HT4718 Problem to re-download Lion for clean install as it was pre-installed.

After problems on my system and 2 visits to the apple store, the genius recommend to re-install clean Lion.
As I use the recovery HD, and ask to re-install Lion from the internet, it asked me my apple ID but then stop the process and says that apple ID did not purchase Lion. I did not purchase it from the App store as it was pre-installed on my Imac bought in July 2011. So obviously I cannot re-download it from the App store.
How do I get to re-install a clean Lion then?

You have fallen victom to this new system as your Mac originally came with Snow Leopard and was upgraded to Lion somehow, before you purchased it. Which means that the Lion download system sees your system as one that did NOT come with Lion Preinstalled which means you must of bought Lion from the MAS.
About the only options you have is to take it back to the Apple store you originally went to and ask them to reinstall Lion. Also explain what happens and get a copy of Lion from them on USB stick along with a set of original system discs.
Call Apple and explain the problem and ask them to send out both the Original Install discs, which will be for Snow Leopard, and a copy of Lion on USB thumb drive. You NEED the original install disc for that unit as otherwise you will not be able to install the iLife apps from the MAS without buying them as only units that actually came with Lion Pre-Installed are allowed to download the iLife Apps free from the MAS.
You are between a Rock and a Hard Place.

If I buy Lion Server for my iMac can I download Lion for free on my MacAir?

Well, it hasn't worked that way for me.
I bought Lion for $29 from the App Store this morning, and DLed/installed it on my MacBook Pro with no problem.  This afternoon I went to upgrade my Snow Leopard Server Mac Mini.  Went to the App Store, clicked the Lion Server at $49.99, and was prompted that "because this is an OS X server, you must purchase a OS X Lion as well as OS X Lion Server, for $79.98"  [Cancel]  [Purchase Both]
If I try to install just Lion from my "Purchased" list in App Store, I get exactly the same message.  If I try to install Lion from an install DVD, I get a "checking with App Store" and then the same message.
Spent over an hour on the phone with Enterprise Sales, who agreed that's not what was supposed to happen, but had no resolution.  It isn't critical to me timewise so they are mulling the situation over.
My recommendation if you have SLS and clients to upgrade is to do the Lion/Lion Server purchase *first* for the server.  Hopefully then the Lion license will be available for your other machines.  I can't guarantee it, but I can guarantee that the other way *doesn't* work.

  • Hey, I wanna download Lion for free, so i need UP-TO-DATE , but it do not works , please help

Hey, I wanna download Lion for free, so i need UP-TO-DATE , but it do not works , please help

I think you misunderstood the guy. The up-to-date program isn't working for a lot of people. I'm eligible for the free upgrade but it fails to recognise my serial. From what I've read, this is affecting a lot of people who purchased their computers online. Apple seems to be fixing the issue though, so my advice would be to keep trying. Alternatively, click on the manual verificaton link so they can check your order for you and send the redemption code after they do.

  • Downloaded Lion for my laptop.  Do I have to pay another $29 to download it on my mac?

I downloaded Lion for my laptop and was wondering if I have to pay again to download Lion on my desktop?

    Hi,
You can re download Lion on all your authorized Macs using the same Apple ID for free.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.

You must have purchased a new Mac on or after June 6th. You then have 30 days from the release of Lion in which to make your claim. See

"The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. • Purchased mac mini server with lion, can i download lion for my macbookpro ?

    Hi,
I bought a mac mini server with lion server. I have macbookpro with Snowleopard. Do i need to purchase Lion again to install in macbookpro ?
I registered my mac mini with my apple id .. still when i check app store in my macbook it is asking me to purchase again.
    Can someone clarify ?
    - thanks LP.

Yes. What came on your Mini cannot be installed on your other computers. You will have to purchase and download Lion for the MBP. If you wish to install Lion server on the MBP, then you will have to purchase and download Lion Server, too.

  • Where to download OS X mavericks (trying jan/2015) for clean install

    hello,
i heard mavericks is not available for downloading anymore, any other web (safe) or way i can get Mavericks to download? specially for a clean install usb - emergency reason, since i am going to attempt to install yosemite on my late 2013 mac retina, (which has mavericks already)
If i didn't prev download it with an apple ID
    I appreciate any help

    To answer your questions:
    1. That is correct
    2. TimeMachine backs up all files to another disk (it can backup to the local disk also but if the disk fails you've lost your TM backups as well as the original stuff so not much good to do TM backups locally). Everyone has a different opinion of how large of a Time Machine disk you need - read this and decide for yourself
        http://pondini.org/TM/1.html
Pondini is an expert when it comes to all things related Time Machine.
    3. Read my other post (from 2:00pm) - it explains that if you do the Command+Option+R right after you power up the system (and before it's booted up) you can do the Mavericks install if that is what your system came with. You need an internet connection for this to work as it downloads the version of OS X that came with the system when it was purchased. Are you the original owner? Do you remember if it came with Mavericks or ??? You will still need to have your App Store user login and password to complete the download of the real OS X. See these two articles for a good explanation of the Internet Recovery as well as the regular Recovery methods (it talks about "Lion" but think it's the same for all OS X versions with the newer recovery type installs):
    http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/20/what-is-os-x-lion-internet-recovery-and-how-does-i t-work/
    http://osxdaily.com/2014/12/14/reinstall-os-x-mac-internet-recovery/
    4. Yes, you need an external disk to use Time Machine effectively. You can install Mavericks - IF the system was purchased with Mavericks (I've no idea how Apple knows or keeps track of this, but they do. You can try the Command+Option+R during power-on and you will see the "Starting Internet Recovery" message with a sort of revolving globe icon and a status bar showing how much time remains to download the installer. I just tried it on my old MacBook from 2010 and it looks like the Recovery Boot mode - only the download image came off the Internet/Ethernet connection instead of off the disk - much slower than booting off disk, but if you have a good internet connection speed shouldn't take too long (it's probably the same 650MB image stored on the Maverics Recovery partition (or something very similar).
All recent Apple computers can do Internet Recovery - plus a few older ones that have updated firmware. Here is a link explaining which older Apple systems can do the Internet Recovery if their firmware is updated (your Retina system is fairly new so it works with Internet Recovery without needing any firmware update):
Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support
Good luck - ask more questions if you wish...it's important to understand how all this fits together so you don't end up with more problems than you started out with.

  • Just bought a Mac Pro and they told me I would be able to download Lion for free.  HOw can I do that?

I was told that a letter would be sent to me from Apple letting me know as soon as Lion was available for free download.  Haven't received my letter and can not download Lion without having to pay for it.  Any suggestions as to what's going on and when I might expect my letter?

Upgrading to OS X 10.7 FAQ
First, you need to make sure you're running the latest version of SnowLeopard 10.6.8
Click the "Apple" symbol in the top left corner of your screen and select "About This Mac."
Make sure you're running version 10.6.8.
If not, click "Software Update" from the same Apple menu and update your system.
Then when that's finished launch the MacAppStore from the same menu.
You'll see the giant Lion banner across the top. Click on it.
This brings you to the app page for Lion. It costs $29.99 -- click the price, then click "Buy App."

These are user to user support forums and Apple doesn't respond here,
We users can't speak for Apple about your free Lion status or problems downloading, reissuing a download.
It's possible Apple could be spacing out the downloads as not to knock the servers offline. So be patient.
If after a week or so when the initial rush is over, and you still haven't gotten your Lion, I suggest you contact Apple.
    Mission critical
If your using Mac's in a mission critical type environment or have third party hardware you must rely upon working correctly. It's advised to wait until all the bugs, driver updates, third party software and other issues are resolved before upgrading. This might take several months. Then if you do so, do one machine at a time and carefully test everything before full deployment.

  • Simple protocol for clean install of lion

I have an older macbook (2007) that has started to do some funny things … including a fairly well documented problem that, to my knowledge, has no real solution short of a clean install. Even the local mac store recommended that I reinstall Lion if the problem persists. Well, the problem has persisted and I have a few other odd and annoying things that happen intermittently.
My computer is backed up with both Time Machine and cloned with CCC on separate external HDs. I also made a bootable install disc of Lion on an 8GB flash drive when I originally purchased and downloaded it. However, I am unsure about what the best clean install protocol should be. I want to (1) preserve my files and (2) minimize the amount of time/effort required to get my computer back up and running like it should. So, I was hoping someone could help me out by listing a simple recommended protocol for this situation as well as the important files/folders that I should preserve from my backups after wiping the drive clean and reinstalling Lion in order to essentially have my computer running like it was, minus the corruptions in the OS.

First off, thanks to all for the quick responses. I really appreciate the input.
Ok, here's what it looks like I can do:
    1. erase and install, either by booting into my recovery partition or from the Lion install disc I previously made on an 8GB usb drive. Then ...
    2. restore data from my backup.
So, Time Machine will not overwrite the new system files when it restores my 'user' data, and the restored data should include all of my settings and preferences? Bookmarks for my browser? Keychain passwords? I only ask because I'd like to be prepared before diving in. I think I'm ready to give it a shot.
@Linc: I really appreciate your point of view. I purposely did not discuss the major problem I'm having because I didn't want to distract from the simple question I had with a complex problem. Since you asked, here goes: when I wake my mac from sleep, sometimes I lose my wireless network connection and sometimes I don't. If my connection is dropped, sometimes I can reconnect by manually selecting my network and other times when I manually select it, I cannot reconnect even if I enter the correct password. If this happens, I am forced to sleep the computer and wake it, which starts the whole process over again. If it does not reconnect to the network this time, I am forced to restart the computer if I want the network connection. Not good. Gets old quick. I have had this problem since Snow Leopard - hoped installing Lion would fix it. I have searched and read many discussion here and elsewhere regarding this problem and tried many solutions that have worked for some people and not others. None have worked for me. The only constant seems to be a clean install, which sees to work for most. I spent hours at the Apple Store. They even gave me a brand new Airport Extreme for free because they couldn't isolate and fix the problem, in hopes that might do the trick. Nope. In my opinion, I have spent way more hours than it is worth to fix this problem trying to avoid a clean install. Certainly, I don't know if it will work until I do it, but I'm at the point where I feel like it is worth a try. So, if you have the solution I've been waiting for, please send it along … I'm the kind of person who would much rather figure out and fix a specific problem (with some help) than throw in the towel.

  • I downloaded Lion for my Mac and now Firefox freezes whenever I try to open the NYTimes crossword site.

I've been using Across Lite for years to do the NYTimes crossword puzzles. I just downloaded Lion to upgrade my Mac OS. I've downloaded the new version of Across Lite to fit with Lion, no problem. But when I go to the NYTimes crossword page, Firefox freezes. Sometimes it won't even open the page, sometimes it opens the page but then freezes. I haven't had this problem with any other site.

I just spoke to a Rep.  Told me because of the age of my IMac that Lion is the only OS i can download.  But i can't find Lion in the Mac Staoe.  Where do I go?

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
