Test after taking each of the following steps. Back up all data before making any changes.
1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions.
2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly."
3. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
4. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
5. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
6. In some cases, the problem has been resolved by repairing permissions on the startup volume.
7. Reinstall OS X.

I have itunes set up to sync with my Ipod Touch and my Ipad. As of today, it keeps looking for an iPhone to sync with and give me an error message. I don't have an iPhone and don't know how to stop it from popping open with this error message.

As of today, iTunes has started searching to sync with an iPhone, which I don't have and pops open with an error message stating it cannot locate the iPhone to sync. I have looked in devices and only the iPad and iPod Touch are listed. Any ideas on how to stop iTunes from searching for any iPhone it is never going to find? You should really read the manual.

Restore. When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them. What program did you use to import them? Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all. You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

Restore from Time Machine hung on "Looking for source"

Had to buy a new Macbook Air to replace my old one which was water damaged.
I have a full Time Machine backup on a portable USB hard drive which is divided into two partitions: Time Machine backup and a storage partition.
Old Macbook air has the previous operating system, updated.
New MA has mavericks of course.
Setup assistant didn't see the Time Machine backup when attached.
So I setup an account on the new computer, got to the main screen, started migration assistant to see if that would work.
(With the new account, the portable USB drive is recognized and both partitions show in the finder.)
Same problem. Migration assistant sits with spinning icon at "Looking for source".
What can I do to show it where the Time Machine backup is?

Does that mean you selected it on the Time Machine Preferences window? If not, do that.
If that doesn't help, the preferences file may be damaged. Try a "full reset" per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If still no help, the backups themselves may be damaged. Try to repair them, per #A5 in the same link.

Here's an easy way:
Pick the user that you want to eliminate (making sure that the remaining user has administrator privileges) and move all of the data that you want to keep into the Shared folder. Reboot or log out and login to the user you want to keep. Copy all the data from the Shared folder into your account - placing it neatly in folders (Documents, Music, Movies, etc.).
Once the data is moved, log into the account you want to delete just once more to make certain that you've grabbed all the data you want to keep. Log out and log back into your admin account and go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and delete the 'old' user.
That should do it.

I'm dealing with this same issue. At one point, it did recognize the Update function but then said it could not import the cache.mov and plist files which apparently means that imovie 10 can't see any of these past events. I can't figure it out.

I'm not sure if you are referring to how long it's taking or why it varies.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
If your internet speed varies, the time will be recaculated from time to time.

What country are you in ? Depending upon what country that you are in then you might be able to redownload them on your Mac's iTunes via the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the iTunes store homepage
If you're not in a country where TV programmes can be redownloaded then connect the iPad to your Mac's iTunes and use the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over from your iPad

My new mac is stuck on "looking for source" in Migration Assistant.

My new MacBook Pro arrived today and I am so excited to finally have a new Laptop. I made it through the startup process okay, until i made it to the screen that says "Transfer information to this Mac." My previous laptop was a windows 7 HP brand laptop, so on the previous screen I had selected Transfer "From a windows PC". Then the screen read "looking for source" and it had said it for quite a while before I clicked the back button a couple of times to quit out. Also, I am a college student living on campus so I referred back to the packet that IT gave all the students at the beginning of the year to set up the wifi on my new Mac. I had problems setting up the wifi so I visited IT and they set it up for me. Then after I came back from IT I tried the Migration Assistant again. And unfortunately it is not working and my Mac is still on that same screen
