HT4724 Sony HVR-Z7U memory recording unit transfer to Mac FCP X ?

I am unable to transfer from my Sony Memory Recording Unit to my Mac FCP X. Any ideas?

According to a couple of other posts here, you have to either go through Final Cut Pro 7, Clipwrap, or Mpeg Streamclip. I avoid Mpeg Streamclip because of the fact that it cannot distinguish the audio. If for example, I record separate audio with my Sony Z7 cameras, like when I split channels with one on the boom mic and the other on the radio mic, Mpeg Streamclip tends to combine these channels to stereo which is useless. The final cut pro 7 plugin is the only one I know of that separates the audio channels. I am not sure whether this is possible with the latest version of Clipwrap. I did use Clipwrap in the past, however I don't use it now because of the Sony plugin. I also have one for XDCAM, so I can ingest footage from an EX 1 or EX 3. As for DSLR footage, I haven't tried, but I tend to use 5D to RGB batch (download from Apple Store) to convert any DSLR footage to Apple ProRes in various degrees of quality. Apparently Sony are working on a plugin, but they are taking their sweet time on this as Final Cut Pro X has already been out for a year. This is something that Apple is not responsible to provide a solution for.

  • Trouble importing HDV mini DV footage from my Sony HVR Z7U into FCP 6.0.6

Cannot import HDV mini DV footage from my HVR Z7U camcorder into Final Cut Pro
I can Import the footage as an NTSC 720x480 signal.
One consistent answer is to make sure that in camcorders menu settings that the IN/OUT REC - iLINK SET is set to off.
No Luck, no communication with FCP in that mode.
That being said when cameras ilink is on I can import 740/480 NTSC video, not HDV.
    Here’s where I’m at now
The video was shot in 1080i 30p onmini DV.  With my Sony HVR Z7U Ican only import the video into FCP as a NTSC 720x480 signal. It looks great butnot in HDV?
I believe I have tried most every setting in my FCP audio video settings to import the HD footage into FCP. FCPseems to only recognize the camcorder in the NTSC mode.
Example - In  FCP  Audio /Video Settings
    Sequence Preset - HDV 108030p
    Capture Preset    - HDV
Device Control     - HDV FireWire Basic
Video Playback   - Only gives none or NTSC choices(I chose Apple FireWire)
With the setting above and Sony’s  ilink off- window alert reads…
“Device is not connected or the capture preset is not set up correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.” The camcorder viewer reads the digital footage as 1080i 30p. So it’s not shot in DV footage.
With the iLink on - I get the same window alert.  Unless I capture in NTSC
For me FCP will only log and capture the footage when the Capture and Device Control Presets are set to a NTSC format and the camcorder ilink is on. Hence an NTSC 720x480 signal is imported. Not HDV?
Come on, I know this a common problem and I must be missing something very simple. Please Help! Many thanks.

Someone mentioned using log and transfer. I use this with all my Compact Flash HD videos. I have found no info for importing HDV from mini DV in log and transfer with a (my) camcorder.

Gary, this is the Final Cut Pro X forum.  You might try the other forum for FCP. Still, I have the Z5U Sony which is nearly identical to your camera except for the zoom as I recall.  I think we have the same menu system.  I see to recall there is a menu option that sets the output file format.  Also you can set it to record in SD as well as I recall.  I read my files in from tape to FCP X easily ... in high def.  Best wishes.

  • FCP 6.0.6 will not recognize my new Sony HVR-Z7U camcorder

I cannot capture any mini DV fotage from this camcorder (Sony HVR-Z7U) into FCP.
Im using I link 1394 6pin from the camera to the computer.
Wrong wiring? or settings in camcorder?

    Thanks Nick and all,
Most of my videos are shot in HD 30p. That being said, Nicks Easy Set up instructions got my camera to work with FCP. Go figure. I guess now I'll just need to pay attention to my sequence settings.
I thought since I shot in HD, setting the camcorder in DV NTSC mode would not run the camcorder in HD for FCP. That was my original thought, so I keeep trying all the HD capture presets. It's working, hope it is capturing in HD.

  • Sony Memory Recording unit plugin shortens clips

    Hi all
For months I've been tearing my hair out during editing when countess clips shot on our Sony Z5's all stopped short of where they should have. I blamed the camera operators, including myself, but after I found a dozen 5 second panning clips in a row all stopped short before the pan ended, I knew it wasn't camera operator error and turned my attention to Log and Transfer.
Within FCP 7.0 we capture HDV footage from flash cards using Log and Transfer with the Sony memory unit plugin for FCP installed. A look at the backup files (a simple direct copy from the flash card) shows the clips run their full length as filmed. Something is obviously happening during the FCP import.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Can't say I've noticed this on our EX1, but then again that uses a different plugin for log and transfer.

My No.1 editor's complaint "too much footage". Also, with our move to EX1 cameras on the high
end weddings, AU$800 32Gb SxS cards are too valuable to fill with overshooting. So now we try to
shoot more economically, but it appears I have to tell the team to ignore that and just let it roll
like a madman when you use a Z5.
When I was a kid shooting 16mm for news, I shot like a madman, insisting the B-roll was precious and film was cheap. My boss informed me, "in this business, shooters are cheap and film costs real money." So I learned to shoot a 2-minute story on four minutes of film by carefully preplanning the story with the reporter and editing in my head in the camera. Reduce the number of choices and you reduce the editing time, simple math. The real problems with any type of field production arise when the producer cannot function as a decision-making machine and assumes spraying everything from multiple points of view will yield a tight edit.

Hey guys - n00b question.  Can you record video on a Sony HVR-HD1000 with the Duo memory card or do you have to use a mini-dv cassette? Thanks!

  • Media from memory recorder goes offline after downloaded to FCP

Hi guys, I just bought a Sony HVR Z5U with the Memory Recording unit. My problem is once I get the media into FCP and turn of the recording unit, the media goes off line, even after saving the project. Is there a setting I don't know about here to save the media within my hard drives so I don't have to keep all footage on the compact flash card?

Apology accepted. I've always Logged and Captured footage from tapes, did the editing, saved the project to a external and it has always been there when I went back to work on it. I didn't know you had to save media from a recorder unit to the external first, because I have never dealt with it before. Thanks for the help.

  • Windows 7 not showing Sony HVR-MRC1K device in Windows Explorer

    Hi,
The Sony HVR-MRC1K is a memory recording device that attaches to Sony video cameras and records onto CompactFlash cards.  When connecting this device (via Firewire) to my computer, the device can be seen under "Devices and Printers", but I cannot see the device on Windows Explorer or My Computer, hence I cannot pull video files off the card onto my computer.
The device works fine under Windows XP, and Windows Vista x64, but not Windows 7 RC x64.
If I am doing something wrong or there is another way to view the files on this device, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Allen.

    Hi guys,
Just wanted to mention, this is not the same issue as the video capture problem that Windows 7 seems to have with some Camcorders.  The second poster on this thread (Nano Warp) thought it might be related and posted a link to another thread.
The MRC-1K is a memory recording unit that records onto CompactFlash cards.  When connected to a computer via 1394 (FireWire), it acts as a hard disk drive device - Windows should allocate it a drive path/letter and should be able to access data on the card.  It works under previous versions of Windows but Windows 7 recognizes the device as an AV/C tape recorder/player and does not allocate it a drive path/letter.
I thought maybe I could manually change the driver to whatever Vista 64 uses for this device but I'm not sure which driver it uses.  If anyone has any idea, please let us know.
Anyone else having a similar issue with a HDD type device being recognized as something different by Win 7?
    Thanks.

  • Output to tape on Sony HVR-M10U

I'm new to FCP and editing but was doing OK in SD. Now my client has started recording HD on a Sony HVR-Z1U camera and has bought a Sony HVR-M1OU deck. I have a G5 quad and Final Cut Studio (FCP 5). I captured a scene using the HDV - 1080i60 easy set up. It looks like letterbox on the canvas and I edited it and now want to get it to tape. I only need to output it SD. I have tried many ways but so far have been unable to get it out to tape. I've spoke to the Apple Tech support three times and to Sony tech support and tried all kinds of things that they have suggested and nothing has worked.
If I try to use Edit to Tape I get "Capture preset is set to HDV. Edit to tape is unsupported with this configuration. Please use print to video." I tried this and it spent some time "conforming" video then it looked like it was recording (I could see the video on the monitor on the deck itself) but the tape came out blank.
I'm getting desperate. Please if anyone can help, I'd be very grateful.

    Hi, David,
Thanks for looking. I just haven't found the Apple tech support people very helpful. It says in their list of supported products that they DO support both the Sony camera and the Sony deck in question.
The first time I called Apple tech support when I was having problems capturing the footage, the guy I spoke with didn't even ask me anything - he just said it wouldn't be anything to do with the software and would be the deck.
Then I went into my local Apple store and spoke with somebody at the Genius bar who knew FCP. He wasn't really able to give me much information but did suggest I should export the edited scene as a Quicktime movie but didn't seem to be sure of what settings to use. I did try to do that using NTSC anamorphic (I think from memory that was it) but still was unable to print it to tape. Each time I try anything I get a dialog box saying conforming video and it takes five hours or more before I find out each attempt doesn't work. So as you can imagine it's very frustrating.
I spoke with somebody at Sony who was very helpful but didn't know FCP and he suggested I get Apple Tech Support on the telephone and they could do a conference call with Apple, Sony and me to try and sort out the problem. I then called Apple tech support again and the guy I spoke with there just said "we don't do conference calls". He said the only support they give for free is very basic set up support and told me about the Apple Pro option ($199 each time or $799 for a year) but suggested I try the forum first, which I have done.
However, the guy at Sony had suggested I call the next day and speak with somebody there who know FCP and who wasn't there that day. I did that and he has been very helpful and is still being very helpful in solving my problems; even though they don't make the software they are still trying to help with it.
This is what I feel should happen. I spent $5000 on a computer (my sixth Apple computer in my computer buying history), a lot for a single person as opposed to a company, and then more money to buy the software. I feel very strongly that the tech support should be free and that if the person I speak to doesn't know the answer, he should at least say "I don't know, but I will try to find out for you". I feel that the guys at Sony have gone way beyond the call of duty to try and help me.
I appreciate your interest. Thank you.
    Marla.

  • FCP 5 doesn't recognise my Sony GV-D1000 miniDV recorder!  HELP!!

I've read about the upgrade issues with decks/cameras not being recognised after upgrading to Tiger and FCP 5 but that QT "remedy" did not wrk for me. Anyone out there that has a Sony GV-D1000 miniDV recorder and could'nt get it to work since the upgrade? What did you do? What do I do? I have so much work to do and can't get the deck to communicate!
    I have:
    G5 dual
    Tiger
    FCP 5

    Welcome to the forum!
You'll get good advice here and it's worth a visit even if you don't have a problem - you'll learn a lot from reading the posts.
This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem with FCP (if that's what it is):
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
I know you say you've tried this next bit once - but it's easy to do it wrong - so check it out:
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite safe but you must Trash the Receipts AND re-install QT from the link provided.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
Let us know how you get on!

  • Using a Sony HVR-M25U for video playback

I know this isn't strictly a Final Cut question. I'm just hoping that some smart Final Cut editor is using the same Sony deck as I use and can help me out. Also, sorry for the length. I've included every detail I thought might be germane.
Since I started editing HDV I've always used Digital Cinema Desktop Preview for monitoring my edits. I suppose due to a lack of computing power it's never looked very good in motion, though it looks nice and clean when stilled. Today I bought an HDMI cable, hoping to allow me to monitor my work in FCP, sending the video via iLink (FireWire) through my Sony HVR-M25U to my HD monitor.
Now, I use my HVR-M25U Videocassette recorder deck to log and capture footage in Final Cut Pro. That works fine. I can view video straight off HDV tapes on my High Definition monitor via the HDMI input. That works fine. I can even use the Print to Video function and see the HDV output both in the LCD screen on the front of the deck and on the monitor through the HDMI input. The trouble I'm having is in using the M25U to monitor my editing via iLink.
In the old days, working with DV, I had a DSR 40 and I was able to use that deck to monitor my FCP output via iLink, taking a component out to my standard def monitor. Is there some reason I can't use this HDV deck the same way? I've tried refreshing A/V devices in Final Cut. I don't see any iLink or Firewire choices in my view menu. I do see a whole list of HDV (1440 x 1080) choices but they're all greyed out. These choices also exist in my Audio/Video Settings screen under "Playback Output" but, again, they are greyed out. Oddly, from having used the Cinema Desktop Preview, I have "Different Output for Edit to Tape/Print to Video" checked and under that pulldown the same eight HDV (1440 x 1080) choices do exist and they are not greyed out. Checked or unchecked, that doesn't change the Playback Output menu.
I can't see any logical deck settings to adjust. Under "IN/OUT" settings I have "HDV/DV SEL" on Auto, my "Video Out" as 1080i/480i and "i.LINK SET" (the DV down-convert) is off.
I've also tried shutting down FCP and relaunching and shutting the deck off and firing it back up. I've tried the deck first and then FCP and I've tried the opposite. I also tried restarting. Still nothing.
If I can feed HDV from the deck into my computer via iLink, shouldn't I be able to feed HDV from my computer to the deck? Like I said, I can record HDV via Firewire to the deck. Shouldn't I be able to see that same HDV output on the deck's LCD screen and also through the deck's HDMI output when editing?
In case it matters, I'm running FCP 6.06, OS X 10.6.2 on a 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core Xeon with 4GB RAM.
Thanks in advance for anyone who's taken the time to actually read this long question and a special thanks to anyone who might be able to help.

    #25 HDV external Monitor Viewing
Shane's Stock Answer #25 - HDV external Monitor Viewing
To view HDV on an external monitor in high definition you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Decklink (www.decklink.com) or AJA (www.aja.com) offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. HOWEVER, both cards are capable of down converting the signal so that it can be displayed on an SD monitor. This won't be color accurate
The real reason why you can't monitor HDV through a Firewire camera is because Firewire HDV cameras don't decode incoming HDV streams and route them to their outputs like DV cameras do.
Good options for you are the Matrox MXO2...$500...coupled with an HDTV. Or a Matrox MXO (DVI connection) coupled with an Apple 23" display gets you good quality.
And there are the Decklink Intensity and Intensity PRO cards as well, and the AJA I/O Express...
You can, however, view HDV out via firewire as DV...lowering the resolution to that of DV, but still viewable. This is not full quality nor should it be used to judge the quality of your footage or used to color correct to. This is just a way to view the footage on a large monitor.
Here are some examples of some of the possibilities:
    - DV or HDV sequence output to an SDI signal on a third-party interface
    - An uncompressed NTSC or PAL sequence output to a DV FireWire output
    - An HDV sequence output to a DV FireWire output
Sequence and output formats must have compatible frame rates. For example,
sequences with a frame rate of 60, 30, or 24 fps can be output to a 30 fps device,
but not to a 25 or 50 fps device.

  • Importing Video From a Sony HVR-Z5E into Adobe Premiere CS5

    Hi,
I am importing video from the Sony HVR-Z5E straight into Premiere using the capture option off the file menu but the colour looks completely different to what it looks like on the camera. Why should this be? When I preview the video in the capture window the video looks fine. its just after I have captured it.
    OS: Windows 7 x64
    RAM: 3 GB
    Please HELP??!!??
    Many Thanks

Either your camera or your monitor is not properly calibrated. Lucky for you, capturing is just a transfer of digital data without any modification at all, just like copying files from A to B. They do not change in the copy process. So either it is in the eye of the beholder or you monitor is not properly calibrated or you are just imagining things.
Wish you luck with editing HDV on such a system.

Is there a pattern to the time of day or other detail that may be
traced back to a OS X system cause of this odd phenomenon?
Are there any copies of system files on any of the attached USB
external drives? Any libraries, such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc?
Once the drives are indexed by Spotlight, are their permissions
ignored by the OS X? Content, if neutral, should not affect the
wake or sleep cycle; especially if they're ignored by the OS X.
Could there be a bad cable or other component? If so that would
be a difficult process of elimination to detect it. Usually replacing
most suspect components in the USB stream (external to Macs)
is a rote way to mechanically test that idea; & not 100% sure.
Does the equipment all have a good ground to the utility or house
electrical field? An intermittent ground may affect more than sleep.
Hard to say at this point. Maybe a late-night talk radio guru on
remote viewing could peer into your situation and sleuth it out?
Sorry to have run out of ideas, but the process must be electrical
& mechanical to some extent. - Or perhaps odd software inspired.
Do you have any phone-home spyware items inside, just jumping
at the chance to spill your information? Little Snitch may help.

  • FCP workflow for Sony HVR A1E

Any recommendations for a suitable workflow when capturing HD footage from a Sony HVR A1E camera onto FCP 6.0 and exporting sequence as a quicktime file. It films 1080i and is PAL.
I've had major problems with image quality, ghosting, blurred motion etc with my exported quicktime files. i can see the interlacing clearly!
    My easy setup choices were:
Format: HD, Rate: 25fps, Use: HDV 1080i50 Firewire basic.
My sequence settings are the same.
For exporting i've been simply doing 'export as quicktime file', and i've left it as current settings.
why am i getting all these probs. Ideally someone using a similar video cam can answer this.
    many thanks.

    Dear Nick
I've got the same camera and have not had any such problems.
The HVR A1e can either record audio from the external rifle mic to ch1 or to both ch1 and ch2. You need to check this setting. I think the default is to record to both channels. Let me know if this is the problem.
