HT4848 No Recovery HD on my mac.

I have Mountain Lion Installed and there is no Recovery HD on my mac. How do I get it?

I'm not sure if you are asking about getting an actually recovery disk or getting the Recovery Disk Assistant software. If you are looking for the Assistant, you can read about it's use and download from Apple's Support Pages HERE.
Seem's obvious, but if you want a recovery disk, you need to buy an external HDD. Recovery Disk Assistant is used to create a recovery disk on an external HDD.

I am in Mavericks disk utility recovery mode as my mac book pro will not boot up & stays on the Apple grey screen . When I verify disk permissions I get
Open error 5:"input/ output error" on syst with over 50 of this messages & still counting . Disk Utility says 1 minute
But this has been going on for over 10 mins .
I can not verify disk or repair disk .
I have tried to reinstall mavericks operating system but it says my hard drive is locked which is very strange .
Does anyone know what is going on here ?
My system looks like it has been totally corrupted . Thanks Andrew

Could be. The "lock" isn't actually looking for a password.
WARNING: This will completely erase the ENTIRE hard drive.
What you would need to do is boot to recovery > disk utility > select the MAIN drive on the left side > partition > change partition layout from CURRENT to 1 PARTITION > ensure on the right side it says Format : Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) then push APPLY.
Then if it will allow us, close the windows until you see the 4 options popup again and select "Reinstall Mac OS X" select the Mac HD and you should be good to go!

How do I make a recovery disk for my Mac running 10.5.8?

Hi, if tryly a PowerMac, (PPC instead of Intel), you may need a Firewire Drive to be bootable, most PPC Macs cannot boot OSX from a USB drive.
So we know more about it...

    Hello, sullivja.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article I would recommend going through when experiencing this issue.

  • Osx lion: available space on my HD has increased significantly since the iCloud and recovery disc updates for Mac.

osx lion: available space on my HD has increased significantly (doubled!) since the iCloud and recovery disc updates for Mac. I am guessing OSX Lion now recalculates what is 'available' as I have not deleted anything major. I have two MacBook Air's (1 core 2 duo and 1 i5), both with 256 drives. I am also running win 7 on Parallels 7. Any thoughts?

you can't necessarily download the Mountain Lion installer via the App Store since it came already installed on your computer.
Not true. You can go to the Mac App Store and download the installer
(from the link that WALTER-MILANO-ITALY posted above)
Install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion
If you completed your installation of OS X, your installer may have been removed after your successful first login to OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion.  Mac App Store's Purchases page should show Install OS X as being "Installed", and disallow its download, when viewed from a computer running OS X.
To redownload the installer on a computer running OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion, press and hold the Option key while you click the Purchases tab. If the button to the right of the Install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion item doesn't change to "Install" and allow you to download OS X, use Spotlight to search for "Install OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion" on your computer.

  • Data recovery house tainted my Mac-only files: help!

I sent a failed ext. FW drive (clicking sound, wouldn’t mount) to a fairly-well-known data recovery specialist that advertised PC and Mac formats. The drive contained numerous Mac-only files, including Sound Designer II audio files (.sd2), Final Cut Pro (.fcp), and Digital Performer files (native, no suffix), to name a few.
After said specialist started working on the drive, it became frighteningly apparent that they were not up to speed on Mac systems. To make a long story short, after a couple of weeks I received a hard drive formatted FAT32, and every Mac-only file showed up in Finder as a Unix Executable file.
My first thought was they were using Windows-based software and had corrupted all my Mac-only files beyond repair. Forging ahead and knowing nothing about scripts, I used a 3rd party program called Super Get Info and was able to change the Type and Author of the Digital Performer files, and got them to open. So far, so good. But changing the Type and Author of the .sd2 files didn’t yield the same results; Finder sees the type, size, etc. but no audio program (DP, Peak, Jam) will open them.
Thinking I was screwed, I opened another project in DP that contained audio files which were still recognized in Finder as Unix Executables, and they played! I have no idea why this works---no other program will open them independently---but it shows if I can get an app to recognize them, they are still valid files.
Is there a way to dig deeper, besides just changing the Type and Author, to essentially get back all the header(?) information that was originally there in the .sd2 files (before the "data recovery") so an audio program can see that these are indeed valid files and legit to operate on? Something in Developer Tools, 3rd party, etc.?
    Thanks,
    Roger

Extern firewire drives often come formatted as FAT32 - so unless you reformatted it yourself that may have been the way it was. When Mactintosh files are saved to a FAT32 file system, the resource information is written to a file with a ._ added to the front of the file name. If you go to a terminal window and cd to your extern drive, "ls -A" will show if the resource information is there. For a file call "file.s2d", you should see a hidden file call "._file.s2d". Some utilites have trouble creating resource forks on FAT32 drives - so your utility may not be working. Try moving some of your files back to your main drive and correct the Creator and file type there - may be that will work.

  • HT4848 what recovery assistant is recommended for the intel core 2 duo 2gb macbook?

After sending a flashdrives contents to the waste basket and emptying it, for some reason the file on the desktop containing identical files lost part of its content. Can I recover either the flash drive or the contents of the folder using some recovery app/software. I downloaded stellar phoenix but its behaviour is odd and unsuccessful , possibly due me. Is there a simple program you can recommend?
    Thank You.

Go with the new model. You wouldn't notice much "real-world" difference between the two processors. With the new unit, you will get a much better screen, better trackpad and stronger graphics. It's a no brainer.

  • Recovery Partition missing on Mac HD with OSX Mavericks

When the Mac HDD/SSD was erased from the Mavericks Installer, rather than the Recovery Partition being upgraded to Mavericks, it was instead erased, and because the installer was meant to upgrade the Recovery Parittion, rather than create a Recovery Partition, it proceeded with the installation of Mavericks, omitting the update to the Recovery Parition, because at this point it had already been removed. The good news is, this is exactly one of the reasons we now offer Internet Reocvery as an additonal installation Option.
To enter internet Reocvery, press and hold “Option”, “Command” and the letter “R” while your computer boots up. Keep holding those three keys, until you see a progress indicator. It migght take a few minutes for Recovery to Load, but when it does, you will be asked to select a language to proceed, than you will be brought to OS X Utilties. From here, just follow the steps below to re-add Recovery to your Mac:
    1. Select Disk Utility, then click Continue.
    2. Select your SSD disk on the left, then click the Erase tab.
    3. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format menu, enter a name, then click Erase.
    4. After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
    5. Select Reinstall OS X, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.
After following these steps, and allowing OS X to reinstall, you will be able to activate Find My Mac, and FileVault as needed!

  • IPhone 5 stuck in recovery mode (Error 2006 (Mac) 2009 (Windows)

Hi everyone, my iPhone 5 has just randomly stopped working. It's out of warranty so Apple won't help at all. The screen just wouldn't turn on at all so I opened it up and checked out all the connections and somehow I got the screen on, when plugged in it shows an iTunes logo so I plugged it into my computer and it said it was in recovery mode. I try to restore and I get Error 2006 on my Mac and Error 2009 on my windows computer. I have tried all different ports and all different lightning connectors to no avail. I have also replaced the battery which didn't help.
I'm thinking it is the charging port but I'm not sure. Does it seem like I should replace that?

  • Can you make a recovery disk with a mac?

I have two mac computers. One works that I currently use for personal use. But I recentlly bought a "fixer up iBook G4" that needs an install disk of 10.5 Leopard. I cannot find my disks that came with my Powerbook g4 but can I make a restore disk or recovery disk so I can restore the operating system that's on the iBook g4?
    Thanks in advance!

Connect the two computers using a FireWire cable. Use Target Disk Mode to clone the one drive to the other. Boot the iBook into TDM, then boot the PB normally. The iBook's drive should appear on the PB's Desktop. Use Disk Utility to erase the iBook's hard drive, then use Restore to clone the PB's drive to the iBook:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination
          entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Can't access Recovery Mode on old Mac

I've had an old Mac lying around unused for the last few years.
It is currently running (from "About this Mac")
    OS X version 10.5.8
    Dual 1.3 GHz PowerPC G4
2 MB L3 cache per processor
    768 MB SDRAM
    It's a Power Mac G4
I want to completely wipe this computer so it's in absolute factory settings with nothing left behind by me, so I can sell it for a small price and possibly take a couple of parts for a build I'm thinking about.
I Tried the Restart, Command + R method of accessing Recovery Mode multiple times with no success. It takes around 30 seconds to boot each time so I'm not missing the "window" to do it, I think. (I beggin the Key Combo when I hear the chime)
i don't have any disks for this computer as it was pre-owned, at least 5 years ago, from a guy I've lost touch with. I don't want to back up any files.
can anyone help me reset this dusty old calculator?

    Man in despair,
The pre-2006 PowerMacs this foru serves cannot run OS 10.6.8. What Mac to you have? We can get you moved to the proper forum for your Mac.
Never be hesitant to start a new thread. When you tag onto another, especially one like this that appears to be about a different Mac model, you dilute the help the original poster deserves. It is also confusing to the rest of use and some very knowlegeable helpers here will not respond to a tag-on (also known as a "thread-jack.")
So fast help require you to make a new thread in teh forum that matches you Mac model.

  • HT4848 Has Recovery Disk Assistant worked restoring Mtn Lion to a new Disk?

I recently had an issue with my Mac Mini (mid 2010), it has been upgraded 2 times to Mountain Lion, and I am trying to install OS 10.8.2 back on the mini but with a new blank drive. Has this utility worked for anyone? BTW please relate your experiences trying to restore the latest version of OS X to a new drive.
This would help me out a huge amount as I have wasted enough time listening to the "Experts".
    TIA

    HansOnTech wrote:
... Has this utility worked for anyone?
You should be able to use use OS X Internet Recovery as long as you upgraded your mid-2010 Mini's firmware. I have done it and can confirm that it works, even with a new, empty, unformatted hard disk.
If for some reason it does not work for you, it will be unproductive to determine the reason for now. In that case you must boot from another device, use Disk Utility to format it, and subsequently install a version of OS X. You can reinstall Mountain Lion by downloading it again from the Mac App Store. It will appear under the "purchases" tab.
The usual way of doing this is to boot from your original grey System Restore DVD (hold the c key while you start your Mini). If you have an external drive containing a bootable OS X volume you can boot using Startup Manager (hold an Option key while you start your Mini). If you have a Time Machine backup, you can boot from it, which will load OS X Recovery and allow you to restore from your Time Machine backup.

What is the best way to recover information on your hard disk from a mac book pro that will not start from water damage?

When my daughter's MBP died due to drop-related damage, I removed the hard drive and placed it in this enclosurehttp://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ES2.5BPU2S/ and she now connects it to her new MBP by the USB port when she wants material from the old drive.
