HT4904 went to install the proper version of the firmware for the early 2011 macbook pro and it came up stating that it wouldn't work on my computer??? is this because like a fool I upgraded my macbook to Mavericks?
with mavericks installed does that mean I already have the ability of runing the recovery function from the internest or what do I need to do to get the latest firmware on my system. thanks for your time and asistance
All Macs running OS X Lion or newer have got Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 However, Mid 2010 and newer MacBooks Pro support Internet Recovery through a firmware update.
If you have got a Mid 2010 or newer MacBook Pro, you need to install a EFI update to install Internet Recovery, so open > Software Update, and install all updates. If you do not see any EFI update, you already have got Internet Recovery. You can start up in Internet Recovery by holding down Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting up.
If you have got an older MacBook Pro, you cannot use Internet Recovery, but you have got the Recovery partition to reinstall Mac OS X. To start up into OS X Recovery, hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting up.

I've been looking online for solutions. But am wondering if anybody has heard if Apple is going to take care of this, or what others are doing to get Apple to repair this problem without having to pay $1,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to work out if there is any way that I can use my late 2009 21.5 inch iMac (running OS X 10.6.8; mindisplay port) as an external or second monitor when connected to my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8; thunderbolt).
From what I've read online, I gather that I cannot simply connect the two with a minidisplay port to thunderbolt cable, as the iMac does not support target display mode. I know I can 'share screens', but this doesn't give me much of an improvement on size compared to just using my MacBook.
Are there any other potential work arounds I might have missed? Any suggestions (or even conclusive answers to suggest I'm wasting my time by continuing to think about it!) would be much appreciated.

Anybody else sharing in the Grey Screen of Death experience on the early 2011 MacBook Pros?
I got to the point where I needed to reboot my computer (running too many Remote Desktop Connections has a way of messing with my system somehow) and just like every other time I try to shut down or reboot my computer, it feels the cycle coming and throws up the lovely grey screen of death before I can actually get the computer to shut down cleanly. I'm actually starting to consider switching over to a Windows box, because there I expect the lovely blue screen of death.
When you go to "About This Mac," "More Info," and click on the "Memory" tab, how many GB's do you see in each socket? This is what mine looks like:
You might also want to run a utility such as rember to check your RAM.

My MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G are not working together, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III and in my MacBook Pro it does not work.
Now MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 built May onward do not have this problem it was fixed in the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. (So there is a problem). Cam I have my MacBook Pro fixed please.After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it. -
Early 2011 Macbook Pro - Black screen at random
I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro, running Mac OS X (10.7.5). Seemingly at random, the screen will go black and the only way to get it back is to hold the power button down. When it turns back on, everything is running as normal. It's been happening more and more frequently, so I'm wondering is this a problem I can fix on my own? Can it be fixed or is it just a glitch I should just deal with?

Add me to the long list of customers experiencing display issues. HUGE problems with a blank screen when waking from sleep and difficulty starting up (video glitches & hi fan speed). After about 6 months and 2 genius bar visits I finally did a complete HD wipe/clean install of Mavericks with all of the default settings.
The situation has improved only slightly overall, but at first things were great. I was confident I had it licked.
As I restored apps & profile settings things start to get wonky. The last install I did was Picasa (I thought this app was the culprit before the wipe). I successfully restored my Picasa settings and all was fine. I even closed the lid and when I opened it the next day the screen came right back on. Then I tried to sync my iPhone and BAM! Screen goes out and the system is hung (no response to keystrokes or sound events).
Power button shutdown.
Restarted and the Macbook hung as the previously opened apps reopened.
Power button shutdown again.
Restart this time was normal and everything opened just fine. The console logs show NOTHING indicate any issues or that the machine experienced a kernel panic or anything like that.
It's been 1 whopping 36 hours since my clean install and I've already crashed twice.
But now I use my Macbook with anxiety as I never know when it's going to crap out again. Maybe it's time I switch back to Linux on an inexpensive wintel laptop as I won't buy another Apple laptop if this is the what I should expect from a $2000 machine.
Incidently, I also have a 2010 MB pro which had dispaly issues and Apple replaced the logic board at no cost (out of warranty) as part of a replacement program. I've seen MANY forum posts suggesting that Apple should step up and provide the same level of service for the Early 2011 MB Pros... I tend to agree. -
Problems with early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" 2.7 GHz / OWC Mercury Extreme Pro
*Has anyone else experienced issues getting their OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD working in the early 2011 MacBook Pros?*
I am having difficulties getting OS X installed on the new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 240 GB. When I install the SSD in place of the factory HDD and boot from the 10.6.6 reinstallation DVD the SSD is not visible to the installation program. If I quit the 10.6.6 installer and run Disk Utility (from the 10.6.6 installation DVD) the SSD is not visible. If I quit Disk Utility and run System Profiler (from the 10.6.6. installation DVD) the drive is visible and firmware and serial numbers are displayed. So like the drive is visible to OS X but the installer / Disk Utility can not see it.
If I put the SSD in an external USB enclosure it is visible - I can format the drive and copy files to it.
I also tried installing the SSD in place of the factory HDD, putting the HDD in a USB enclosure, booting from the OS X installation on the HDD and running the OS X installer from the 10.6.6 DVD. I was able to select the SSD as the target for the installation and the initial file copy was OK, but when the laptop restarted during the installation the SSD would not boot. The grey folder icon with the flashing question mark was displayed instead. Holding down Option while booting only gave me the option to boot from the DVD.
I also tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC of the MacBook Pro - this did not resolve the issue.
I spoke to OWC support who said they did not know of any compatibility issues with the new MacBook Pros and suggested I request a replacement.
The firmware version of the SSD is 350a13f0This is my exact problem. I have had 2 of these drives so far and both of them have had the same problem with installation internally. The first one I was able to get operational using the method you described, ie: put the OWC SSD in an external case (FW800 was my choice) and install it there. But I encountered the sleep issues, so I sent it back for a replacement.
The second drive I was finally able to install using the second method, but now the computer regularly locks up. So I'm going to call again and hopefully the third try will work.
Just to clarify. The first drive had sleep issues, but had the older firmware. The second drive had the newer firmware (360 I think it is) and didn't have the sleep issues, but locks up while running.
I'm so irritated on how many hours I've spent on this issue. And their support department, though very nice, wasn't helpful at all. It's as if they never heard of this problem. -

I'm planning on putting in a new hard-drive (SSD) after a little scare with my factory hard-drive and the mounting bracket coming loose.
The plan was to open it up, install the hard drive, restart with Command-R held down, enter OS X Recovery, and finally restore from my Time Machine back-up.
However... I've heard that my model may not have the ability to enter OS X Recovery without a DVD that was shipped with the hardware. First, is this true? When I had issues with the current hard drive, I was able to use Command-R to enter OS X Recovery. It even appeared to have me connect to the internet and looked like it downloaded the application. Does that indicate that I should be able to do that again? Or did that get pulled from the hard-drive somehow? Second, if I need a disk - I did NOT get a disk from Apple when I purchased my device from the store. I do NOT throw things away (I have all the little inserts and everything still in the box, even the receipt). I receive a massage that a new version of ITunes was available (11.1.4). I proceeded to update, the download went ok but when installing the Message “Service ’Apple Mobile Device’ failed to start, verify that you have sufficient Privileges to start system Services”
On pressing retry I got the same message.
On pressing Ignore, I got the message “ITunes was not installed correctly, please reinstall ITunes – Error 7 – (windows error 126)
I reinstalled with the same error messages and the same results.
I uninstalled existing and reinstalled from scratch and the same error messages again.
I try to repair and at the end it said it had installed correctly – but when it tried to start I got the message “This application has failed to start because MSVCR80.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem” I now get the same message when I first start the computer but when I press ok I receive ““ITunes was not installed correctly; please reinstall ITunes – Error 7 – (windows error 126)” again.
It appears the update has not only corrupted the operating system (Xp Pro SP3) of my computer but I have no backups to my IPhone, my wife’s IPhone or the three others phones that use my computer.

I have downloaded and installed the latest version of numbers on my mac. Everytime I save and then try to reopen that document, I receive a message telling me that I need a new version of numbers. Also, when I try to sort the date column, it sorts out of order. The last version sorted fine.

When you install the new iWork version, the old iWork version is kept, so it looks like you are opening your old version.
To fix this, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and drag the new Numbers version to the Dock, so you can access to it quickly. Open all documents from this version. I don't recommend you to delete the old Numbers version in case you need it.
