HT4889 Will migration assistant restore previous settings to a new mac?

I had a hard drive crash which required replacement.  The tech shop reinstalled OS 10.6.8 for me and I want to use my Time Machine backup to restore all of my files, settings, bookmarks, etc.  I have used Migration Assistant and done a restore but nothing has changed, although I know files were transerred from the backup.  What am I doing wrong?

Migration Assistant will restore the user accounts that existed previously. Did it create a new account for the one on the old drive?
Are you trying to restore it back to 10.8?

They are the same version 10.5.8
But do they need to be the same version to work on any mac?

  • HT4889 Will migration assistant/setup assistant transfer applications like Photoshop, MS Office, etc.?

I'm going to be moving from one MacBook Pro to a newer one.  My current MBP has the MS Office suite installed, plus Photoshop and Lightroom.  Will setup assistant/migration assistant transfer those applications, or do I need to install them on the new machine myself?

It should, if there is nothing the matter with the hardware of the machine.   Backup your data as a clone just in case. It is always helpful to have more hard disk space in the destination than the origin.

  • Will migration assistant change the default display settings on my new Mac?

I just set up a new iMac and used Migration Assistant to load from my Time Machine. But now the display looks muted and not as bright. Would Migration Assistant change the default display settings on my new Mac?

Migration Assistant may not be the cause. But you should reset the NVRAM and see it that fixes the issue.
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
    Release the keys.

    Hello:
Will Migration Assistant application transfer my applications' settings and all my games' save file such as Spore and even ported games?
I doubt if anyone can answer your question.  With a new Mac, setup assistant opens the first time the system is turned on.  One can also use migration assistant.
I have used both for several years and have never "lost" any data.
If you want to move, have a good backup and then do it.

  • HT4889 I've already set up my new MacBook Pro, I want to migrate all my stuff from my old MacBook OS X 10.6.4. Will it wipe out the settings in the new computer?

I've already set up my new MacBook Pro, I want to migrate all my stuff from my old MacBook OS X 10.6.4. Will the migration wipe out the settings in the new computer?

Of course not. Migration Assistant will create a new user with the transferred files and settings, so your MacBook Pro won't get messed > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
You may want to merge both users > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472

  • I just recently got back from iraq and bought a iphone 4 like 4 months ago. I finally got my computer back and I hooked up my phone to the computer to sync and register my phone. I clicked on restore previous settings and now my phone has all my old stuf.

I just recently got back from Iraq like 4 months ago and I bought the new Iphone 4. I didnt have my computer with me because I was moving to a new duty station. I just got my computer yesterday and I hooked my iphone to the computer. Instead of hit set up as a new phone, I end up clicking on restore previous settings. Now all my new pictures, contact, videos, etc, are gone. I have my phone with old stuff from over a year ago. Is there a way for me to get my current stuff back. Did itunes save it somewhere and I dont know how to get it. Please help me out. Let me know if I can get it back or not.

If you restored your iPhone rather than synching it, you've lost all that data.

  • The message "restore previous settings" (or somethinglike that) comes up when mozilla is launched. Are there two programs running at the same time.

Frequently there are two mozilla programs launched when the icon is hit. Often the "restore previous settings" message is displayed. I also often loose my connection to the internet which I suspect is somehow connected to the dual mozilla problem. How can I eliminate this situation? Can I uninstall mozilla and then download it again via explorer?

  • Migration Assistant Problems iMac/Leopard to Brand New iMac/Lion

Ok, I have scoured the discussions over this issue, done permissions repair/verify on both systems, all software is updated, etc. I'm at a loss.
I just purchased a new iMac 27" quad core... all I want to do is transfer my files using migration assistant. I have read there are many who are having issues with this...I have been trying since thursday night! I've called apple twice, nothing they advise seems to be working. I am trying to transfer using eithernet, and while I have an firewire cord it's not the correct type (it works on my old 20" iMac - running 10.5.8), so right now that is what it is. It gets to the end, and the time starts creeping back up again... I was down to 10 mins and it went back up to 3 hours+ and this was after me attempting to do the migration for 12+ hrs overnight. I also have a macbook and I am encountering the SAME issues while it's transfering the applications folder/info. It was down to 9 mins and then climbed back up to 2hrs & 15mins... and still climbing. This attempt started over 3 hours ago. The macbook has way less applications installed so I am forseeing that this is not a good sign.
Aside from trying to manually reinstall EVERYTHING, (ARGH!!!) do I have ANY other options? (or what peice of equipment do I need to drop-kick? lol)
The nearest mac store is over an hour away...

Sorry to be grouchy but you ignored the best opportunity to migrate when you initially turned on your new Mac. When you start up a new Mac it starts Setup Assistant, one of the steps asks if you want migrate from another Mac. In your case you must have chosen no and are now using Migration Assistant. MA and SA are basically the same tool however MA will create a new user account whereas SA will not. As for the connection that is easily solved by getting the correct FireWire cable. You need one like this one from Amazon. You can find these at any computer store, Best Buy, Walmart, Radio Shack or of course Amazon.
My suggestion to you once you get the right cable is to start over. How you do that is by following the suggestions in Lion Setup Assistant tips, this is a helpful guide prepared by Pondini who is one of the more generous posters on this site. Begin where he talks about Second Chance......

  • Migration Assistant - Error Connecting to Network of sending MAC to new Mac

Migration Assistant - Error Connecting to Network of sending MAC to new Mac
So I doing the network Migration Assistant and its keeps giving me a ERROR connecting to Network of sending MAC to new MacBook Air... help...

The local path needs to be written as the "volumes".  It's the Windows equivalent of using a Network Drive letter.  If you have not set up the volume in the Mac Finder you will run into issues.  DW was originally intended to have all files locally on your computer with a different testing server and different web server.  The fact that you have the "d$" name suggests to me that these are Windows servers that are you connecting to.  This article should help you map a drive that reconnects ( http://osxdaily.com/2012/05/04/automatically-connect-to-network-drive-mac-os-x/  ).
As far as the remote, for this DW should be allowing a network address because it is never assumed that the testing server is local on the computer.  This may end up being a bug, but let's see if we can correct one problem at a time.

  • HT4796 Migration Assistant Issue - PC won't connect to Mac!!!

I have followed all instructions on conducting a migration and have been trying to do this for well over 3 hours. I have the migration assistant open on both computers and the Mac migration assistant displays the code that needs to correspond with what is displayed on my PC. Unfortunately, on the PC, it just continues to display the "waiting for Mac to connect" message forever and nothing happens. I am trying to move files from my old PC to my new Macbook Pro.
On my PC, the minute I plug in my ethernet cable it tries to connect and then it displays "limited or no connectivity". Its as though it is trying to connect to the internet, even though the wifi is up and functioning. I've clicked the "Repair" icon in the local area connection status and that tries to renew my IP address and ultimately fails to do that. I've tried creating other networks, rebooting, making my security ridiculously low allowing sharing of all files, etc.
    HELP!!!!

Connect via Ethernet. That's much faster and more reliable than WIFI.
If you still can't find the backups, try repairing them, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • How do I move my iMail accounts and settings to a new mac?

How do I move my iMail accounts and settings to a new mac when both machines are running Mountain Lion?
On the destination Mac, I have two mail accounts that I want to keep, so essentially I will be adding another 4 accounts (from source mac) to the exting 2 accounts (on destination mac).  How can this be done?

If the request above is too difficult (no replies??), then can someone help me with moving my mail & settings between the two Mountain Lion machines (the 3 mail accounts from the source machine to be moved to the new mac - the 2 mail accounts on the new Mac can be trashed if required - simple move from one machine to another)?  Is that easier??
