can I use icloud to backup my mac?

iCloud does not provide general file storage, nor backup for Macs (only iOS devices): and if as your signature states you are running 10.4.11 you can't use iCloud at all except in the single case of being able to access email on a pre-existing iCloud account.
If you want online storage/backup you will need a third-party alternative - this page examines some options, but note that it's likely that they all require a reasonably recent system:

To back up all your data you are better off getting an external hard drive.  For details on iCould, read: http://www.apple.com/icloud/.

  • I am using MS Office 2010 and Windows XP Professional, can I use iCloud for backup of my files and documents?

I am using MS Office 2010 and Windows XP Professional, can I use iCloud for backup of my files and documents? I am planning to transition to a Mac so using the iCloud seems to make the most sence.

No, it is not a backup method at all.  If you delete a sync'd file on any device, you delete it permanently from iCloud.  That by its very essence is not a backup solution therefore.  A backup solution does not automatically and simultaneiously delete the file everywhere when it is deleted from the original source.
iCloud is strictly a syncronization tool for using files on multiple internet connected devices.

  • Can I use ICloud as backup for my huge movie archive ?

Hi Mac Friends, first I have to admit that I am not a computer expert, but willing to learn. I have many movies stored on 2 external HDD's, approx 3,5 TB, and I am scared of loosing data for any stupid reason. What's the best, saving data on another HDD, or using ICloud ? Thanks to all who are responding

You can't use iCloud for general file storage such as your movies.  There are other cloud-based options available that will, some of which are listed here on Roger Wilmut's site: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/missing/inicloud3.html.
If might be cheaper to just copy them to another external HDD or two, and save these offsite or in a fire safe if you're concerned about losing them.

  • Can i use iCloud for connecting a mac mini with a macbook?

I want to know if the connection between mac mini and a macbook is possible.
Or do i have to use an i phone as well?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can sync calendars, contacts and mail between computers.
Documents requires mobile versions of iWork to work, but If you want to upload documents that aren't for use with iOS devices this User Tip might be of interest.

I have HughesNet satellite for an ISP with a capped amount of Internet capacity. How can I use iCloud but adjust the time it is on to conserve my Internet allowance and not have to back up my information all the time?

    Thanks Roger W1,
Yes, I was using iTunes to sync over cable without problems since orinigal purchase in 2011 and using 10.6 w/o problem. There was an "update" in Nov 2012 that crashed the sync service. I went to the Apple Store and reviewed the problem with the Geniuses there. It was discovered at that time that the update included mandated use of iCloud but enough of the un-updated code remained that he was able to patch functions to allow Microsoft Office to still sync over iTunes.
This March (+/-) there was another "update" to 10.6 that totally destroyed the patch that was in place so there was no sync service available between Microsoft and iTunes what-so-ever. Then recently, because of some unknown process, all my notes, contacts, and calendars were erased in both my Apple utilities and Microsoft utilities.
After many hours of frustration I was able to recover most of the information to the Apple utilities only, but those were unstable. At my visit to the Apple store it was suggested that an upgrade to 10.8 might solve the stability problem. That it did but being connected to the iCloud all the time keeps using up all my Internet time and I have nothing left to check emails or do research.
This, to me, is not my problem but one created by Apple. I have searched the Internet and support groups and there doesn't seem to be a solution.
The "aircraft mode" turns off all other communication functions and is not acceptable. Neither is disconnecting/turning off Airport on my MBP.
    Thanks,
    Jay

  • Can I use iCloud if I no longer have an Apple product?

My phone was corrupted when I updraded to iOS7. After 3 visits and 3 complete wipeouts and resets - the last time using no restore because they told me the backups were corrupted -  it still is very unstable. I cannot use the phone is this condition. This beautiful phone was in perfect condition before it was damaged by the unstable upgrade process. Even my battery is still excellent. I have to get a new phone now and of course I can't buy an iphone since Apple refuses to compensate me in any way for rendering my present phone unstable. Can I use icloud, which I have on my Windows PC, after I no longer have my iphone? Verizon will allow me to trade it in for a gift card but it must be turned off cellular service and then surrendered. How can I make the transfer without loosing data?

Your data will remain in iCloud, and can still be accessed from your PC, even if you no longer have your iPhone.  Just be sure not to delete the data from your phone while it is still signed into your account, or it will also be deleted from iCloud.  Instead, if you are turning in the phone, follow the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5661.  Before doing so, if you want to save your photos, save any photo stream photos to your camera roll, then import them to your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
Also, Apple will delete any iCloud backups after 180 days of inactivity.  If you're planning on replacing it with another iPhone, you'll want to do so before your backup is deleted.

  • HT204053 My wife just got this iPad mini and I want to copy the address book on my iPad 2 over to the mini. Can I use iCloud to do this?

My wife just got this iPad mini and I want to copy the address book on my iPad 2 over to the mini. Can I use iCloud to do this and what are the steps. The 2 devices have different Apple IDs.

Download the "My Contacts Backup" app from App Store to your iPad 2. Make a backup and send it by email to your wife's address. Open this email from iPad mini and tap the attachment to import the contacts into iPad mini Contacts app.

  • Can I use ICloud as complete back up for my mac?

Can I use ICloud as a complete backup for my Mac Pro? Word Files, PDFs, Excel etc>?

No.  iCloud is not a general file/document storage service.  There are some alternative cloud-based services that provide this listed on Roger Wilmut's site here: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/missing/inicloud3.html.

  • How do I use iCloud to backup my Macbook Pro?

How do I use iCloud to backup my Macbook Pro?

    Hi Rob
It sounds like my problem is the same as yours..... Sorry, but I'm a bit of an iPad dummy so am writing for some more clarification...
My problem is..... I am away from home and only travelling with my iPad, however we have sold our house and my bigpond email address on my iPad is getting clogged with all the solicitors stuff etc, so I really need these emails for my files...
I want to be able to backup these up (so that I can retrieve them later to print out and file) and delete them from my iPad...
I've just created an iCloud email account (I think) is this what you did? So should I forward all my emails to this iCloud email account? And will I be able to retrieve them later?
I hope you login here to see my question.....
    Thanks Janet

  • Can i use iCloud keychain with my own passwords and not with what is assigned and stored?

Can i use iCloud keychain with my own passwords and not with what is assigned and stored?

    tammersalem wrote:) <-HDMI-> (HDTV)
    My main concerns are:
-If I use iTunes on my main computer, will it then be available to Apple TV?
-If I use Apple TV to download will it be available to my Main computer?
-Can the Apple TV use a media server for storage over LAN (using NTFS Samab or otherwise)?
Basically iTunes feeds AppleTv with media either syncing (copying to it) or streaming live.
Media must be compatible with AppleTV.
AppleTV requires a proper iTunes instance running - it cannot access a NAS directly.
If you store media in a folder on a NAS and it's part of the computer iTunes library (just stored on the NAS vs internal/external drive), then when running iTunes makes this content available to AppleTV.
    Data will travel:
NAS > network > iTunes > network to AppleTV
As the path is potentially slower than internal/external attached drive > iTunes > network > AppleTV, it may or may not work robustly for streaming.
If AppleTv is set to sync (it can also stream in this mode), when you purchase direct on AppleTV, the media should sync back to where the itunes library is stored (via iTunes) to keep things in sync and to allow you to backup the media.
You cannot drag/drop media to/from AppleTv across the network, nor can it directly access storage itself - iTunes is an essential cog in the wheel.
The majority of commercial 'in-built iTunes media servers' will not work directly with AppleTV as it has to be 'paired' with iTunes by entering a numerical code in iTunes and does not simply see 'shared libraries'.

  • Can I use icloud on Mac OS 10.6.8

MMac 10.6..8 OSs, have huge itunes library, can I use icloud to store these files

iCloud requires OS X 10.7.5 or higher.  However, iTunes Match doesn't require an iCloud account, and can be subscribed to separately in iTunes (see iTunes Store: Subscribing to iTunes Match).
Also, while you can use iTunes Match to store your music in iCloud and delete it from your Mac, it isn't recommended.   Before you do, be sure to read this first: FAQ: Why iTunes Match Can Not Be Used as a Backup.

  • Can you use iCloud to transfer data from one iPod to another?

Hi, I'm a newbie to Apple. I'm getting another iPod touch with bigger storage, the only data I care about is Clash of Clans. Can I use iCloud to back up the data, and restore it to the iPod I want? Please help, I don't want to lose my data without the right directions.

Yes.  Back up your current device to iCloud, the when setting up your new one, restore it to this backup.  It will include your apps and app data (as well as other data and settings).  See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2109.

If you're referring to the iCloud.com website for you account there are no photos there.  Photop Stream is only for syncing photos between iOS devices and Macs.
