HT4796 How long should the migration process last?

I am trying to do a migration from my PC to my new Mac.  How long should this process take?  Mine has been running for at least six hours now and still has not completed.  Is this normal?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It depends on the amount of files you are transferring and the method you are using to transfer your files (Wi-Fi or Ethernet). Both methods are slow and migration would take hours if you need to transfer a lot of files.
I only recommend you to use Windows Migration Assistant if you need to transfer a small amount of files. If not, it is much better to copy your files to an external drive and transfer them to your Mac

How long does the migration process take? And can you speed it up?

That's rather like asking how long is a piece of string.
It depends on how much you've got to migrate. Make sure that you run software update on the old machine before you start the migration. Failure to do this is one of the biggest causes of problems people have with this process.

  • How long should the MBP battery last?

HI, I have had my MBP 17inch for a few months now and its seems that the battery is rubbish! I generally get about 2-2.5 hours out of it, even when just surfing the internet. I calibrate it regularly, dim the brightness, turn off aiport etc.
Its says on the webiste I should get 5.75 hours! How long does other people's last? I was wondering if it had anything to do that I have the Hi Res version 1920-by-1200. Would it use more power?
Thanks very much for any info.
    Ian

Use the iStat widget, not CoconutBattery. FYI, the "real" values should be checked in Utilites > System Profiler > Power.
Your "original capacity" is 6300 mAh. That's a nominal value, which is why yours is actually higher - new batteries range from 6200 - 6700 mAh, approximately. The 5500 mAh is the correct value for the 15" MBP - CoconutBattery can't tell the difference.
Be sure to properly calibrate your battery every couple of months.
RE your original post, 2.5-3.5 hours of battery life is normal, depending mostly on screen brightness.
    Hope this helps...

  • HT4796 How long does the migration assistant transfer usually take?

This transfer seems to be taking a really long time and no real change in status. How long does it usually take?

I originally tried to migrate from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac via wifi. 30 hours, and it never finished. Tried again, same result. 3 days later, and never finished the transfer,  I connected the two via ethernet. Less than 4 hours to transer files (had a lot of high quality pix), but now up and running with no problems ... although I now have two main users. Read somewhere that there's a way to fix that. Don't EVER go wifi for Migration. Especially if you have others in your household using wifi, or a lot of high MB files. Or even if you've put you phone on wifi.
Oh yeah: don't forget to set your drive auto shut down to "never." That info isn't provided. Crucial for both devices. If either computer sleeps (the drive, not the screen), migration stops and doesn't warn as to "why" your migration isn't progressing, and you have to start all over. Be sure to go back and adjust the computer shut dowm to "never." System Preferences," "Energy Saver."
I am Mac, through and through. Just wish they'd offer more "how to" upfront versus me searching online or making an appointment to see some Genius, or waiting on hold for Apple assistance, to solve problems which I believe many face.
3 days later, migration complete. Finally. Seriously, Ethernet is the only way to go when you move from one Mac to another.
Been there, done that. Wish that Apple would suggest Ethernet as the way to Migrate. Have as of yet to see a successful migration via wifi; and I have looked, Googled, searched the topic. Apple should suggest Ethernet as the best way to migrate. Period.

  • How long should the battery realistically last?

i bought a 13'' macbook pro about three weeks ago. the battery is supposed to last about 7 hours (depending on usage and the such) but i feel that it isnt lasting more than three, and thats with only web surfing. is there a solution to help it last longer? and i also tend to leave my laptop plugged in, sometimes for hours after its fully charged. is this a bad thing?

you can leave your macbook plugged in all the time if you wish.  it will not harm your battery since it will stop charging once it's fully charged.
once in a while however, do use your macbook under it's own power and plug it back in when it's down to 80% to keep the battery in optimal condition.
now, disable your automatic brightness.  turn off your bluetooth if you're not using it.  turn off yourr remote control receiver if you're not using a remote.
check your login items to see what's loading at startup and delete them if you don't need it.
see what's using up most of your cpu's resources in activity monitor - all processes.  highlight the ones using the highest % CPU and hit quit process.
see if the above tips give's you at least 5 hours of battery life.
if you feel that your battery isn't lasting long after you've done the above, you can always take it back to apple and have them check your battery or have it replaced since you're under warranty.
    good luck..

  • How long should the newer iMacs last?

When I bought this computer, I was expecting to get at least 3 years of use out of it, but I'm wondering if anyone has had any long term experience with the prior flat-pannel iMac's. Is it wrong to excpect 3-5 years out of these without any real problems? Just wondering what your experiences have been, Thanks

"And when they do break down more than they should Apple extends the waranties and service on them like they did with the iMac G5 first generation. So dont worry."
What do I need to do to get help? I've had so many problems with mine, all just after the 3-year extended warranty expired. Even in talking to supervisors, I'm hard-pressed to get anyone to listen. I finally got a replacement disc for the Apple Care which came with my warranty. I had never opened it before it expired, and it had been incompatible with my system since I'd bought it (but I didn't know, since I'd never used it). It took hours of calls and being on-hold to get a supervisor to approve even a replacement disc, which costs Apple little or nothing. The disc didn't work, neither did any of my System Restore discs, the discussions forum couldn't figure out what was ever wrong with my iMac, and now I sit here with all of our iPod music and family videos/photos on an external hard drive which our PC won't read and our iMac won't extract (see my post question about the blank disc). To get support, all I get is the standard line of, "that'll be $49 for each question, valid for five days of support for each question asked." If there's a customer service line where they really help, I'm really needing it! Who do I call to get it working again? I BEGGED my husband to buy me this computer, telling him that Macs were so much easier than PCs. I hadn't worked on a Mac system since early in 1998, and that was in a corporate environment where the IT department handled any problems so I never had to worry about it. My current computer-programming friends can't help at all, because all they know is PC. I really feel lost in a vacuum with my beloved Mac, which is sucking our bank account dry with all of the necessary upgrades and support which come free with a PC.

  • HT5262 How long should the icloud back up take?

How long should the iCloud back up take? I only have 4gb of storage but it has taken almost an hour already with approximately 2 hours remaining.

    Hi RMaskery14,
If you are concerned about the time your iCloud backup is taking, you may find the following article helpful:
My backup is taking a long time to finish.
Backing up and restoring takes time, especially if you have a lot of data or a slow connection. Depending on the size of your backup and the speed of your network, you may need more time than expected to complete the process. Using a reliable connection when backing up your device is highly recommended.

  • How long should the Mac Book pro hold its charge???

How long should the Mac Book pro hold a  battery charge??

For a single use or how long will the battery last until it needs to be replaced?  For single use, it depends on what you are doing when using you mac.  I find that when using mine I get about 6-6 1/2 hours just using it to browse the internet before I need to recharge it.  If it is one of the newer Macbook Pros that claim to have a 7 hour battery life, It can last up to 5 years.  See this article on notebook batteries to get the most out of your battery: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html.  Hope this helps

How long does the IPhone5c battery last for without hardly any usage with about 2/3 to 3/4 left?
Has the side affect of charging, where the battery's life gradually decreases overall with each charge, been fixed ?

    Eric,
They did say 12-14 hours, but as is always the case with such estimates, they invariably quote the 'best possible scenario' and almost never mirror 'real world' conditions.
If, from a fully charged position, you simply switch on your nano, and set it to continuously play through a long set of songs, with EQ off, backlight off, modest volume (50%) don't touch it during playback, then you might just get somewhere near this figure - and if you don't then it's either not been conditioned properly or it's faulty.
If you use it like me, daily for a couple of hours, with 2 secs backlight and switch songs regularly, using fairly high volumes then 6-8 hours is more likely. It'll even drain when it's not in use, even in sleep mode, albeit very slowly. They also tend to drain more quickly before they've been through their first few charge cycles (the conditioning period).
Personally I haven't got a problem with this though I can understand why some people have. It's not very impressive in this respect. Apple should be able to come up with something much better - maybe they should talk to Sony

  • HT3231 how long should a migration take? Mine says about 24 hours.

How long should a migration take? Mine says about 24 hours.

I would always recommend migrating from a Time Machine backup drive...it's the most reliable (and fastest) means of moving everything over...and it's the most convenient, since you don't need to have two computers up and running to accomplish the backup.
If you'd like to some good reading on migrating everything over, I highly recommend the following site:

    I hope this helps!
    Congratulations on your new iMac.

  • How long is the iPad battery last while watching video on YouTube with 3G?

How long is the iPad2 battery last while watching video on YouTube with 3G?

My iPad 2 battery can use only ~7 hours 15mins when surfing the web using cellular data network. Is it normal?
I would say that's normal. Cellular uses more power than wifi. Your screen brightness is also a factor. Lower the screen brightness & battery will last longer.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night.
