HT4848 Recovery HD (Mac) vs Recovery Disk (thumb drive)?

What is the difference between the Recovery Disk on the thumb drive and the Recovery HD on the Mac? In what situations would you use each one?

On the computer itself:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Using the USB flash drive:
Insert USB drive into a USB port.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
Release the key when the boot manager appears.
Select the Recovery HD icon on the USB device.
Click on the arrow button below the icon.
EDIT:
As Baltwo has suggested you can make a fully bootable Lion installer:
Make Your Own Lion Installer
1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.
The catch here is you must have a copy of the Lion installer application. If you downloaded Lion from the App Store and installed it, then it was automatically deleted after the installation. That means you need to sign into the App Store while running Snow Leopard to redownload Lion for free.
If your computer came with Lion pre-installed then there is no obvious way to get the installer application needed. This will necessitate using the methods outlined in Downloading Hardware Specific Lion Installers to obtain the installer.

  • Mac OS X Lion thumb drive clean install

I just recently bought the Mac OS X Lion thumb drive, so that I can quickly upgrade my current version (10.5.8). I understand that I have to do a clean install and I have already backed up my hard drive. When I open the thumb drive it says that I cannot install 10.7 with my current version. How do I get this to work? I have tried to search for the hard drive photo ( .dmg file) under what most have said is the "Sharedresources" folder....except my thumb drive doesnt have a folder called shared resources under "contents."

  • ENVY dv7t-7200 Replace hard drive and restore from recovery disk/flash drive

I am replacing the HDD on my ENVY dv7t, running Windows 8. The existing drive is a 5400 rpm 1TB and I am replacing with a 750GB Seagate momentus XT.  Largely, the reason is performance and I don't need that large of a drive.  The plan is to remove the old drive and replace it with the 750GB mentioned above.  I have the Recovery image on a 32G thumb drive, so the plan is to restore the image on the new drive.
Any issues that I should be aware of?  Will this work?

    Hi,
The dv7t-2000 is a CTO machine therefore I can't see its specs, I belive it has room for another HDD/SSD and you can utilize/utilise it. There are few known firmware problem with the 750GB Seagate momentus XT. Please check the firmware first (must be SD28 or later). Other than that should be fine.
    Regards.

  • My Mac Pro will read thumb-drive but not CF card reader

Can someone help me resolve this problem?
I just erased everything off my Mac Pro and reconfigured everything (as new). I installed all my programs, primarily Aperture3 and Photoshop CS5
    (using Leopard).
I had NO problem uploaded some photos into Aperture3 from a thumb drive using the USB port, BUT,
when I tried to upload photos from my card reader the MacPro does not recognize the card reader using the same USB port.
I figured the problem was a bad card reader, so I tested it on my PC and it recognized the card reader and uploaded all the photos.
Also, the card reader's green light turns on when attached to the MacPro, as if it is working and connected but it does not register in Finder or desktop to indicate that the card reader is installed.
I even tried to upload directly from my Canon 7D and it also did NOT recognize the camera.
Why would the MacPro recognize the thumb drive on the same USB port and not the card reader or the camera?

  • How do i completely get rid of my Macintosh HD so I can start fresh and install mac os x Lion thumb drive

I just purchased the thumb drive for OS X Lion. As far as I know, because I only have 10.5.8 and I do not want to purchase Snow Lpd. I can just delete everything and start from scratch (according to an employee at the Apple Store). The problem is that I have no idea how to "start from scratch", its not as easy as dragging my Macintosh HD icon from my desktop to the trash can. HELP!

If you really want to start fresh and you have ANY PERSONAL files already backed up, or you don't care about them, stick the thumb drive in the USB port and reboot the system. Hold down the Option key when you hear the apple startup sound, let it go after about 15-20 second. That will give you a screen where you select which drive to boot off of, select the thumb drive. Once that has booted go to Disk Utility and RE-Partition the drive. That will wipe all information off it. Once that is done close Disk Utility and you will be back at the original screen. Select Install OS X Lion.
    Have fun.

  • Low disk space in recovery disk (d) drive in window 8.1

I continue to receive the subject warning. I have never added any files to D, but I have 32.3 MB free of 25.5 GB. I have Administrator privilrges but am unable to view the files on D. When I click on recovery, I get an HP warning.

    Hi @pjd10
I grasp that you are a low disk space error on recovery D.  I regret that you are having that difficulty.
Here is a link to HP PCs - Error: Low Disk Space. You are running out of disk space on Recovery (Windows 8) that should guide you to resolving this issue.

  • I have no recovery disk or Drive! How can I upgrade or restore?

I bought my Mac (2008) running OS X 10.6.8 second hand in 2010 and never had a problem until now.
It seems to be running extremely slow at times and I have ran diagnostics checks with the hard drive seemingly OK, Ram is Ok, plenty of storage free, not running excessive processes/programs at one time and with nothing clogging up the desktop.
So with this in mind, I've tried to upgrade to Mavericks to find that when it's 'preparing to install' it gets to the final second and stalls for hours.  At this point I decided to try and restore the comp to run OS X 10.6.8 to find that the div who sold me the comp sent the wrong OS!
Now I have no recovery drive, no disk to restore the Mac and I'm kinda stuck.  Any advice would be much appreciated!

Buy a copy of Snow Leopard (10.6) on disk and install it.
    Buy Snow Leopard on Disk.
Never try to fix problems by upgrading, it doesn't work. Fix the problems then upgrade.
    Good luck.

Okay, I am so tired of receiving Low Disk Space on recovery (D). I have done everything it asked. Empty Recycle Bin which is EMPTY. I am not a computer wizard but it seems unfair that I have pay over $150.00 year to correct this problem once a year. I have checked a lot of places and it just keeps telling me the same thing. That doesn't work. Can someone explain to me in English (plain) how to correct this problem.

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that you are not able to verify the contents of the D Drive after the restoration of your notebook, and that the amount of free space on the D Drive has been reduced. Did you place these folders and files yourself into the D Drive, or did you make a backup for later use? When you stated that you made a "restoration" of the notebook, did you perform a system restore or system recovery? I would be happy to help you, but first I would encourage you to post your product number for your computer. Below is a is an HP Support document that will demonstrate how to find your computer's product number. In addition, it will also help if you indicate which operating system you are using; and whether your operating system is 32 or 64 bit. The more information you can provide, the better!

  • How do I dowmload my recovery disk drive to a 32GB flash drive

How do I copy or download my recovery disk (D drive) onto a 32GB flash drive?

Your HP 500-164 has WIN8.0. If you upgrade to the free WIN8.1, it has a built-in create USB recovery drive.
    NOTE:
If your PC came with Windows 8 and you upgraded it to Windows 8.1, your recovery drive will include Windows 8, and you’ll need to upgrade to Windows 8.1 after you refresh or reset your PC.

  • Recovery Disk (D:) is disabled

    Greetings,
I'm in need of some assistance with a problem on a Recovery Disk D: Drive.
Using HP Recovery Manager, I have been trying to do a system recovery on a laptop to restore it back to factory settings; however, it says that the Recovery Disk D:  drive is disabled. I successfully did a factory restore just using only a windows 7 install disk, but the Recovery Disk D: drive remains disabled. I would like to reset the laptop manually, with all the pre-programs that came installed on it, but first I need to fix this issue in order to do so .
    Please help me,
The laptop model is a HP Pavilion g6 with a Windows 7 64-bit system.
    Thank you.

If you did not burn a Recovery Disc set using HP Recovery Manager, you will need to contact HP Support to order a set. You can usually order online from your model's support page if you are in the US or Canada.
Worldwide contact info for HP Support can be accessed here>>Contact HP
If you would like for me to find your support page please post full Model and Product number as listed on the Service Tag attached to bottom of laptop.

  • Renewing HP recovery disk

First time using this site, hope I'm in the right place.  I have a HP 120-1333w.
When I first got it I created a recovery disk, flash drive.  I've done a complete
system restore.  I have the five CD's from HP but I did the complete recovery on HP's website, much easier.
Anyway, back to the first disk I did on a flash drive.
I want the information I've go on our PC NOW.
Should I delete the information on the flashdrive I'd created some months ago and
then put my current information on that flash drive?
    Hope this makes sense.
I keep having that HP  round blue question with a red !.  Driving me crazy, not really just annoying.
When I open it it says create a recovery disk.  If I do the aforementioned, will that solve that issue.
Don't know what an invalid HTML is found in the body, oops, sorry.

If I understand correctly-you want to delete the files on the flash drive done as an earlier backup. If so yes you can delete those & make the new copy of current files.

  • Thumb Drive

Ok, I have a new MBP C2D waiting at home for me (Going home for turkey break) and today I tried using my new thumb drive with one of the library Apple computers and it could not open up. I just say 3 files that the OS didn't know exactly how to open. This concerns me because obviously I want to use my thumb drive when I actually do get me new computer. Is this happening because I have windoze - only software on it to password protect it? If I delete that software should I be alright? Is there any Apple software out there for thumbs that can password protect my thumb or even have my thumb synchronize with certain folders on my computer.
Sorry this isn't really a MBP question, but didn't really know how else to label it and I wanted to make sure that it is compatible with my new MBP.
For those of you interested my father said it is one **** of a machine, great screen, no dead pixels, does not get hot, great wireless connection. So far everything looks great. (knock on wood)

Macs are much better at reading files written on drives formatted for other file systems than PCs are. That being said, if there's a PC program encrypting your files, then the Mac won't be able to run it. One option you have is use Boot Camp or Paralles to run XP (or whatever) on your Mac. This is the only way I can think of to use encryption software that will work on both platforms. You could put Mac files on the thumb drive and encrypt them using StuffIt. The PC couldn't read them though.
