HT4796 Migration Assistant: do I want everything?

Do I let Migration Assistant move everything it shows (user accounts, applications, ect.)?

There are NO apps on a windows computer that will work on a Mac. There is NO reason to import any user accounts. Why you have one on your Mac already.
IMHO Migration Assistant is a POS and Should Not Be used. Just copy over your personal Files.

HT4796 Migration Assistant on my Windows XP PC!

New Macbook Pro, needing to migrate all my files from my old Windows XP PC laptop. Migration Assistant on my PC has finally loaded after copious updates, but won't run as the PC believes that Outlook Express is still running, when it's not!
Restarting doesn't work, Task Manager's processes show nothing for outlook express, but the migration assistant does show as running there. Apple support say the issue is related to Windows, so they can't help. I'm a bit miffed as Migration Assistant is an Apple product, but I suppose it is beyond their remit as the issue IS IN my PC (friggin' Bill Gates and Windows - I thought I was saying goodbye to them at last!). I have no external hard drive, and would be loathe to do this whole transfer manually anyway.
How do I get it to load up?

Disk storage issues frequently happen if the hard disc is over 85% full. Make sure your trash can is emptied after backing up any files you want to keep elsewhere.

I completed the Windows Migration Assistant process - to transfer files from my PC to my Mac. When prompted with options to transfer I selected all, since it was not clear. I cannot find any of the files or photos frmo my PC on my MAC. Any helpful hints?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /Users/ as the path, and drag the migrated home folder to the desktop. Alternatively, log into it, move items you want to transfer to /Users/Shared/, and from there to the other account's home folder.

HT4796 Migration assistant had stopped with 17 minutes to go

Migrations assistant from windows laptop to my new Mac book Pro , mountain lion, has stopped with 17 minutes still to go! Any help appreciated.

I suspect it's failing due to two things, you didn't use Setup Assistant to Migrate and the eithernet connection. When you use Setup Assistant (this only runs when OS is turned on for the first time) that seems to be more reliable than MA. MA will create a second user account where Setup Assistant will make your new machine look just like the old one. Next many people that try using an ethernet cable have the same problem, why I have no idea.
If you want to use SA you will need to reformat your HD and reinstall OS X and it will prompt you to migrate towards the end of the installation. If you just got the computer and don't have too much new stuff on it this may be something to think about.

You might want to consider manually transferring the files because some users have reported using Migration Assistant creates a new user account so the files aren't accessible by your current Mac user account. The link discusses how to do a manual transfer.

HT4796 migration assistant will not download to my XP pc, it says successful, then a window opens saying an error with only the option of QUIT

Using my iMac has been nothing but frustrating, out of the box and it works, yeah, plug in and power comes on...but then amatuerish tutorials, then try migrating data, phone support offered not help and a return call that somehow never made in the proposed 1 hour window.
All i want to do is migrate my data from pc to mac...but maybe i don't.

First on my pc,XP pro the Windows Migration Assistant says you have "successfully downloaded." Then I go to start>all programs>windows migration assistant. A single click and a Apple window appears with the two finder faces and displays the following message in total:
"An error occurred while preparing your information for transfer."
The Go Back option is grayed out, the only option I have is Quit.
This is all there is. Apple tech is preplexed after 2 hours. His solution is for me to purchase an auxiliray HD and call back.

You are wright the index file is 308 KB.
And offcourse that I delete my files and documents is not an Iweb problem, but because my English is not that good, that I thougt I try to tell the whole story, and hope people can read trough the lines.
Why I didn't use Iweb to upload to the server is because the server company recommanded to use file zilla. And I am a nobody with this kind of things, so I did exactly what they tell me to do.
No, i did not make a backup of Iweb and the domain file, but reading other messages on this forum showed me that I can maybe try to make empty the cashfile (?)
and otherwise I have bad luck and have to make my website again. Offcourse I have a lot of examples from all the pages (copied from the local map to my USB stick) and my website is aprox. 15 Mb, (not so big) so it will cost me a few nigths.
But I'm still hoping on a miracle :-)

I am using migration assistant to move files from a Windows PC to my new iMAC. Baby steps. So far I moved my IT music over and my pictures. I found some of the music in ITunes, but cannot find where the pictures went. Suggestions?

It may have created a new user account. if this wasn't through SetUp assistant.

Hello. It looks like I recovered all my keywords attached to photos. What I did:
First I located all photos without keywords using a metadata search.
I found that it seemed to be certain groups of photos that had no keywords. I decided to at least get the main keyword on all of those in a particular group, like Canyonlands.
Once I added one of the keywords, the others all showed up magically! I then went to each group of photos and added the main keyword, and the others came along and attached to the photos.
Don't understand why this occurred or why it got fixed, since it was so random. But, I'm glad to have my keywords restored (I had divided flowers by color, etc. so it was a lot of work!)

My PC accidentally got shut down during migration, do I have to restart from the beginning or will it continue transferring where it left off.

I recommend to delete all the files you don't need from your PC before using Migration Assistant. Those files will be transferred to your Mac and you will lose space.
Then, you can open Windows Migration Assistant and start transferring files. In case that your Mac asks you for a password to log in after transferring, it's the same password as you had on the PC. You didn't state how old you Win PC was, only that it was running Win 8. From talks with people I know that use Windows they would never upgrade a 4 year old PC to Win 8. Especially if it was already running Win 7.
So I, wrongly, Assumed you had a newer notebook that came with Win 8.
Right Content and Data (Like your PERSONAL files which is what I stated above) is the only thing that can be used on Mac from a Windows PC. No programs or settings can be carried over from a Windows PC to a Mac running OS X.

Migration Assistant did install without any error on my Vaio laptop running Windows 8 pro (Dutch version).
Howerver when started it says there's an (unspecified) error. What am I doing wrong? (Apple NOOB)

HT4796 Migration Assistant Installation Error

When installing the migration assistant on a Windows 7 machine, I get an error that a DLL is missing causing the install to fail. Any ideas?

Try networking the 2 computers and copy the files over.

My mac is stil "inspecting your computer" and migration assistant is still "searching my documents" after ONE HOUR!!! Is this normal?!

It would probably much more difficult figuring out why than booting into the recovery hd and resetting the password.
Once in the Recovery HD, open Terminal from the Utilities menu and type: resetpassword. That will open the account password reset utility.
