Black screen shown on startup. Need help with macbook pro 13inch

Hey maine edition,
Thanks for the question. The following article may provide a resolution to your issue:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
If your computer has power but doesn't display any video, it may have one or more of these similar symptoms when you press the power button:
- You may hear a startup chime.
- You may hear fan or drive noise.
- You may see a light from the Sleep LED (if your Mac has one).
- Pressing the Caps Lock key on the keyboard causes it to light.
If any of these display-related conditions occur, see Troubleshooting: My computer has no video instead. Otherwise, continue with this article.
Thanks,
Matt M.

  • Macbook Pro Black Screen (Yosemite 15" 2014)

Hey guys, I was just sitting down and opened up Skype and my macbook pro suddenly went black, just previously I had been watching stuff for a few hours on my macbook hooked up to my TV via HDMI cable. I thought to simply restart, I heard the sound chime but the screen remained black, I hooked my macbook back to the tv and everything shows up and works perfectly on the TV, i can adjust the backlit keyboard lighting, but as its through HDMI sound/brightness adjustment couldn't be done, without HDMI attempting this changes nothing, I have reset the PRAM & tried to enter safe mode which didnt seem to go into safe mode, instead staying as a black screen, i have now force shut down my laptop about 20 times with nothing working on the screen, the whole screen is black, no cursor or graphics visible, shining a light in the screen shows nothing, the apple logo behind is not lit. I have researched literally every available article on this matter that I could find but most relate somehow close to mine but with different issues such as cursor showing or external monitor not showing display, I am convinced this is something related to me pulling out the hdmi or confusing it somehow, this laptop is literally like 2 months old and I cant see how there could possibly be a hardware issue.
Thanks all for reading hope someone has an idea I haven't tried!
    Specs:
    Year: 2014
    GPU: Intel Iris Pro
    Memory: 16GB RAM
    OS: Yosemite
    Symptoms:
    Black Screen
    No Display on Macbook
    Keyboard and Keyboard lighting working
External Monitor fully working through HDMI
    Sound Chime and booting correctly

Just encountered this problem this morning. Here's the fix: (Relayed from another forum)
    1. Shut the computer down by holding the pwr button down for 10 sec.
    2. Restart the computer with a short push on the pwr button and press the shift key down at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving.
    3. Once you reach the point when your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password and hit Enter.
    4. After a moment you should see the spinning ball.
Apparently this is an issue with an uncompleted update, but instead of asking you for your details to complete the update the screen goes black, but the computer is still able to receive your inputs.

  • Macbook Pro black screen crashes

    Hello,
Lately my macpro (received it last august) has been crashing more and more frequently over the past couple of weeks. There is no pattern, I could be doing anything and it will just crash. Here are the symptoms.
    Screen will black out
    Fan is still on
If playing audio the sound freezes and loops
If webcamming the indicator light will stay on
Only way is to reset with power button
Does anyone have an idea on what I can do next to alleviate this problem? Thanks in advance as I appreciate your help.

    Hi there,
I bought my MacPro in Paris (MacBook Pro 15" 2.5 GHZ intel core i5) in May 2010. It has been crashing more and more frequently over this 3 months. There is no pattern, At beginning crashed only when I was watching or editing video, lately started to crash more often and even if I was surfing the web on safari. Even after reinstalling the whole system, same thing is happening.
    The symptoms are following:
    Screen will black out
    Fan is still on
If playing audio the sound freezes and loops
Only way is to reset with power button.
Does anyone knows is this Apple issue and can it be fixed and who will take charge?
    Thanks.

  • Early 2011 Macbook Pro - Black screen at random

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro, running Mac OS X (10.7.5). Seemingly at random, the screen will go black and the only way to get it back is to hold the power button down. When it turns back on, everything is running as normal. It's been happening more and more frequently, so I'm wondering is this a problem I can fix on my own? Can it be fixed or is it just a glitch I should just deal with?
(Please explain everything to me as if I were a 5-year-old)

    Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro.
Add me to the long list of customers experiencing display issues.  HUGE problems with a blank screen when waking from sleep and difficulty starting up (video glitches & hi fan speed).  After about 6 months and 2 genius bar visits I finally did a complete HD wipe/clean install of Mavericks with all of the default settings.
The situation has improved only slightly overall, but at first things were great.  I was confident I had it licked.
As I restored apps & profile settings things start to get wonky.  The last install I did was Picasa (I thought this app was the culprit before the wipe).  I successfully restored my Picasa settings and all was fine.  I even closed the lid and when I opened it the next day the screen came right back on.  Then I tried to sync my iPhone and BAM!  Screen goes out and the system is hung (no response to keystrokes or sound events).
    Power button shutdown.
Restarted and the Macbook hung as the previously opened apps reopened.
    Power button shutdown again.
Restart this time was normal and everything opened just fine.  The console logs show NOTHING indicate any issues or that the machine experienced a kernel panic or anything like that.
It's been 1 whopping 36 hours since my clean install and I've already crashed twice.
But now I use my Macbook with anxiety as I never know when it's going to crap out again.  Maybe it's time I switch back to Linux on an inexpensive wintel laptop as I won't buy another Apple laptop if this is the what I should expect from a $2000 machine.
Incidently, I also have a 2010 MB pro which had dispaly issues and Apple replaced the logic board at no cost (out of warranty) as part of a replacement program.   I've seen MANY forum posts suggesting that Apple should step up and provide the same level of service for the Early 2011 MB Pros...  I tend to agree.

  • Another Macbook Pro black screen GeForce 8600M question

    Hey everyone,
I know this has been discussed to death, but I have had trouble finding someone with my exact symptoms, so I thought I'd ask just in case anyone has any insight.
I have a 2007 Macbook Pro with the GeForce 8600m chip. The computer boots up and the gray Apple loading screen illuminates and loads. Then when the screen would normally switch to the desktop, it goes black. I can plug in an external display and the computer works fine. In the "About this mac" window, no internal display shows, just the external. Same with the Displays pane in System Preferences. I try to detect displays but to no avail, only the Cinema display shows up.
So the computer works fine, it just does not recognize the internal display - but I know the display itself works cause it shows the boot screen when I start it up.
I've tried all the PRAM resets and such.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

At this point, you have basically diagnosed the issues as far as you can by determining what does and doesn't happen on the external display. If you have your original system disks, one has Apple Hardware Test (AHT). That might pick up a failed inverter but I doubt it picks up a failed backlight or a broken cable.
I don't know if you can run AHT with an external monitor. The test boots from the DVD so you may not have extensions needed to fire up the external. You can try--just make sure your external is set to "mirrored mode," not "extended desktop," before restarting from the DVD and you have a chance of it working.
AHT will give you a cryptic code if something fails; post the code and I can try to translate.
If AHT doesn't further narrow the suspects, you'll need to have it looked at by a pro to get anywhere, unless you are comfortable taking apart something loaded with tiny and delicate electronic bits. If so, tell me your screen size and I can point you to some illustrated maintenance sites.

  • Macbook Pro - Black screen and external monitor

    Hi there,
I'm new here and it would be great if anybody could give me some advice about my Macbook Pro issue. First of all, I would like to thank all the contributors for your comments. I'll go to an Apple Store asap, but I'll really appreciate any of your comments so I'll know more about this issue and how to manage it.
    My device details are:
    Macbook Pro / 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 / 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 / Macintosh HD / Mac OS X 10.6.8
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
    Other connected equipment:
HP Monitor Pavilion 22xi (with an official Apple adapter - projector's plug)
Wacom tablet Bamboo Fun (USB connection)
I usually work with graphics software (Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.), since I bought my laptop (3-4 years ago) it has worked faultlessly. But I started to notice some problems about two weeks ago. The problem is basically always the same: After some hours of work, suddenly and randomly (it tends to happen when I click on a button) the screen turns off but the computer is still running (I can hear the fan and hard disk). As I said I use an external monitor, and it also turns off at the same time. That's why I thought it may not be a problem with the screen, it's probably related to the graphics card ?¿?
The troubleshooting steps that I've tried are:
After waiting several minutes and without any response, I have to restart my laptop. When it turns on a Panic Report message pops up. It says that a severe problem made me turn the laptop off suddenly (or something like that). The Panic Report says something about "kernel_task", I have no idea what it is, just in case it could help to clarify more (I've printed all these panic reports).
I also have to mention that this laptop gets really hot on the left side, which I reckon it's a very common thing in these devices. I have to use a desktop electric fan to provide relief to both of us
I've also disable the "Automatic graphics switching" tab in Energy Saver menu.
Despite all of this, the screen and the external monitor are still turning off.
    Any idea?
    Thanks a lot,
    Clara

I would suggest that you run AHT using Using Apple Hardware Test. You can either reboot the machine and press the D key, or use your second Grey disk. This would potentially show you any HW problems.
Typically these older machines exhibit GPU issues. There is a third-party application called gfxCardStatus, that can provide some insight as well.
This may or may not help if there are GPU issues - About NVRAM and PRAM (reset NVRAM/PRAM/SMC).
It is possible to enable remote access (via SSH) and even if the screen is not working, the machine can be accessed remotely. Please see System Preferences -> Sharing.
Can you run a test with both the lid of the MBP and the external monitor plugged in. Does your external monitor disconnect, but the internal one still show a screen?

  • (Mid-2009 MacBook Pro) Black screen on windows 7 disk boot up

Just tried to boot up from a windows 7 install disk, but I just got a black screen. Nothing else happened. Tried using an xp and vista disk also, but they both produced the same results. I've installed windows plenty of times from this computer before, but for some reason this time it decided not to work.
    Any suggestions?

The only other relevant Support document is this one: If your Mac won't turn on - Apple Support but if your Caps Lock LED illuminates when you press it then your Mac is not completely dead. Technically, it turns on, even though it appears to do nothing else. In that case Apple refers you to the following document: Troubleshooting: My computer has no video but I doubt it will help because you cannot even get your Mac to start.
You will need to obtain the System Install DVD as I wrote, so that you can start the Mac, load an operating system, and format the SSD so that OS X can be installed. You might need to remove the SSD and install a conventional hard disk drive instead, at least until you can get the Mac working to the point you can install an operating system.

I plugged it into my tv through the mini display port and I can see everything fine on the tv but the screen on my laptop is black. Everything else seems to be working fine. • When starting the macbook pro, the screen was flashing black and white, then to color to color, any suggestion to fixing this problem?

When i am starting the macbook pro, the screen was flashing black and white, and then to color to color, and the whole process repeat all over again, is there any suggestion in solving this, or is there no way to solve this and i need to bring it to the apple support?

Sounds as if you're having a problem with your GPU (graphics card). Only Apple can diagnose and fix this, so the best thing would be to take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP.

When I open my Macbook pro- the screen lights up and then goes black- keybook stays backlite- can not get screen to come back on. Must reboot-
thoughts-?? Macbook is 6 months old and on second hard drive ( failure after 45 days).

Hey! exact same thing happens to me... I use the keyboard shortcut to turn off the screen which is ctrl - shift - eject button. Then just poke a key and it wakes up again fine, it doesn't fix the problem but at elast you don't have to reboot. x

  • My screen on my MacBook Pro blacks out constantly. If I press on the bottom left side of the MacBook, I can keep the screen on. I have been placing a small note pad to keep pressure on the bottom in order to keep the screen lit up.

You should try taking the battery out and putting it back in, but then if that doesn't work, you should take it into your Apple Retail Store and have a genius at the Genius Bar take a look. That seems like a hardware problem to me.

Wow!  I think I had this same issue just last night.
I was cleaning my macbook pro retina on the outside.  Then I opened it up and was wiping dust off the monitor and I can't pinpoint exactly when, but the colors changed suddenly.  It looked super strange, it was like green halo's and it looked worse when looking at it at an angle.  Of course I took no pictures!!!  I was freaking out that my 2 grand laptop was busted and I somehow removed a protective film or something.
But I digress...  The image looked very green and spacey, it was almost a neat effect.  After about 5 minutes it started to look a little more digital though.  There were straight lines of this halo effect on the edges and top.  After about 10 minutes it turned into a predominate issue with the blacks on screen.  I could open a web browser and it was unnoticable on a white background.  After about 15 minutes, you could only barely see the green cloud effect if you looked at the monitor from an extreme angle.  After about 20 minutes, it was completely back to normal, I almost feel paranoid like I see a halo or something strange.  But I believe that might be all in my head now.
So yerp, lemme know what you guys figure out.

Doesn't sound like it.  It sounds like you're being logged-off.
Does your Mac go through the complete Restart cycle -- black screen, gray and/or blue screen momentarily, startup chime, etc?
If you're not sure, do a Restart just to watch the process; the next time the problem occurs, see if it's the same.
You need to know which it is, as these will have very different causes, and different places to look for a solution.
