I can now open FF with a new profile. Can I copy my settings from the old profile or will this bring over the same problem, maybe a corrupt file. If it would bring the same problem, is there any way I can check which file is corrupt, apart from taking them over one by one?

  • MY MAC MINI WHICH I PURCHASED USED HAS NO RECOVERY PARTITION

Im a Mac newbie, not a computer newbie since I have been a power PC user since 1985. But there are things that are extremely different with Mac. Windows for example, if I were to damage my boot drive, I could just pop in a USB drive that could boot that perticular version. Then it had 2 options. Install or repair. Often it was just a matter of maybe I changed hardware around. The disk or drive would repair the MBR and all was good. I just had the same thing happen to me with the Mac. I plugged in a 8 GB thumb drive and downloaded the latest version of OS X Mavericks. Not knowing what to do next, I clicked next. Picked the thumb drive. Then it restarted. Holy cow, nothing. Thank God I had a CCC of the original partition. Was able to boot the computer than went to the Disk manager and repaired my internal SSD. I do still have the second hard drive with the now updated clone of my working drive but I really wanted to use that drive which was the original 1TB drive from my mac mini. I replaced that one with a 250 GB SSD. Then I moved my HOME folder to a 3TB Promise Smartstore DS 4600. That unit has the Apple firewire 800 and so my mac mini is very fast. There was no way I could use the SSD for everything.
Anyway, drifting here. Is there a way like windows has to have a small partition on my SSD that should I screw something up like I did this morning, I can press some F button, a repair option comes up and Viola its all repaired with out having to plug in a different hard drive.

No, I have owned 2 nice laptops in the past but ended up selling them quickly out of frustration my work at the time required so much PC software that it was annoying trying to figure out what I needed. The 2 laptops just seemed like expensive toys to me. I always thought Sony was quality and have had 4 expensive Sony laptops besides all of the PC towers I built. Well my first Sony laptop is still running from way back in 2001. No battery though. But the last one I purchased 2 years ago. Full of bells and whistles. Intel I7 quad core, same as my mac now. It worked famously , installed a 250 gb SSD the same one now in my Mac. One morning it just wouldn't power up. I could always handle a crashed disk or something but no power. I said the **** with it. No more PCs besides I've had multiple iPhones now and multiple iPads . They have been wonderful. Still require windows sometimes but now I've got Windows 8.1 in BOOTCAMP plus OS X Mavericks. It doesn't get better. I'm using the Mac OS  first now every day only going to windows if needed and that is less and less. So short answer. I have only one Mac for now. But I refuse to purchase another PC. Everything Apple is much more money except the Software. I like the FREE OS updates instead of depending 500 bucks every time Windows comes put with a new OS. Lots to get used to since I've been all PC since 1985 and my first dual floppy drive PC followed by my BIG 10 MB hard drive PC. Then someone told me about a 1gb HD. You kids can't imagine that when I was born B&W TV had just come out! So I've seen so much technology growth that young people must feel like it was always like this! Funny! I can't wait to see what the future brings. I really glad I was one of the fer older people to keep up with Tech. Lots o people my age are now sorry they didn't because thn they just assumed this stuff was just novel! Now many need help just turning one on! Very amusing ! Thanks for the help!
