I was just trying to sync my mac book pro calendar with icloud and most calendar info on the mac disappeared. I have two icloud accounts: original mobileme and new icloud. I think I may have changed a particular setting wrong. Need my calendars back right away!!
Background - Kept my mobileme account after the full switch to icloud because I wanted to wait until the bugs were out of mountain lion. Finally got mountain lion and switched over, but my cals never quite synced (nor did a few other things). I've never been able to see my mac book calendars fully on icloud or my iphone.

Mobile Me closed a year ago, you may have kept using it (bad idea) but all data that was on it is now gone.

Well in short, there are two ways to solve this:
A) clean up your harddisk
B) buy a bigger harddisk and replace the internal with it
Details:
A) clean up your harddisk:
Empty trash can, delete unused apps (with a tool like AppDelete), Get rid of old data (by using a tool like WhatSize to identify the biggest space suckers) and/or delete unused videos, photos and music...
B) buy a bigger harddisk and replace the internal with it:
First put your new HD in an external enclosure and plug it into your MBP either over USB or Firewire. If not already formated for a Mac: use diskutility to format and partition it with GUID boot and a single or more partitions (volumes) just as you have it on your orginial HD just bigger in size... ;-)
Then you will need a tool like SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to clone your existing harddisk onto the new one (all volumes if you had more than one).
Once done try to boot from your new external HD by selecting the startvolume in system settings or by holding the "alt" (option) key while powering up, then select the external HD to boot and try it out.
If all works, power of all and open your MBP and swap the hardisks. See http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Unibody-Mid-2010-Hard-Drive-Repl acement/3030/1 on how to do it (that link is actually for a 15" MBP from mid 2010).
Boot normally an check if all is well
Place the original HD in the external enclosure and use it as an externel HD extension or as a partial backup disk (as it is smaller compared to your new HD)

Non bootable Mac Book Pro - What directories to salvage

My wife's 2012 13 in macbook pro stopped working after an update. I tried everything I found in the forums to reinstall the OS, repair the drive, and to get it working again all with no luck. As a last resort I ordered a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable and was able to get the HD to show up in Target disk mode. I copied the users directory and was able to save that to an external drive.
My question is if I want to rebuild this mac after we get it working again, what other directories do I need to salvage while I can?

All User-specific files (including System Settings) are in The Users directory.
The only other things NOT re-Installed with Mac OS X are any special Applications you installed, but you are better off installing those from their original sources than working hard to copy possibly damaged ones from a questionable drive.

Stolen last week. They have logged on and changed the user name. I haven't remotely wiped or locked it yet, because I want to be able to track it. Can they disable the tracking? Change all your passwords to things you accessed online such as email and bank accounts. They logged on and changed the username on what, the computer, your email, your bank account?
There is nothing you can do to find and retrieve the computer.

It's hardware coverage of factory defects to three years from the date of purchase of the machine + phone support.
You can buy it within the one year standard warranty, but it's still only three years max.
Doesn't cover software issues, data recovery, user damage, accidents or thefts. OS X may be reinstalled in the repair process but really doesn't count as fixing software issues.
It's sort of mandatory, as eventually one will upgrade OS X and a firmware update can brick a logicboard by exposing unknown flaws or drivers for video cards causing issues.
Never upgrade OS X without AppleCare in place as Apple has multiple points of potential failure on the logicboard, the parts are not more seperated like on PC's and thus cheaper to fix.
A new logicboard out of applecare is prohibitive, you'll be better off buying a new machine.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
