HT4809 Has anybody else been experiencing mass USB keyboard death?

In the last month alone, 9 USB wired aluminium type Apple keyboards under 18 months old have had one or more keys sticking or stop working from a user base of 40 users i.e. almost a 25% failure rate.
The majority of these keyboards are already replacements for previous keyboard deaths of the same model and many have only been in service for 2 or 3 months before they die but sitting shrink wrapped in storage (cool, dry place) for 6 months or more before that, so warranties are questionable at best.
These numbers exclude obvious keyboard deaths such as coffee spilliage. Generally users come in in the morning or back from lunch and suddenly their keyboard has stopped working either with keys being stuck or just parts of the keyboard dying e.g. no numbers or random keys such as "a" and "d" stop working. This can happen while a machine is running or on a fresh boot after a clean shutdown.
Standard troubleshooting - change usb port, reboot machine, check the user has not turned on anything funny via system preferences all turn up no results. The onscreen keyboard does not clock the dead keys as being pressed but replacing the keyboard fixes the problem every time.
Keyboard death is not OS specific as we are running OSX 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 and keyboard death shows no specific swing to a certain OS. Plugging a dead keyboard into a Mac running a different flavour of OSX still shows the same symptoms as on the machine where the problem began.
The usage is standard web browsing, email and document editing in an air conditioned office environment. We have a mixture of people ranging from those who still type with one finger to people who touch type at high speed but this does not seem to affect the life of the keyboard at all.
These keyboards are a mixture of US layout and Japanese layout keyboards.

Keyboards are a low power device.   Go to the system profiler to determine the power of the various port buses.   Plug the keyboard into the USB port that is not low power.
Either that, or replace the USB cable, or add a USB hub that has wall power from outside the computer.

  • Has anybody else been having trouble with there iPhone 4s randomly freezing and only unfreezing to shut down because the battery is dead?

I have been using my iPhone 4s a lot mainly for email and to text my friends. I have also noticed that my iphone seems to have recently begun freezing up. It's done this a number of times, and ive only noticed it happen after i updated the software to 5.1 version. Has anybody else been having this problem? I have takin good care of my iphone, and I care to know why my 300 dollar phone is currently being out done by any 20 dollar walgreens phone that I have had in the past.

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

  • Has anybody else been seeing (Not Responding) at the top of the screen and having thier browser not respond to wheel scrolling and scrolling with the usual slider at the right part of the screen?

I have noticed my Firefox browser is having way too many incidences where it is "Not Responding". The browser freezes up for a second quite often and the "Not Responding" message will appear at the top of the screen.
The browser will also not scroll with either the scroll bar on the right nor with the mouse wheel. Both used to work in previous versions of Firefox, but it seems to have gotten worse since Firefox 5 0r 6. The same with the "Not Responding". It is happening more with Firefox 7 than in at least the past two versions.
Anybody else having these issues? Seems like they are hand-in-hand. Thanks for any and all help or advice. It's making me pretty angry since I'm online all day for work.
Just an FYI. At the bottom of my troubleshooting copy/paste is a suggestion to update the driver for my graphics. That was a no-go. I tried that.

Thank you for this first reply! I'll have to give this a try later....the main laptop I experience this on crashed not more than an hour after I posted this issue. I'm on a tiny, slow netbook that hasn't had the same problem. Now I'm wondering if I picked up a Trojan on the main laptop and the "Not Responding" message is a side effect of a virus or Trojan.
One of the system .dll files has been corrupted and I'm not being allowed to use recovery discs, previous disc images, or any recovery options. That was an all day sucker yesterday and from what I've read on forums and have researched, it appears I'm going to need to reload the operating system. If it is indeed a Trojan/virus, I'm surprised it made it through my antivirus and firewall. Anything is possible, really.
Thanks again, I'll get back with results once I get the wounded laptop back up and running.

  • Has anyone else been experiencing CPU panics after upgrading to Mountain Lion?

Mac Pro, 8 core mid 2010, 32 GB RAM, 6 TB storage
Before upgrading to ML, I ran it in Parallels as a VM with no problems.  However, once I upgraded, I began to get CPU panics.  The core dump doesn't really point to a culprit.  I am using Apple approved RAM, all matched pairs at the same speed and I've not added fiber channel to my system yet.  I am running four to five VM's at a time and, during the time of panics, I was not compiling any code.
I've seen similar threads throughout the forums, so I am thinking that this is an OS level issue with a patch coming out at warp speed but I am curious as to wheither or not anyone has found the "smoking gun", the actual trigger for the panics.

Many thanks to the hatter.  Parallels, it seems is the culprit.  I am going to try to find a workaround but this ***** majorily.

  • Has anybody else been having issues with their home button after using assistive touch for a little while?

Me and my brother have been messing with Assistive Touch on and off since iOS 5 canme out. We been noticing that when we actually move to use the home button, sometimes it doesnt respond. Though I'm all for thinking my home button my be on the fritz, it wouldnt explain how mine and my brother suddenly have issues with our home buttons at the same time. Both of us had a time where the home button didnt respond at all. and its been intermittent ever since. Anybody that has an answer or another case like this I' d like some information

    Reset Home button steps:
    (1) Tap Settings App, when it is open:
    (2) Hold Power button until "slide to power off" bar appears.
    (3) Don't slide it, release power button.

  • Re: Has anyone else been experiencing problems with the GPS on their galaxy s3?

I have the same problem and this update ruined my vacation. I feel like Verizon it's just trying to extort money from us by making us get new phones. How about a fix Verizon, this is getting old

Safe mode does not fix the gps problem. All location services are on. High accuracy is on. Gps will not lock on and google maps and Waze no longer work. I was using Waze for my daily commute but now it will no longer find a lock.  I have cleared the system cache and reset the phone. That did not work. Verizon, you will fix this at you expense. I did not ask for this upgrade and kept putting it off until one morning out was installed. When Russian hackers disable features on our devices and demand money this is called extortion. I have already been told by Verizon phone support to buy a new phone or pay to get this fixed.

Has anybody else experienced this? If so, how did you fix Explorer? I was using Explorer 11 and Windows 7, installed on an HP Pavilion g series

Never heard of that being caused by installing iTunes. Try asking on a Windows forum. This isn't a problem with iTunes or any other Apple product. If you believe it is, uninstall iTunes. If the problem persists, you'll have to seek advice on a Windows forum or contact Microsoft for support.

  • Has anyone else been having trouble with safari ever since the update? I have restarted several times, mans it still doesn't work.

Has anyone else been having trouble with safari ever since the update? I have restarted several times, it still doesn't work.

    Greetings Blueleoapple,
After reading your post, it sounds like you are experiencing an error with Safari. You may want to consider resetting your device, which is different from restarting. This article provides detailed instructions for Restarting, and Reseting:
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    How to restart
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
    How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • Has anybody else noticed a 10-25% openGL slow down with 10.7.5?

Hi,  I was running x-plane 9.70 at certain settings on my 17" MBP (early 2011, 10.7.3) and noticed I was getting about 70 fps... nice.  I do an update on firmware and OS (10.7.5) and I notice that the x-plane fps has dropped to about 55. The settings and environment the same as near as I can get.  I thought this was bad but maybe just x-plane or something peculiar.  I also couldn't tell if the performance drop was caused by the firmware update or the OS update.
I remembered I'd done an xbench benchmark with 10.7.3 so I did a new one with the updates... sure enough the openGL numbers had dropped by 20% or so.  So, I hooked up my backup drive with 10.7.3 on it and ran x-plane and xbench again to try to isolate the firmware update from the OS update.... The results were x-plane still showed a drop of about 10% and xbench about 25%.  Looks like there is something wrong in 10.7.5.
Has anybody else noticed a performance slow down in openGL functions with 10.7.5?

  • I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did).

I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did). But I'd like to use iCloud with iPad.

Hi Pete. The repair of disk permissions can help resolve  any application crashing or misbehaving.
As for Lion and the two camps, I think that is a reasonable observation. In my office we have about a dozen Mac's and about one third of those Mac's had problems after updating from 10.6 to 10.7. The main problem for these Mac's was a loss of wifi stability. But for the other two-thirds, Lion was a smooth transition.
Personally, my Lion experience was fine. But I did get a new i7 MacBook Pro with Lion already installed and only had to migrate my user data from a 10.6.8 TM backup.
So I think that is a key for Lion's operational success. A clean install of Lion on a new Mac would not cause too many operational issues. But an installation, or more correctly, an update to Lion from SL increased the chances of failure for some users - especially when old software & plugins resided on the Mac. And I would say that they were the people that you saw at the Apple store.
As for the "latest release of Lion fixed my problems" statement, my experience with these and other forums is that people mostly only go there to complain about the problems they are having. If they are having no problems then they either keep it to themselves or they try to help the users who are experiencing trouble...

has anybody else had the problem of their iphone5 is saying NO SIM?

You disrespected me initially. I am certainly not the first person in this community to have asked a question that has already been asked. A little patience or perhaps ignorining the question without getting bent out of shape and responding rudely.

  • TS1424 Has anyone else been falsely charged by apple on their iTunes account. Because I have. I'd like to know how often this happens so I can take action.

Has anyone else been falsely charged by apple on their iTunes account? Because I have

If these charges are being made to a credit or debit card, the most immediate thing you need to do is to call your credit card company or bank and report the unauthorized charges. That company can contact Apple if they need additional information.
Next, log into your iTunes Store account and see if the purchases are reflected in the Purchase History. If they are, immediately change the password to your iTunes Store account, making sure it's not something easily guessed or looked up. Then go here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store.
If the charges are not reflected in the Purchase History, then it's most likely a fraudulent charge to your credit card directly rather than an unauthorized purchase through your iTunes Store account and it will be up to your bank to handle.
    Regards.

Has anyone else been getting emails about reseting password when they have not requested it? I have been getting several emails for the past couple of days where it says how to reset when I never asked to do so. Is there anything that should be done about it? Or anything apple can do about it for my email is very different and not easy to guess or duplicate.
