  • Time Machine not deleting old back ups?

    I keep getting the error
"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires...."
I use the same 500GB volume for backups all day, every day. I thought the program was supposed to automatically delete old back ups to make room? I do not see any additional settings to confirm this but if you manually delete back up files, it really kind of screws things up. I see back ups that are 4-6 weeks old on the back up volume so there are plenty it could delete. Has anyone else seen this and how do you resolve this problem?
    TIA

Do you mean via the Finder? If so, yes, it does.
If you have deleted any this way, do the following:
    1. Turn TM Off.
    2. Use Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to do a +Repair Disk+ (not permissions) on your TM drive. If it finds errors that it can't fix, try again until it does or you get the exact same results. If they can't be fixed, stop here and post back with the results.
Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).
Also, is there other data on your TM drive? If so, is it in the same partition as TM's backups?

  • Time capsule full - will not delete old back ups

When a back up is attempted on time capsule, I get this message:
    Time Machine Error
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 2.52 GB but only 1.53 GB are available.
Latest successful backup: 10-01-20 at 3:09 PM
The option to delete old back ups is checked.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Ok, update. It would seem that I cant access the backups. I can see the disk image of the back up on my desktop, but cant seem to select it as the back up disk. The only one that I can select is "Time Capsule". There is only one Mac that is being backed up. It says that 784.38 GB of 998.06 GB is available.
So there's about 214 GB used on your internal HD?
Again, please: How large is the Time Capsule? Is there other data on it, besides backups? If so, how much?

Time Machine, for some odd reason, sometimes gets cranky about some particular names. Change yours per #C9 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Network destination already mounted at: /Volumes/Time Capsule-2
Are there two (or more) +sparse bundles+ on your Time Capsule's internal disk? It looks like Time Machine has started a whole new set of backups (thus the "-2" in the name). If so, it won't delete any backups in the first set to make room for new backups in the second one.
Since you started backing-up to this Time Capsule, have you had any hardware repairs done to your Mac? If so, what?

  • How can I delete old back-ups SAP/Oralce from TSM?

    Hi all,
How can I set an expiration date for old back-ups so that they are deleted when reached that date? For our R/3 Enterprise 4.7 on Oracle 9.2.0.7 / AIX 5.2 we use TSM & Backint.
    BR0278I Command output of '/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run/backint
                      Data Protection for mySAP.com(R) technology
Interface between SAPDBA Utilities and Tivoli Storage Manager
                   - Version 3, Release 3, Modification 1  for AIX LF 64-bit -
                     Build: 196  compiled on Feb 24 2003
            (c) Copyright IBM Corporation, 1996, 2003, All Rights Reserved.
    BKI2027I: Using TSM-API version 5.2.2.0 (compiled with 4.2.3.0).

BKI0005I: Start of program at: Fri Mar 23 20:01:45 2007

expir_period will not work when using a SAP agent for backup (backint).
for TSM, you cannot set an expiration date, but you can an expiration based on number of versions.
    check http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v1r1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.itsmerp.doc_5.3.3/fbrg53m039.htm
you need to set a value for MAX_VERSIONS in your init[SID].utl file. Then, you init[SID].bki file will keep a count for versionning.
if you use both brbackup and brarchive, I would adive you use mutiple UTL files... and put links to multiple BKI files by adapting parameter CONFIG_FILE in your UTL file.

  • How to recover old Back ups made with time machine?

After a recovery with time machine to a very early back up, it completly deleted my old back ups from my back up drive? I had almost everything there. how can i get it back? is there any way?

    Hi Patsmith7,
i think I understand what you're asking. You'd like to move the current Time Machine backup to a new HD so that it will never be written over as you continue to use the current HD where the data resides. If that is correct, then just follow the below link which will show you a very simple way of accomplishing this.
If you only want to move a specific date then you will have to follow the same instructions in the link but click on the drop down arrow on the current backup which will show you each instance (date) of the backups. Grab the date that you're interested in and complete the move as instructed in the link to the new HD.

Good Luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Time Machine doesn't delete previous back-ups. Why?

I'm using a 500gb external drive for backing up.
Every time TM tries to do a backup, it says it failed because there isn't enough disk space. Before, TM used to delete old backups to make space for the new one but now it doesn't seem to do it automatically.
I've checked everything I can think of and the preferences window does state that "the oldest back-ups are deleted when your disc becomes full".
It seems to be working if I reduce the size of my backups by excluding more.
Is there a built-in "preference" that Time Machine has to store at least two back-ups?
I'm happy to simply store one backup if I can adjust the setting to do so?
    Any suggestions/advice please?

It will never delete the only backup if only one complete backup remains, no.  If it needs to make a new full backup for any reason, it will only remove the exisiting backup once the new one is complete and in place, so for at least a short period, it would need double the normal backup space.
Without knowing the full history and details of backups on that drive, I would say you are pushing things quite a bit with so little available space.  Depending on just how much changes in any one backup cycle, or if anything needs to be replaced because something gets corrupted, you could get warnings or outright errors.  Basically anything that causes TM to need to make a larger than usual backup could cause you problems.
As Pondini mentions elsewhere in his FAQ, a good rule of thumb is to have a backup drive at least 2x-4x the size of the drive being backed up.  External 1TB drives are pretty cheap these days - you could avoid a lot of headaches if you got and used a larger drive.
An alternative for that drive you have now is to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner (Bombich software) or SuperDuper (Shirt Pocket software) and make a full bootable system clone, then use the incremental option in those tools to keep it up to date.  If you setup the incremental to basically always keep the clone to just a true single snapshot in time of what your boot drive has on it, then the clone will never take up more space than your boot drive.  A cloned drive is itself a bootable complete copy of your entire current internal boot drive and system.  The downside of such a clone is that it only includes copies of everything from the most recent incremental cloning operation, so you cannot go back in time to multiple previous versions of a file as you can in TM.
In an ideal world, you could get a bigger drive and start using it for TM, and also use your existing drive for a clone.  Redundant backups are an asset (I keep 3 on hand at all times - a TM, and two clones).

  • I got a new phone and it won't back up anything on to my icloud because it says there isn't enough storage space, can I delete old back ups?

I am not good with technology at all. I upgraded my 3GS to a 4S and now it won't back up to my iCloud. it keeps telling me that the icloud is full and I don't have enough room to back it up.I was wondering if there is away to delete the old back ups in order to free up space?

If you no longer need the backups, you can delete them by going to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of device you want to delete the backup for (under Backups at the top), then tap Delete Backup.  This will permanently delete it from your account, freeing up the storage it occupies.
