HT4878 Can the available space statistic in Finder be corrected to reflect the "true" available space, as shown in Disk Utility?

Would appreciate a solution, as this discrepancy is uncomfortable ans doesn't sound like something terryibly difficult to solve.

Since the Local Snapshots are "expendable" -- they'll be deleted automatically if your disk gets over 80% full -- the difference really isn't a problem (once you know what it is!).
Thus, for most purposes, the "true" available space on Finder is actually more acccurate than Disk Utility.
To see what's really going on, use the "Storage" display, as it breaks the Local Snapshots out separately (but labels them "Backups").

What is the capacity of the flash drive?
You might also be able to reinstall Lion without a flash drive, by booting up the computer holding the Command + R keys, and choosing Reinstall OS X.

  • Disk Space as shown by Disk Utility doesn't add up

Somebody please explain the following to me and tell me what can be done.
My Mac's shooting up warnings, telling me to free up space. Please help me. I have tried to repair the disk; but it is in proper order according to DU.

Did you try to repair the disk when in Recovery mode, or when the disk was mounted?
If you're running Lion (10.7.5, as your profile shows) boot into your Recovery partition by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. Use Disk Utility from Recovery to verify and, if needed, repair the disk (if you haven't done so already).
Obviously there's something wrong with the directory information.

Sounds like you may have a harddrive issue.  You are probably going to need to get that changed out and then install the OS X again to get it going.

  • Under Macintosh HD info I have 240.3GB available, but under bootcamp and disk utility I only have 70gb available?

I went to make a bootcamp partition under the impression i had 240.3gb of available hard drive space when infact I only have 70gb available according to bootcamp and disk utility. What's causing this? Which is right?

I have fixed this issue. Time Machine mobile backups, backups stores locally when the backup drive ins't available, was causing the conflicting readings. I have disables mobiles backups with a sudo command and the .mobilebackups folder has deletes (the folder was 146gb!!).
This is perhaps a mountain lion bug because my backups are all up to date but the local backup didn't delete itself?

I cant find the options to erase selected items it only shows that i can erase everything.

If you are trying to delete some files get out of Disk Utility, it is not for that!
How did you backup and what are you trying to achieve?
Please post the exact error messages(s) you have received.

  • Wiping free space on Lion using Disk Utility Erase Free Space

    I'm using Lion (OS X 10.7.3) on a late 2011 MacBook Pro.
    FileVault is active.
I tried to erase free space on my HD using Disk Utility. It started by creating a temporary file and presented me with an indeterminate indicator-bar (one that looks like a barber pole). Activity Monitor showed an average CPU utilization of 2% by Disk Utility but disk activity was normal and usage stayed constant.
I left this process on for about twelve hours but Activity Monitor showed nothing new and the DU indicator-bar stayed indeterminate with Creating Temporary File.
I tried to skip this DU process and was presented with another indeterminate bar: Skipping. Again, AM showed nothing new so I force-quit DU and used sudo find / -type f -size +500M to see if any temporary files were created. I did not find any new files.
I rebooted and tried it from the terminal: sudo diskutil secureErase freespace 1 /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD. The result was the same: No progress.
BTW, if you run the above command, make sure you include the freespace portion. If you don't, diskutil will happily start securely erasing the entire disk.
Not being able to wipe free space using DU may have something to do with FileVault being active. Can someone confirm this?
What I love about working on a Mac is I have a Unix-based computer that I can tinker with. So I was able to wipe free space manually: dd if=/dev/urandom of=~/DELETEME followed by srm -s ~/DELETEME.
    Hope this helps someone.

Why we don't mention such terminal commands around here.

  • Change the partition of an external drive using Disk Utility?

I wish to change partition scheme, sizes, in an external drive. All the partitions are MacOS extended (Journaled) and they map, according to the layout in Disk Utility, as follows: Partion 1, 2, 3,4 where 1 is at the top and 4, the bottom. I want to make partition 2 larger, so I decreased partition 1 by half. Now the layout is 1 a, 1b, 2,3,4., where 1b is now free space. Disk Utility will not allow me to increase the size of  partition 2 by dragging the corner. Which of the following options (if any) will allow me to increase the size of partition 2, without erasing the data, using Disk Utility:
Select partition 2 and manually writing a new value in the size box, equal to the present partition’s size plus the free space?
If I delete partition 1 completely, will I then be able to increase the size of partition 2?
If I delete partitions 1, 3, and 4, will I then be allowed to increase the size of partion 2?
    Is there another option?
    Thanks
(Actually, partition 3 is an eDrive, a data recovery utility created by TechTool Pro 7, so I don’t really know how it’s formatted.)
OS10.9.4, MacBook Pro, SeagateHD 1.5TB USB drive.

You cannot re-size the existing partitions in such a way that you can take the space from a shrunken partition and add it to another partition. Disk Utility cannot do that. If you have an existing partition that lives above another partition, then you can delete the lower partition in order to expand the upper partition into the freed up space. This concept applies to any additional partitions that are below another partition. Disk Utility can do this. You can resize down, but not up, except when creating new partitions. You would need third-party software such as iPartition 3.4.3 to accomplish that feat.

  • Did anyone else lose the ability to see recovery drive in Disk Utility after 107.1?

After I updated to Lion 10.7.1 I can no longer see my Recovery Drive in Disk Utility. Did 10.7.1 take that away ?
    Just cusious.

    Retired Engineer wrote:

I do remember seeing it. I guess they removed its visability.

  • Why don't I see the log when I repair permissions with Disk Utility

I'm having issues with Safari hanging or bogging down to a snail's pace lately. I have tried several times to repair permissions with Disk Utility. It runs for several minutes, but shows nothing in the log even though the box is checked to show details. I've never seen this before. I don't know if Disk Utility is doing it's job or not....
    Any thoughts?

If the progress bar goes to the end, then you don't have any permissions needing repair. The fact that Safari is slowing down has nothing really to do with permissions.

  • Is there a way i can restore my mac to a previous date without having previously backed it up using time machine or disk utility?

So over the past few days out of nowhere my macbook pro has started behaving very erratically, i have yet had time to properly set up time machine on an alternate device and i was wondering if it was possible to restore my system to a few days ago? i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the most problematic programs but they still crash on open. My largest issue has been firefox which deleted all of my bookmarks and would not show a url in the navigation bar.  as well as neither my trackpad or usb mouse would allow me to left-click until after i had restarted my laptop 3 times.  Anyone have any ideas?

OS X doesn't have a "system restore" like Windows has.
You have to use TimeMachine or a external clone previously made.
My largest issue has been firefox which deleted all of my bookmarks and would not show a url in the navigation bar.
Uninstall all your add-ons, remove Firefox for now and use Safari
Use a external drive to make a copy of your user files only (not Timemachine) and disconnect all drives.
If you've installed crapware like MacKeeper you need to uninstall it here
    http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
If you've installed a always on anti-virus you need to uninstall it using the devlepers uninstaller
as well as neither my trackpad or usb mouse would allow me to left-click until after i had restarted my laptop 3 times.
Stick in your 10.6 install disk and reboot holding the c key down, boot off the disk and simply reinstall 10.6
reboot holding the Shift key down, then Apple menu > Software update to 10.6.8
reboot and try running all your third party software, a few may not work and have to be reinstalled as they insert kext files into OS X which you just replaced.
check the status of your plugins like Flash and Silverlight here, update if needed
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
Now go to System Preferences and create another new user and log into it, does things seem fine?
Now log into your original user, does it seem fine?
Now install Firefox by itself, does it seem fine?
Add add-ons one at a time in FF, does everything seem fine?
Try FF in the new user, everything seem fine?
It should be, you've just replaced your OS X, bundled programs and replaced Firefox.
If something still is occuring but only in that first user then you need to transfer personal files to the new user and delete the old one it's corrupted. You can re-create the first user again and transfer files back so things work again (itunes playlists etc.)
Next time make a TimeMachine drive or a Carbon Copy Cloner which is bootable and updates on your scheduale.

  • How can I make space in my full HD finding the FATTY folders?

    Hi everybody...
I have my 80G HD almost full, only 1.1G free. This happened suddenly without me doing nothing. I know I have to have at least 25% free. So I started checking my folders to choose which delete. The biggest one is iTunes with 3.5G.
I REALLY need help with this and will appreciate it a lot. I'm not a tech soul.
So, how can I delete 20G? Is there a software, Utilities that can help me with the task?
I do have an external 250G HD but it's pretty full too. I keep my movies there.
I emptied Safari's Cache too to no significant change.
Needless to say my laptop is EXTREMELY slow now, taking ages to open.
I mostly use daily: Safari, iTunes, Final Draft, Word.
It also gets VERY HOT almost immediately after opening it with both fans running. Usually it's Safari the culprit, taking like 80% of the CPU when opened.
I used Disk Utility to repair the HD.
I know this Power PC is old but right now I can't buy a new Intel replacement.
Thank you for any advice/directions on solving it.
    Cheers.
    Charles

    Hello Charly,
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...
    http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/download/
Also, open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if you have repeating messages making humongous log files.
I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • How can I erase My hard drive. Disk utility only gives me the option of erase free space. I have 27in iMac with Lion and 12 gb ram.

How can I erase my hard drive? Disk utility only gives me the option to erase free space.
    Thanks for any assistance.

    Drive Preparation for Lion
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU to return to the main menu.
    5. Select Reinstall Lion then click on the Continue button. You need an active network connection in order to download the Lion software.
