HT4759 Signing in to icloud

I have been trying to sign in to icloud, for the first time, for over 30 mins, the wheel is turning but nothing is happening. I tried re-starting my computer but it makes no difference, can anyone help?

Yes, you got it.
That means you are logged in...click on those icons to interact directly with those functions or see what is in there. And the Find My Phone - if you have iOS devices you want to setup for tracking, make sure they are registered in Find My Phone. That applies to iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers.
On the iOS devices, go to Settings > iCloud > Find My switched to ON.

For whatever reasons, the "None" option is not always available to all users and I think it may be related to what country you live in. Short of contacting Apple to get it straightened out, if you haven't done anything with your new ID ye - you can create an Apple ID without a credit card and simply abandon the one that you just created.

The two big things that you have to remember for this to work are ... you have to sign out of your existing Apple ID .... Settings>Store>Apple ID - tap the ID and sign out. Then you have to try to download a free app to bring up the window that asks you to sign in or create an ID. Read the information on the website that I referenced above.
If you have not used the original Apple ID for anything yet, you can simply ignore it and use the new one - or like I said earlier - contact iTunes support and ask them to help you sort it out.

I get this message whenever I try to sign in on iCloud on a Windows 7 PC.
"You can't sign in because of a server error"

The only thing I've done was changed my password of my Apple ID. But this is ok, i can access my iTunes and purchase apps.

I was having same issue here (using windows 7 64-bit). iCloud control panel used to work fine for me before this last update, but then it stopped letting me sign in. After entering apple id and password, just hangs with the spinning progress wheel forever..
I tried uninstalling, rebooting, and then reinstalling the control panel, but still did the same thing. I also tried changing my iCloud password; new password worked fine for signing onto icloud.com and from my iPhone 4S but still not from the control panel. The strange part was let it would let me log into it with my wife's apple id ??
That got me experimenting some more and I realized that the control panel worked fine from a different user profile on my windows computer! After experimenting and nosing around in my profiles 'AppData' folder, I managed to get it to work again:
If you have iCloud control panel log in window open, close it
Copy this path to your clipboard: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences
Goto start -> run
Paste the path and hit enter
From the folder that is opened, rename 'MobileMeAccounts.plist' out of the way (or you can delete it if want..)
Restart iCloud control panel and try logging on again. MobileMeAccounts.plist is regenerated the next time you sign out from control panel.
I'm guessing that somehow my (our) original MobileMeAccounts.plist has some sort of corruption in it, or maybe some log in attempt got hosed somehow and its preventing it from even trying? Who knows...

If they were in your camera roll and on your phone when you last backed up, they would be included in your iCloud backup. If you restored the entire backup you should recover them.

Are you running any Anti-virus software or do you have your firewall turned on? If so, disable them and try again. If that doesn't work, delete the iCloud account and then sign it back on again.
Make sure you are running the most current version of the iCloud Control Panel:

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Go to the 'Go' menu in the Finder and hold down the option key to reveal the Library. Then navigate to library > preferences > system configuration and drag the 'Networkinterfaces.plist' file to the trash and restart for mac. Now try again.

You are getting this message because you are trying to create an iCloud account on a PC by signing with your Apple ID. You can only sign into an existing account on a PC. You first have to create iCloud account on an iOS device (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) running iOS 5 or higher, or on a Mac running OS X Lion (10.7.5) or higher. Everywhere I search on Apple's Support site says to sign in to iCloud using your "Apple ID," which I did. I've had my iTunes account for years (even migrated from the old AOL account system). It's the standard email+password that everyone is supposed to use.
My main question is how can I have a valid Apple ID and not an iCloud account--if the two are supposed to be linked?

I've tried both. First, I tried on my pc, where iTunes had installed iCloud when it last updated. I have iTunes installed on this computer (and on my iPad and iPhone), but that wasn't the issue.
So I went online, thinking I needed a separate iCloud Apple ID, but it prompted me for my current Apple ID and gave me the message about my ID being "valid" but not an iCloud account," which, lol, was what it had asked me to do in order to create one. I already quoted the minimum requirements, look in the post before yours.
You will have to upgrade your Mac to at least 10.7.5, upgrades are not free, you buy them from the App Store. Mountain Lion is the best but your Mac must be compatible.
Here is a list of compatible machines.
Also note that some older apps (Office 2004, Appleworks) will not run on Mountain Lion.

Welcome to the Apple community.
If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact Apple ID Support, upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.
