HT4818 Upgrading OS X 10.5.8 Leopard on my iMac w/boot camp 2.0 to Lion and Windows 7?

I have an iMac, 1TB, 3.06 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory. I'm running OS X 10.5.8 Leopard w/boot camp 2.0. The PC side has 240 GB (of the total 1TB) running Windows Vista. I want to upgrade to Lion and Windows 7. Can I perform upgrades without messing the current partions up? I know I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard, then Lion. When I do these upgrades, does it affect the boot camp side? Do i upgrade the Boot camp side separate from Mac side? Can i upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate without upgrading the Mac side? How does the upgrade process work when you have the HD partioned?

Upgrade to Snow Leopard, then update to 10.6.8      Snow Leopard Purchase                     Mac OS 10.6.8 Combo Updater
Before going to Lion or Mountain Lion, check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications aren't supported by either one.         Application Compatibility
If you want to upgrade to Mountain Lion:
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 4,1 or higher
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Xserve (Early 2009) model number 3,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space
If you have applications that you want to use that aren't compatible, you can retain Snow Leopard and create a new partition.

  • Problem upgrading OSX 10.4.11 to leopard on my iMac (intel)

I'm trying to upgrade OSX 10.4.11 to leopard on my iMac (intel) I need to do this so I can update iTunes to sync with the iPhone 4. I'm getting the same error each time I try to install  "OSX cannot be installed on this computer". Can anyone help with this?

I would max out the RAM first, 2 GB is not really enough Memory.
You don't have to go to Leopard 1st, you can go to Snow Leopard, then Lion if you want.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • Leopard 10.6.8  with Boot Camp 3.0.4 do not support Windows XP SP2???

    Hello!
I have my MacBook Pro with Leopard 10.6.8 with Boot Camp 3 on it.Reading a BOOT CAM article I could see that it supports Windows XP SP2.I just installed Windows XP SP2...and when I am trying to use the drivers from MAC DVD it says that BOOT CAMP needs Windows 7.Why I can not use XP?Or where I can get the proper drivers?I have downloaded Boot Camp Drivers XP update pack 2.1 and tried touse it in that XP but just double clicking on it doesn't happen anything:(
    Please Help.

Your saying BC 3.4 is on the Mac installer disk? I picked mine up in august 2011 and it only has 3.1 on it if I remember right. How did you check it?
As of today my BC Assistant says 3.4 but the Control panel in Windows only says 3.3, I figure it an't broke I'm not worried about it.
When you insert the disk, it asks you what to do, Run or Open, select Open.
Make a new folder on the desktop in XP, drag ALL the files over to it.
Right click on the setup.exe and select one of the options:
1)-Troubleshoot Compatibility, do what it suggests,
2)-Select Properties / Compatibility / click Run this program in Compatibility mode: then select XP sp2 and work your way up.
If anything pops up about permissions then right click on it again and select Run as Administrator.
If it still won't work then open the Boot Camp folder / Drivers folder / and install each one manually.

I have recently purchased a hybred 750GbHDD as an upgrade for my MAC Book Pro (Intell Version) I have a boot camp partition to the original 500GB HDD. How can I expand both partitions to fit the new drive?
I have tried bootcamp and have had no luck due to the fact that boot camp doesn't see the additional HDD space of 250Gb. What am I not doing?

Ouch, well there is a problem.
This is the stack of partitions on your old drive
    EFI (hidden)
    Lion (50GB say)
    Bootcamp (50GB say)
    Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
This is the same stack on your new drive imaged from the old one.
    EFI (hidden)
    Lion (50GB say)
    Bootcamp (50GB say)
    Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
    Emtpy Space (100GB say)
    This is what you want
    EFI (hidden)
    Lion (100GB say)
    Bootcamp (100GB say)
    Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
EFI has to be at the top of the drive and Lion Recovery has to be at the bottom of the drive.
And you only have four partitions.
You can't move the Lion Recovery Partition or Bootcamp partiton, however you can expand the Lion Partition into empty space below it. (but can't delete or move the Lion Recovery partition)
Your Duplicator duplicated perfectly, too perfectly Likely would work with same sized drives/partitions.
This is what your going to need to do.
You need to move the Bootcamp partition to a blank external drive using WinClone and disconnect. This is so you have two backups of it. (one on your old 500GB drive)
You will need a drive enclousre or IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable for the older 500GB drive and option key boot from it. (some enclosures can't be booted from so check first Other World Computing is good place to ask)
Download the free Carbon Copy Cloner, grab any new files off the new 750GB internal drive to the old 500GB your booted from.
Open Apple's Disk Utility and Erase with Zero option the entire internal 750GB drive and let it rip, this will map off as many bad sectors and improve reliability.
Now use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the 500GB Lion + Lion Recovery Partitions to the internal 750GB, it will "fix" things and place Lion Recovery at the bottom of the drive where it belongs, give all the extra space to OS X Lion.
Next your going to have to follow WinClones instructions to restore your Bootcamp, likely you will have to recreate the Bootcamp partition first (in Bootcamp) to the size you want and then clone. Likely Winclone may "fix" Windows to recognize it's in a new larger partition now. I don't know you'll have to check as I haven't used it.
When Bootcamp creates the partition it will place it near the bottom next to the Lion Recovery Partition.
As you know you will have to re-validate Windows with Lord Redmond or it expires as you changed the hardware.

No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • My iMac snow leopard 10.6.8 is boot camp not upgrade to OS x Lion!!!

    how to upgrade?

Command + r won't work with Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) - it only works with Lion and Mountain Lion. Did you buy the Mac new - if so it would have shipped with 2 grey disks, one for restoring and one with the iLife apps and a few other bits. If these are missing you'll need to call Apple and purchase replacements giving them the serial number of the Mac. They will make a modest charge for this.

  • How to I run Snow Leopard,  Mountain Lion and Windows 8 on my new iMac

I just bought a new iMac. My goal is to set up 3 different partions to run 3 different operating systems (Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard, and Windows 8).  The reason for this post is because when I attempted to do this same thing on my old iMac ( except I was running Lion instead of Mountain Lion) I was able to create a partion that would run Snow Leopard (so I could run Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 on a more stable platform), however I totally "hosed" my old Bootcamp partition running Windows XP. The iMac won't even bootup in Bootcamp anymore. It is just a black screen and it says something about it not being a bootable drive and to insert a bootable disc.
So I need to know the best way to do this, and I want to avoid having the same problems with my new iMac that I had on my old one, especially since I have a freelance job starting next week and my client is sending me licences for software that I will need to run on Windows 8.
    Thank you in advance

Use the Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 8 and a product such as VirtualBox, VMware Fusion, or Parallels Desktop to run Snow Leopard Server in emulation. That iMac model isn't capable of being booted into Snow Leopard.

  • If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks wil I get iWork for free, If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks wil I get iWork for free

If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks will I get iWork for free.

If you buy a new Mac with Mountain Lion, any included software is free and can be redownloaded from AppStore for that machine only. Some software only gets reinstalled if OS X (only) gets installed over itself to fix issues. See #8 Step here.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If you upgrade to Mavericks usually only OS X itself is changed (sometimes the hidden User Library is also), all the  software (and user accounts) also carries over (compatible or not), and Apple's software is upgraded.
So if your new Mountain Lion Mac comes with free iWork, then when you upgrade to Mavericks it will still be there.
If your new Mountain Lion does not come with free iWork, then it won't magically appear for free if you upgrade to Mavericks.
If you need a free Office suit, I suggest you look at the donationware LibreOffice.
You will likely need to control key or right click to "Open" LibreOffice to approve through OS X's "Gatekeeper".
You will need to manually update it also, as it's not on AppStore.
    https://www.libreoffice.org/
Benefit of LibreOffice is it's completely cross-platform compatible, so you can share working files with Windows and Linux users, which you can't with iWork.
You also should learn Microsoft Office when you have the funds, because it's standardized in the business world.

  • Option to boot into leopard has disappeared         mac pro/boot camp

I have a mac pro. running the latest version of leopard. quad core xeon 2.66 w.4 GB of RAM. Runs like a dream. Sadly, however, I absolutely had to run a windows program natively. So I dutifully went out and bought a copy of vista, installed it via boot camp, and went merrily on my way. Booting in and/or out of either OS, as warranted, was perfectly smooth. Then I had a few weeks away from work, and when I returned, it was as if leopard had vanished. Starting up I found myself in windows. Odd, as I had the defaults set to open in MacOS. So I restart, holding down the option key. No MacOS. Only windows. Then I see that Vista is yelling at me cuz I have yet to "activate" it and I now apparently have a fake OS. So I activate the *****, all goes well, my fake copy is now miraculouslt genuine again. So I restart again, holding down the option key, and no change from before. So I do it again only this time I zap the PRAM first, and THEN hit option, and same thing, windows only. So I go into windows looking for the Boot Camp Assistant control panel thingie, guess what, it aint there. So I go to startup and recovery options in Windows (control panel, system, advanced) and attempt to reset the default to Mac, only there is no Mac option. OK so now I am perplexed as ****. So I do a system restore in windows, to a restore point just a couple weeks ago when I am, in fact, quite sure that everything worked. and I could boot into and use either OS with ease. Once it restores and restarts, I'm back in windows AGAIN but now it says my OS is a fake (again) and I have to activate it (again) and STILL no sign of Mac OS or boot camp assistant or anything like it anywhere. I dont wanna do anything else cuz now I am seriously afraid I am gonna f* it all up even more. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help. I am doomed. Where did my leopard go? What do I do? How do I fix this? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR SAVING MY ABOUT-TO-BE-MEANINGLESS life...

There is a chance you somehow programed your machine to boot to Windows only. To undo this you need a functional Boot Camp Manager. You can repair the Boot Camp Manager using your OSX install DVD - WHILE IN WINDOWS. (Just boot to Vista and shove the DVD in the optical drive - then the re-installation of Boot Camp Drivers and BC Manager can begin).
Before you do that - right-click My Computer then click Explore. Click local disk (C). Next click Program Files and Boot Camp should be about 5 or 6 items down (alphabetically) Click Boot Camp then kbd.mgr (KeyBoard Manager) IF THIS activates Boot Camp Keyboard Manager you'll have no problems choosing an OSX reboot option. NOTE - in my own case, clicking kbd.mgr only prompted the tray icon to appear (which for me is great because I can right-click that icon to access the Boot Camp controls....) but it might work either way.
If it is gone / broken - then find and Click your Set Program Access and Defaults and then Click Change or Remove Programs. You might still have enough of your old Boot Camp Install there left to start a repair (without the DVD). Just locate Boot Camp Services and Click "Change" and repairs will begin.
Anyway - using the Boot Camp Manager you can force a reboot to OSX just by choosing. Good luck.

  • Upgrade to lion and windows 7 is not starting

I upgraded to lion and for the first time tried to run windows 7 since the upgrade and it does not work.  It worked fine before but I'm not totally sure this is the cause of the issue.  I have tried to restart windows half a dozen times but cannot get it to boot correctly.  Working in the safemode isn't allowing me to boot from the windows disc to try and trouble shoot.  I don't want to reinstall 7 if possible.  Thanks for the help.

    Hi,
Yes, I agree with Rick, something important must be broken during the process of installing the cloning program which causes the failure of all repair options, before the final option of reinstalling your system, refer to this link,
    TrueCrypt Rescue Disk
    http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/rescue-disk
when preparing the encryption of a system partition/drive, it should create a TrueCrypt Rescue Disk, which can be helpful when your
Windows is damaged and cannot start.
    See this part:
If Windows is damaged and cannot start, the TrueCrypt Rescue Disk allows you to permanently decrypt the partition/drive before Windows starts. In the Rescue Disk screen, select
Repair Options > Permanently decrypt system partition/drive. Enter the correct password and wait until decryption is complete. Then you can e.g. boot your MS Windows setup CD/DVD to repair your Windows installation.
Note: Alternatively, if Windows is damaged (cannot start) and you need to repair it (or access files on it), you can avoid decrypting the system partition/drive by following these steps: Boot another operating system, run TrueCrypt, click
Select Device, select the affected system partition, select System >
Mount Without Pre-Boot Authentication, enter your pre-boot-authentication password and click
OK. The partition will be mounted as a regular TrueCrypt volume (data will be on-the-fly decrypted/encrypted in RAM on access, as usual).

  • If I downgrade to Snow Leopard can time machine back-up my latest memory from Lion and keep it in Snow leopard?

Will only the latest time machine back-up from SL work or can a back-up with lion be suitable in SL (when downgraded)?

Just did the downgrade, but Migration Assistant don't let you rescue any kind of information from the Time Machine backup. It just tells you to upgrade your system. I'm feelling like trying to downgrade my iPhone 3G from iOS 4 to 3. Impossible. Pretty f***** up...

  • I'm trying to install Windows XP on my Leopard 10.5.8 using Boot Camp Assistant but when it restarts it says I should insert a bootable disk even though I didn't remove the installer from the drive. What should I do?

More info: I'm using an external CD drive because the built-in one doesn't work for some reason.
Also I went back and deleted the partition (also using Boot Camp Assistant) and just gave up on installing XP, but now every time I turn on my macbook I have to press the Option key to mount the Mac HD. If I don't, it returns to the black screen that says I have to insert the bootable disk and press any key. How do I stop this problem? I've already verified the disk and permissions, plus repaired it. It's still the same.

Go into your system preferences and click the startup disk icon then select your Mac HD.

  • HT4818 after installing boot camp 4 on mountain lion " Missing operating system"

    Hello
I hade a small Windows 7 partition , so after updating to mountain lion , I wanted resize win partition .
I made an image of it , then deleted win partition from utility disk , ( wrong idea )
I didn’t notice that boot camp  could erase win partition , anyway I have tried several times , and always after reboot boot camp
    I get the same
    Missing operating system .
If I boot from dvd install win or if i boot from the boot win partition.
hd and partitions looks OK to utility disk
Any idea to fix the problem ?

I presume that you've followed the instructions for sideloading the iMac Windows drivers into your install via USB stick? (wasn't aware the EFI recognized the SD slot as storage on boot. Now i know)
I always found more success in just slipstreaming the drivers and install.xml file onto a custom Win7 DVD rather than the USB approach when trying with my Late 2009 27" iMac. The Win7 installer needs that enclosed .xml file in the driver package to tell it where to find the drivers so that they be loaded when the Win7 image extracts itself.
If you're using mountain lion, then you should be receiving the proper Win7 driver set. If you wanted to create a custom image, then you can use an ISO file, the driver package and disk utility to make something you can use. Either that or you learn what edits your install.xml file needs to point the installer properly and check it manually.
I don't know what links you have so i'll just include everything:
Installing boot camp on a Late 2009 iMac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173
Direct link to Late 2009 iMac-specific Windows drivers.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL995
I'd try a USB stick and the iMac-specific driver set. It should steer your insolent windows installer correctly.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT4818 Will the PC version of Adobe Premiere CS5 work on Apple Boot Camp?

Im a Videography/Digital Artist. I currently work on a PC with the Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, After Effects, Audition, Encore and Media Encoder CS5.5. I'm looking at getting the Apple MAC Book Pro. My question is will the PC Adobe software work with the Apple Mac Book Pro while using Boot Camp? Is there any limitations? If I'm editing on my PC and need to transfer my files to the Apple Mac Book Pro will it cause any problems?

With a Boot Camp installation, you are starting up to, and running Windows in every sense of the word. It's just on Apple hardware rather than Dell, Sony, etc. There's no reason it shouldn't work. On a similar note, I just recently did have Premiere Pro CS6 installed on my Win 7 Boot Camp drive for some testing and it ran perfectly.
