HT4906 Can I back up my iPhoto library to the cloud?

Is it possible and / or wise to back up my photos to my iCloud account? They are saved to my time Machine, however I would like to have access to them from my other computers, and to have an additional back-up. Thanks

That's not a feature of iCloud.
You can upload your photos to any sharing site and that will allow you to access them from any computer and function as a back up. I use SmugMug for just that reason.
As to uploadng your Library to another cloud service - people have tried running a Library from the cloud and found it prone to corruption (as the servers are not appropriately formatted) and very, very, very slow. If you do upload to a cloud service remember to factor in the time to download again. iPhoto Libraries can be very very large and those kinds of data tranfers can take days to complete.

No, unfortunately you cannot do that. At the moment iCloud does only backup hotos of your camera roll. Please make a local backup of your pictures using a Mac/PC or any other cloud storage service like Dropbox.

backup all your data to an external hard drive.  If your mac's hard drive crashes, anything not backed up to an external hard drive will most likely be lost.

Probably not - but that certainly does not involve iPhoto for the Mac - you need to look at Crashplan support for you options
And iCloud is not a place to store photos so that is certainly not a possibility
If you restore your masters folder out of the iPhoto library you will have all of your original photos to do with what you please

  • What is the best option for storing my iphoto library on the cloud?

I was curious as to what people are doing (other than backing up to external HD) for backing up the iphoto library?  Anyone using any cloud solution out there for storage?  What are some of the best options?  I have around 30,000 photos in my iphoto library.

There is no good solution for storing the Library in the Cloud. The amount of data involved means that uploading or downloading is very, very slow. We do see posts on here from people trying to restore from a back up to the Cloud wondering if it's possible to speed up the download currently estimated in days. Running a Library from the cloud is just painfully slow - people have tried it and that is the consensus.
However, as part of a comprehensive back up plan there is a lot to be said for backing up your Photos to the cloud. Not as good as backing up the whole Library, but as a "last line" you at least have your photos. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.

  • How can I back up an IPhoto library from one external hard drive to another?

Hey Folks, WIth your help I have consolidated my IPhoto libraries using IPhoto Library Manager. I'm storing it on an external hard drive because I have run out of space on my Macbook Pro. Now I'd like to back it up. I have another large external hard drive that is set to perform Time Machine backups on my Macbook. Is there a way to ALSO use it to perform occasional backups of my IPhoto library which, as I mentioned, is not kept on the Macbook itself?  Thanks in advance, David

I do not understand your question
The basic answer is that TM backes up everything that is not excluded - it backsup to the TM backup - it can not backup any files that are on the TM backup volume - only those on other volumes
To remove an item form the excluded list select the item and click the "-" button
See te FAQs for many more details - http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

  • Can I add an old Iphoto library to the current one or just open one at a time

Is there any way to add an old iphoto library from a disc back into the current library?  Or do I have to just switch them back and forth?

You can merge libraries using the pais version of iPhoto Library Manager
iPhoto it's self can only use one libeary at a time

  • Backing up MS word documents and iphoto library to the cloud

I use Microsoft Word to type my documents and I use iphoto for my photos. I want to use the cloud to back up my documents and photos. Can I do this by using icloud?

  • How can I create a separate iphoto library on the same computer (imac)

My present iphoto site has about 2000 pix on it. Now I want to create a separate iphoto site on my imac with separate pix and access. How do I do this?
    Thanks,

Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and click on the Create New...  button.
To change libraries just launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and double click on the library in the window you want to use .

  • Run iphoto library from the cloud

    Hi,
I've been checking lots of forums regarding this topic. And it looks like there is not such a solution at the moment.
I would like to run iphoto from the cloud (any cloud solution).
I'm not talking about doing backup, but really running from the cloud.
I can't believe there is not such a solution today. I'm of course ready to pay for it.
But it looks like there is not even a "pay" solution for this workflow.
Any idea why ? Or any solution I could have missed ?
    @Apple, any upcoming solution?
I'm really surprised by all this, considering that everyting is going in the cloud nowadays.
Thanks in advance for your response.
    Regards,
    Thomas

I would like to run iphoto from the cloud (any cloud solution).
I'm not talking about doing backup, but really running from the cloud.
Neither running from the Cloud or backing up to the Cloud are viable options at this time.
iPhoto maybe "incredibly old fashioned" but so are all the other applications that function as photo managers with non-destructuve processing. None - and I mean none - of the current Photo Managers - iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, Picasa et al. - offer this as a feature. And remember Lightroom costs ten times what iPhoto costs. That might tell you something.
While "everything is going in the cloud nowadays" seems to be what's going on, in actual fact, very little is going there. A lot of text goes there - tiny files - but no big data editing - so, no you don't edit music in the Cloud, no editing Video in the Cloud and so on.
For me it says that the capability of the network isn't there yet, either to deal with the data transfers and certainly not in terms of speed.
No one here knows what - if any - plans Apple have.
iPhoto Menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback for feature requests.
The terminology is different but you can do the organisation use in iPhoto for iOS in iPhoto for Mac and a whole lot more.

  • Can you store your complete music library in the Cloud

I have a Bose Soundlink II Bluetooth speaker and want to be able my music complete library, using Bluetooth, which is c90GB.
The best option would be to go for a 64GB iPod Touch but that leaves me short by some 30GB.
Is there a way, by say using the Cloud, I can access my Music library in its entirity?
I'm sure that there must be storgae limitations.
    Thanks

You might look into these options, unless all your music is purchased from the iTunes Store, the first option is likely favourite, I'd estimate that 90 GB is likely less than 25,000 tunes.

  • How can I move my old iPhoto library into a Referenced Library format and use that as my default?

Hi, I have been using iPhoto for photo management where all the jpegs have been living, in organized events by date and subject for some time. I recently upgraded to aperture and am using the same iPhoto library. The issue I have is that I use Carbonite for my cloud back up and I am able to look at the pictures I have on my PC with the same folder organization I have them on my PC hard drive. This is apparently not possible for iPhoto library. The only way to access a picture on the iPhoto library in the cloud is to go through the master and hope you can find the specific picture since they are not organized in a comprehensible manner (like events or folders) in there.
So the only solution I can think of is to move the current iPhoto library to a referenced image library and use that as my default library from now on. This way I get cloud access and the events will hopefully turn into folders with dates and subjects that I can continue to keep organized to satisfy my OCD tendencies.
So the question I have is that:
    1. How can I make a reference Library for Aperture/iPhoto?
    2. How do I move the current library to the Referenced Library in an Organized manner? My wish list would be a series of folders labeled with the date and the subject, like I have in my iPhoto library right now.
    3. If there is any alternative, your suggestions and recommendations would be much appreciated.
My computer: Mac Mini (Mid 2012), Lion, 16GB RAM.
    Thank you kindly,

Or is there a way to go through aperture to make a new reference library that I can move the masters into later?
you do not move the masters into a references library - you turn your current library into a referenced library.  As Terence Devlin said:
    File -> Relocate Masters
    What you should set up:
Select a folder, where you want to store your referenced files - probably on an external drive.
Decide on a hierarchical folder structure inside this folder - that is completely up to you.
Select a project from your library and use the command "File -> Relocate Masters/Originals" to move the original image files to the folder where you want to go them to. Only take care not to send two projects to the same folder.
Alternatively, if you do not care about the folder structure Aperture will use, select all images at once from the "Photos" view and let Aperture decide how to assing the folders - in the "Relocate Originals" dialoge you can specify a subfolder format.
