Have you tried to completely sign out of iCloud and then adding it back again? By the way, a software update to the latest version of OSX could also help to fix it (think about it, because Mavericks is a free upgrade).

If you have iPhoto '09, you cannot browse or restore seleted items from your backups. See the pink box in #15 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
Mail should work, however, per the blue box there.

Mail cannot access the mail server, but other email clients do.

My web host recently had extended problems with the mail server my sites are on. Now, Mail on my iMac Intel 27 Duo says it cannot access the server. However, Thunderbird and Entourage Mac have no problem. Sending from Mac Mail seems to be Ok as well. I've checked the settings over and over. I received no system disk for this machine when I bought it. Do I need to reinstall Mail, and if so, how?

Well if TB and Entourage can both send and receive but Mail can only send I can only conclude you missed something in you rechecking. Of course with you being the only one checking you are going to make the same "mistake" and never no it. So post the relevant POP server info for your ISP (edit out personal info and passwords of course):
Account Info:
Incoming Mail server: pop server address
User Name:             required user name POP server is looking for (censor)
Password:              password required by POP server (censor)
Advanced:
Port:      995, 25, default?
Use SSL:   yes or no
Auth:      kind of authentication

Your Apple ID still exists with the most recent password that you used. You can use it to erase your iPad. Read this.

Restart the computer.

I can access AOL email and can move from New Mail to Old Mail, but I cannot open the mail

I can see the topic and the sender, but when I click on the message, it will not open, whether in new, old or saved mail.

The password for use in the Mail application would be the same password you use when accessing Gmail by using an internet browser. The exception to that would be if you have 2-step verification enabled for Gmail. If that is the case then you would need to use an "application-specific password." Having the same problem. Click mail, it bounces, a quick flash, then nothing. Also as a side note, Entourage as of this morning will no longer send mail to either of my work accounts, that is why I was trying mail. Also tried several other mail programs and the same result, can receive mails, but not send.
Have reset the router, cable modem, checked that I have the latest MS and Apple software loaded and it is all good. Very strange.

Eureka. You are right. I just tested closing and reopening Mail and now today's groups work. Regarding editing the existing groups, I found an article from 2011 on CNet that claimed that iCloud disables the Distribution List Editor. The work around is to create a single dummy group under "On My Mac" which will reactivate the editor which can then be used for iCloud groups. I tested this and it works.

"iCloud Control Panel 2.1 and later includes support for Windows 8"
but you still need to set it up on a Mac or iOS device, "Note: To create an iCloud account you need an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later, or a Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later."

Imap: google, hotmail, and more including icloud.
If you want to use multiple devices - move to imap, I would even say "exchange", but Google does not support free exchange anymore, since January of that year. So Ironically Icloud or Hotmail would be my choices right now.
