HT4796 How do I transfer music from a PC to a Mac using an external hard drive?

I just purchased a MacBook Pro and have all my music and pictures saved to an external harddrive but I can not figure out how to transfer my music over from the hard drive without issues.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
To transfer the music from the external drive to your Mac, it depends if you want to save your music in a folder or in iTunes.
To copy your music to your iTunes library, simply open iTunes and open a Finder window with your external drive open. Then, just drag your music to the iTunes window, so your music will be transferred to your computer.
The process is the same if you want to copy your music to another folder, but instead of opening iTunes, open a Finder window with the folder where you want to copy your music

I have an HP external hard drive that I have put all of my files from my PC on. I am trying to move them onto my Mac, but I have absolutely no idea what to do. As a warning, I am kind of computer illiterate.

    Have a read here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518

  • How do I transfer my data to my new macbook pro using an external hard drive?

I've already set up my new MacBook Pro is my issue. It asked me if I'd like to "Migrate" my stuff or use an external hard drive etc but at the time I didn't transfer my data from my old MacBook yet. I was going to manually do it later as I had to wait for my External hard drive to back my old Mac up. Now it's that time and I have no idea how to do it. I believe I've researched best of my ability.
I feel like I'm asking a pretty dumb question. If I were to just drag all my programs out like my Adobe Suite on to my new macbook pro would that work? I feel like that's just too easy and incorrect. Please and thank you.

The Adobe suite can be downloaded free, you dont have to copy it at all, under standard CS6 Adobe rules, if you own the suite, you get 2 computers "activated at any one time"  Make sure, if youre not using the older computer, you deactivate the software under the HELP menu in Adobe.
format the new drive in disk utility ......APPLICATIONS.....UTILITIES.....DISK UTILITIES.......select the external drive and format (if its new and empty!!!) under the ERASE button with Mac OSX extended journaled
copy all your important stuff from older computer , pics, files, documents, personal anything.
most of you apps, i ASSUME you bought in the (other than Adobe software, or Office suite, etc etc,..... obviously) in the MAC APP store, so you can reload them on the new computer without copying them , makes things very easy......just open APP STORE, and download what you already bought.
really the only important things , is copy all important work files, documents, pictures, personal ABC...XYZ......  obviously.
the migration is about emails, contacts, etc etc etc, also data, just because you passed it by at the time doesnt mean you still cant do it,    go to the SEARCH at menu at top and type in MIGRATION ASSISTANT  to do it again , since you passed it by at first .
the only thing you NEED / SHOULD copy is all your personal stuff........Applications need to be reinstall from either ONLINE download,.......or from the MAC APP STORE,........  you cant just copy the apps over (in most cases) and toss them onto the new computer
Nahh, there are no dumb questions, just dumb mistakes because you DIDNT ask any questions, and we all make those here and there.

  • I recently purchased a new Windows 7 computer.  I copied my music from my old Windows XP computer using an external hard drive.  I can see all the music, album artwork, etc. when I activate iTunes.  However, no songs (purchased or uploaded) will play.

I authorized the computer on my iTunes account (it's now one of three).  Everything looks OK, so why won't the music play?

Try using Migration Assistant following this guide:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413#3
There is advice in this document for using Migration Assistant from Time Machine or other hard drive.

  • How do I retrieve data from a 500 GB Time Machine used as external hard drive?

I have a very particular situation. For several years I used a 500GB Time Machine as a wi-fi broadcaster, a back up, and also as external storage for iTunes - I 'partitioned' it to allow for it's use as an external drive.
Fast forward, and I've replaced the Time Machine with a new 3 TB Time Machine, as well as purchased a separate external drive (3 TB Western Digital) to store my iTunes files (so I no longer need to partition). The new Time Machine is my wi-fu hub.
The problem: I need to retrieve the 300 gb of audio files that are on my old partitioned Time Machine, and move them to my new WD external drive. I've already set up the new Time Machine as my wi-fi broadcaster, and de-activated the old Time Machine.
(I had tried to move the files previous to setting up the new Time Machine, but I realized after de-activating it that I wasn't as thorough as I thought, so I need to go back and move them again.)
I've tried to re-connect to the old Time Machine using an ethernet cable, but when I do, it recognizes it as my wi-fi hub, and it screws up my network - it suddenly allows me access to the old Time Machine, but blocks access to the new WD external drive.
So in a nutshell - I need to be able to connect the old Time Machine to my laptop (a Macbook running OS X 10.7.5) and have my new network see it as just an external drive - so I can then move the 300 GB of audio files directly on to my new WD external drive.
Any thoughts on how I can do this?

Why not connect both drives to the computer, turn off the wi-fi, and then copy the files over. Or you can use Disk Utility/Restore to move the files. See the note - it will erase the WD drive.
You can then set things back to the way you want them. You should have more than one back up as hard drives do fail. In this case, you could use a clone and keep it on the WD drive.
Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner          (Often recommended as it has more features than some others)
    Clone – Data Backup
    Clone – Deja Vu
    Clone  - SuperDuper
    Clone - Synk
Clone Software – 6 Applications Tested

    Hi CarlosMBM,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
With Home Sharing, you can stream music from your computer to your iPhone. If you'd like to transfer the music to your iPhone, see the steps in this article to set up syncing using iTunes:

How do I transfer music from my pc to my mac book pro?

There are different ways of transferring the songs, but as you just want to transfer songs, the best way is to use an external drive to transfer them to the Mac.
If you haven't got an external drive, get one. Then, connect it to your PC and copy all your songs to it.
After that, connect it to the Mac. To access to the external drive, open a Finder window and choose the external drive in the sidebar, under "Devices". Finally, you just have to put the songs in the folder you want, for example, Music

  • How do i convert my music and pics over from windows to mac using a external hard drive.

New mac user.  How do i convert my files from windows to mac using external hard drive.  I am using a Seagate freeagent go flex.

leave as is and add NTFS driver to write to the drive / migrate maybe / reading NTFS drives isn't always perfect, some times external drive case has trouble mounting or staying mounted and suffers slow copy speed after awhile or with large files which is why I suggest Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X.

  • How can I transfer music from my iPhone to my computer using itunes without syncing?

Got a bit of a dilemma here... I had all my music backed up on my laptop and I usually transferred files using iTunes from there but it got a virus so I had wipe the whole thing out. I lost everything I had there but I had iTunes on my computer, I just didn't have all the files that were on my iPhone on that computer, only on my laptop. Now I want to add music onto my iPhone from my computer but I'll have to sync it, which means loosing half of my music. Is there anyway I can transfer music onto the device without loosing half of the data or is there any way I can transfer the music from iTunes to my computer so that when I sync it, all the music stays there? And if I need a third party transfer tool, which one is the most reliable to avoid viruses again?

    Hello ZabeM
Anything that was purchased can be transferred to your new iTunes library by following the steps in the article below. You can also look at your purchased history and download the tracks to your computer.

  • How can i transfer music from my iPad to my mac

So my ipad is full and I'm trying to make some space to download some movies. I'd like to download the music I have from my Ipad to my mac since most of my music is on my ipad vs my mac. Most of my music wad not purchased on itunes so i can not sync the ipad and download it. Any good suggestions on a software transfer for me to try?
    Thanks

The best method to accomplish what you want to do is to transfer the music from the original computer to the new Mac, or re-download purchases from the iTunes Store. These Apple KB articles will help you:

  • How do I transfer music from my iPhone to my mac air

I am trying to transfer my music on my phone to my mac air. All my files were deleted and I dont want to loose all my music on my phone when I plug my phone into my computer!! Please help me!!! Thank you!!

Generally speaking, music transfers from a computer to an iPhone, not the other way around.  Apple only provides a way to transfer music you purchased in the iTunes Store from the iPhone to a computer.  To do that, connect your iPhone to iTunes, and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases from iTunes' menu.
In general, the way to restore music that is no longer on your computer is from your computer's backup.

  • How do I remove information I put on my new Mac via an external hard drive?

I got a new Mac (Mountain Lion). I'd been backing up my older Mac with an external HD. I used this same HD to transfer my info to the new Mac. Now it looks like I have 2 different user accounts. While I was in the user account that has the information from the external HD I did a system restore but it didn't seem to do anything. How can I remove the information from the external HD that I put on my new Mac???

According to the SONOS site is should just play your music that is in iTunes. Do you have the SONOS system already? Does it see and play your iTunes music.
If so just insert a CD into your system and import the music into iTunes. That should do it.
Before you do this to all 500 CD's I'd so it to one or two and make sure SONOS plays the tracks and they sound OK.
Post back if you have any other questions.
    regards
