HT4889 Will I need the original registration numbers for programs like Pro Tools to run migration assistant?
I am getting a new iMac and will be using Migration Assistant to transfer files from the old iMac to the new iMac. Will I need registration numbers to run programs like Pro Tools after I tsfr the files? Big problem since I've lost the disks and the reg numbers. What about programs I've downloaded from the net like Quicken. Will these files open and run. Are there a lot of problems in setting up a new machine this way? I would like to start with a clean machine and reload all software but things like pictures and music files are stored all over as I was going through the process of learning how macs store files after being on PC's for years. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

When you first start the new iMac, you will get Setup Assistant, which is more reliable than Migration Assistant based on what others have experienced. If everything transfers okay, hopefully the applications should work fine.

The Apple Genius' were stumped by my laptop issues and said they'd never seen anything like it before and recommended I did a clean install. Below you can see my trash bin, and if you look at the "Empty" button it reads "N201" and then there's the "N39" to the left of it. You can also see these numbers over by the folder area--"SD5, SD6, SD7." But that's not all...
When I right click on items I see the numbers again. Instead of "Open with" I get "N152" and there's an "N35" and "LB1" towards the bottom.
I have no idea what's going on so I'm just going to do a clean install on my machine but I don't want to lose my apps. I don't have the original install DVDs for them anymore. Hello everybody. I am trying to reinstall my Quicktime 7 Pro after having my MacBook OSX 10.5.8 cleaned out following a hacking. I have Quicktime player and I reregistered with the purchased registration code for Quicktime 7 pro. It seems to be successfully registered with "Quicktime 7 Pro" appearing under the inserted registration code but it is not showing in Applications folder and I do not know how to access it or what to do. Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating

If you can access the device: Tap Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings.
If you can't do that then you need to Restore it as New:
Locked Out, Forgot Lock or Restrictions Passcode, or Need to Restore Your Device: Several Alternative Solutions

2. iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen

6. iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
Forgotten Restrictions Passcode Help
You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.

Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
* If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:

Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information. -
Hi can anyone help? I have an Iphone 4 which I tried to download ios7 to, but it says on screen, connect to itunes, which I have tried, but it says I need the original cd? I dont recall receiving one, so does this mean the phone has to be reset, if so how?

Once you have restored your new phone from the backup of your old phone and ensured that everything is working correctly, you should first turn off "find my phone" on the old phone and then erase it, before you get rid of it. -

I'm running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard fine on my MacPro1,1, Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2.66 GHz Mac, but I need to install Lion 10.7.0 to run a program I need.How do I install OS 10.7 NOT 10.7.5, because I get this message when I try to install 10.7.5, which I've downloaded:"This update requires Mac OS X version 10.7." on a mac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, So i need to install the original 10.7.0 over the 10.6.8 i.e. where can I find the original install app for Lion OS 10.7.0? The original Lion 10.7. is not avaialable for purchase from the App store or anywhere, even C-Net . Where can I find it to purchase?
Also it seems I cannot install Mountain Lion over 10.6.8 as advertised. When I go to purchase I get this message: "We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer." I think my computer can handle it (specs above) Are there any workarounds to this?If you're getting a "This update requires Mac OS X version 10.7" message, than you have the updater and not the full installer. Go to your Purchases section of the Mac App Store and you should see the full version there. But it may be 10.7.5, though in my system is shows as being from 2011 which would appear to be the original version.
As to Mountain Lion, that's supported only on the Early 2008 Mac Pro or newer.
