HT4906 iPhoto & iCloud

I paid for an updated version of iPhoto, iPhoto 11.  I did this because I think I need it for iCloud.   I don't have anything about photo stream on my current iPhoto version.
This all started with the purchase of a new iphone 5.  At the store my photos were uploaded to icloud.  I have never used icloud.  But I am attempting to retreive this photos from icloud.
When I try to find the app, my laptop tells me it was download & it won't download it again.  I can't seem to install new version of iPhoto.  None of this may make sense.
All I want to do is (1) open or find icloud to see if my photos are still there.  (2) get the application that I paid for installed.
Thanks if any one can help.

Look in your Applications Folder. What version of iPhoto is there?
Remember that iPhoto 11 is version 9 of iPhoto.
You set up Photostream and iCloud in the SystemPreferences -> iCloud

  • IPhoto, iCloud Photos, QTKitServer-iPhoto and QTKitServer-Aperture all hanging

iMac mid-2011, 8 GB RAM, 1TB Internal Hard Drive, Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9, iPhoto 5, Aperture 3.5
My iPhoto library, iCloud photos and some Mac OS X Mavericks file called QTKitServer-iPhoto and QTKitServer-Aperture keep hanging and not responding. Tried repairing permissions and repairing iPhoto library multiple times. Tried re-downloading Mavericks and that did not fix it. Called Apple Support. They said they could not help me beyond what I had already tried (Apple Online Support has really gone downhill since the last time I called) and to go to my local Apple retail store to see a Genius.
After running hardware tests, the Genius told me that my iPhoto library was too large and that was what was causing iPhoto and iCloud photos to hang. Even though he acknowledged that the QTKitServer operating system file is not supposed to hang. The Genius put in an additional 8 Mb memory to see if adding more memory would help (apparantly iPhoto is supposed to give back some memory when you close it and it does not). So Apple is not flushing memory when an App is closed. Apple's apparent solution is to add more memory that you have to purchase. However, the same three files kept not responding even with the additional memory. So I passed on the additional memory until I get the iPhoto problem solved. He also said my external hard drive, a WD 2TB hard drive that I bought from the same Apple retail store two or three years ago, looked like it was failing because there were lots of disk I/O errors in the system log, even though the drive appears to work fine and disk utility reported no problems when I ran Verify Disk on the external WD drive two days ago. I do not use this drive hardly at all (I backup my iMac to my Time Capsule), exept to keep a backup copy of my iPhoto library and Documents folder, and it has lots of original pictures that are not in my existing iPhoto library. I copied my iPhoto library and Documents folder to it last night and they seemed to copy fine.
So if my iPhoto library is really too big, and that is what the issue is, my problem is that there is no apparent way to break up my existing iPhoto Library into multiple small iPhoto libraries, without losing all of my keywords, titles, photo edits, event names, album names, folders and projects etc. The last time I tried breaking up my iPhoto library into smaller iPhoto libraries, even though I told iPhoto to export  keywords and titles, it did not. And the Genius did not know if it would work now or not.
My question is to those of you who have large iPhoto libraries and are using Mac OS X Mavericks and iCloud Photos - how big are your iPhoto libraries? What is too big? Does anyone have an iPhoto library the size of mine that is working fine (who is also using Mac OS X Mavericks and iCloud)? When I talked to Apple online support, they said big iPhoto libraries are 100,000 photos and up. The Genius said anything over 1,000 is big. That's quite a spread. Currently I have 24,000 photos, most of which have been edited in some way or another, and about 1/2 of which have new titles, mulitple keywords assigned, faces and places assigned, etc., since I imported the original master photos. The Genius told me to duplicate my existing iPhoto library, create a new iPhoto library, import all of the folders in the iPhoto database except the Masters folder, and see if iPhoto still hung. If it did, he said it was all the data attached to the photos that is the problem, in which case I would need to create another new iPhoto library and import only the Masters file (images only). I think if I import only the Masters from my existing library, I will lose not only all of my keywords and titles, but also all of my photo edits, event names, album names, folder names, projects etc.
So I wasted an entire afternoon at the Apple retail store, only to buy a new external hard drive (that I may not even need), was told to buy more memory (that did not solve the problem - I passed on that), and I am no further ahead than I was when I went in. I need to know if there is any way that I can break up my iPhoto library into smaller libraries and retain all of the metadata and photo edits?
Finally, when I got home, I discovered that my husband with whom I had shared some of my photo streams, still had photos showing in shared photo streams that I had removed from iCloud two days ago. It removed them on my iMac - the place where those streams originated, but apparently left the thumbnails in the shared photo streams of everyone that I had shared the photos with. As soon as I clicked on an actual photo on my husband's iMac, the photo suddenly vanished and all the photo thumbnails in the stream did too. But the empty shared photo stream still remained on my husband's iMac and he had to physically say "Unsubscribe" to get it to go away. So something is not working right with iCloud photos, which is no doubt why iCloud photos is one of the files that keeps not responding.
Then, when I set up my iMac again this evening, and looked at iCloud on my iMac, all of my photo streams (not just the four that I had removed two days ago) were gone! And when I went into Aperture, the photo streams were all there, but with zero photos in them. Now last night when I boxed up my iMac to take to Apple, those photo streams were all there and they all had photos in them. So where did they go? And why, when you are the originator of a photo stream, and you tell iCloud to remove the photo stream, it says that it does but it leaves remnants of it with the other people you have shared it with? It seems to me that iPhoto, iCloud, and the fact that Apple is not flushing memory when an app closes is the problem with my iMac, not the size of my iPhoto library, or my external hard drive, or the fact that 8Gb of memory is apparently no longer enough memory for decent response with Mavericks (which I thought was designed to help solve some of the memory issues that OS X has).
I need help and help is apparently nowhere to be found at Apple.
Is there anyone out there who can help me?

If you're using iPhoto 5 as you say then, yes, 24k photos is heading close to the Limit of 25k. iPhoto 6 is good for 250,000 images, iPhoto 11 is good for 1,000,000.
I'm going to guess that's a typo and that you have iPhoto 9.5.
I've simply never heard of "too many photos" causing the problem you describe. You don't need more memory. You don't need to break up the Library. "Flushing Memory" is a non-isssue. One of the big improvements in 10.9 is in memory management.
There are a couple of ways to break up a Library while preserving everything. It's dead easy with Aperture - export projects as Library - you can do it with iPhoto simply by duplicating the Library and deleting from the two libraries or use iPhoto Library Manager.
But, as I say, 24k is a small Library. My main library is more than twice the size of that.
Are Aperture and iPhoto using the same Library?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • IPhoto & iCloud has been removed when I reinstall?

I have a problem, my applications iPhoto & iCloud has been removed when I reinstall it to Mac OS X Lion. I need to purchase to App Store?

    Hi, Philipp,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply and support. The IE icon disappeared immediately after I downloaded MF. I tried to download IE again but without success. In the end all my icons on my start page disappeared, although I do not think this was to do with MF. I had to resort to restoring my lap top to factory settings for the umpteenth time and I have now got IE back but no MF. I will keep your advice and will try again when I am feeling brave enough and have sufficient time to try and download MF again. I am not confident with technical problems and greatly appreciate your help and support.
    Kind regards, K.

  • HT4906 Iphoto not able to link with icloud- more $$

So is this just another revenue stream for apple- I have to pay for a new Iphoto download - no update showing. Is that correct?

I have to pay for a new Iphoto download - no update showing. Is that correct?
No idea - totally depends on details you do not give
If you do not meet the minimum requirements then you can not use the feature - just like the rest of life - if you are not this tall you can not get on the Disneyland ride  --  requirements and setup instructions are here - http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
So is this just another revenue stream for appleof course - exactly like the new Ford is another revenue stream for Ford, etc, etc, etc, etc - the reason Apple hires people and pays them to implement new features is to create moe revenue - amazed that you did not know that (same for Microsoft, Adobe, and Ace Hardware - and your local hamburger stand)
What eactly did you think the purpose of new features was?

  • ICloud is not working in iphoto, iCloud is not working in iphoto

    Hi,
I am having difficulties with installing iCloud 9.5.1. on my iMac from 2007. I have updated all operating systems, but still iPhoto is not working properly. The main reason why I wanted to upgrade from iPhoto '08 to iPhoto 9.5 is the iCloud feature. So all my pictures taken with my iPhone are synced to my iMac. Here lies the problem, I cannot check the iCloud box in the preferences of the installed iPhoto 9.5.1 Neither can I check the option to use iCloud under the iCloud tab in the iPhoto overview.
I have reinstalled iPhoto several times, cleaned it from the OS via CleanMyMac, but still is not working.
I used to use an WD external harddrive as my library, but not anymore. Maybe there is still a hidden path somewhere in my computer referring to that old location? I have made a new local library on my iMac, but also this did not resolve the problem.
I can import pictures from a local folder, or iPhone to the newly installed iPhoto. Although this takes quite some time, this part of the program seems to work.
Anybody some good advice? I don't know anymore where to find the problem.
    Many thanks in advance!

I cannot check the iCloud box in the preferences of the installed iPhoto 9.5.1 Neither can I check the option to use iCloud under the iCloud tab in the iPhoto overview.
You do no say how the System Preferences "iCloud" options are set.
Have you clicked the "Options" button besides Photos in the System Preferences iCloud and enabled  "My Photo Stream"?
You have upgraded to MacOS X 10.9.3, if you are using iPhoto 9.5.1, right?

  • HT4906 Iphoto nor Aperture are visible in my mac

  • HT4906 iPhoto only downloaded some of my photos from photo stream

I have over 200 photos on photo stream but when I set up iPhoto only 51 of them downloaded. I thought perhaps only the more recent photos may have been downloaded but it's a mix of old and new. How can I get all photos from photo stream onto iPhoto and is iPhoto the best way to store photos on a MacBook Pro?

Your photos stream on iCLoud contains the last 1000 photos or the last 30 days photos - on any device you will see local photos up to 1000 but only 1000 or the last 30 days (which ever is smaller) are available for other devices through iCloud

  • IPhoto/iCloud stream

I understand the photo stream and shared photos for the most part; however, is there a way to access all of your pictures on your Mac iPhoto from your iPhone without "sharing" every single one of your photos into your own photo stream so that you can delete all of the pictures from your phone library for storage reasons but still have remote access to them?

Hello, welcome to Apple Support Communities,
Currently, if you want to share only select photos, you may turn off your "My Photo Stream" and create a Shared Photo Stream with what you want to share. Skip the screen asking who you want to share it with. You will be able to access these photos on all of your devices, but they will still take up space — just not as much as your entire My Photo Stream.
This fall, when iOS 8 is released, you may opt into turning on iCloud Photo Library, which will store the highest quality versions of your photos in iCloud, saving some space on your device. iCloud Photo Library will use your allotted iCloud space when iOS 8 is released.

  • IPhoto iCloud malfunction.. HELP!

I just updated my iPhoto to iPhoto '11, and there is no photo stream button. It goes in this order, "LIBRARY;events, photos, faces, places. RECENT; 2012, last 12 imports, last import, flagged, and trash." Photo stream should be in there, and it has disappeard. I went through the entire process over and over of how to set up iCloud on your Macbook. And I've done it before, all of my devices can use iCloud execpt for iPhoto, I really only want iCloud for my pictures, and now I cant?! Am I missing something here?

I just did this and now it works, and as I can see you're on here a lot, so if you see this question come up again, have them try this..
    Quit iPhoto, Quit System Prefrences.
Open System Preferences, go to iCloud.
Enable Photo Stream, and open iPhoto.
In the iPhoto Preferences the Enable Photo Stream was already checked unlike before.
But thank you for your time sir!

  • IPhoto & iCloud

What does iPhoto back to the iCloud? Does it back up the photos that I don't have an Camera roll?

Sorry but I have no idea what you are talking about
So the pictures now all in iPhoto imported -
Ok you state that the photos from yoru photo stream have ll been imported into iPhoto
but not in the folders i created
Since Folders in iPhoto do not hold photos this makes no sense - when PS photos are imported to iPhoto they go into an event named for the month the photo Stream photos were imported
I have an iPhone too since this week and there are the Pictures or Photostreamfolders from my iPad without doing something.
    Please explain
I already called the apple support - they told me if i get the Lion OS X 10 and more than it would be okey
Since you have Mountain lion again this does not make sense
Maybe reading the set up instructions for Photo Stream - http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
    and the FAQs  - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4486
    Would help

  • IPhoto iCloud - My Photo Stream

"My Photo Stream" on Shared - iCloud folder in iPhoto is not receiving any updates from iCloud. My iPad is getting photos i take on my iphone and visa versa though my iPhoto application on my Mac is not getting any photos.
Everything on the iMac is correct, it stopped working when i removed my icloud account and then added it back. now i cannot get it to receive any icloud photos unless i do a manual sync.
Any ideas how to resolve this?

That's a whole new ball game.  Go the System/iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Photos check box.
In iPhoto go to its iCloud preference pane and uncheck all checkboxes.
Reboot, and go back to each preference pane and recheck those boxes.  That should jumpstart the Shared Photo Streams.

  • Lion, Gallery, iPhoto, iCloud -- iConfused!

Hello all. I just upgraded my desktop to Lion and thus now cannot access Gallery any longer (though I can on my iPhone. Don't ask why 'cause I don't know why.) Gallery was so easy. And now, I can't figure out how to provide friends with a link to my photos/videos. I don't want to email them 20-30 pics or a whole video. I'd rather just upload the pics and email a link. Is that possible now with Lion and iCloud?

Go to iPhoto > Preferences > Accounts and delete MobileMe. Delete it in System Preferences > MobileMe because it doesn't work

  • Photos missing from Iphoto/ icloud

Help! I'm a new  icloud user. I had thousands of photos on my mac that I viewed through iphoto. I bought a new mac and transferred the photos to the new mac. Icloud installed in my new mac, but icloud was not on my previous mac. I was able to view all the photos on my new mac, but one morning i logged in to my new mac and all the photos were gone! I tried accesses them on iphoto through the photo stream icon, but they are no where to be found.  Questions: 1. Does icloud store them and if so, where can I access the photos? 2. or does icloud delete photos? Should I be using icloud to back up photos and important documents? If not, is there a better options for photo back ups? Thank you for your help!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Whilst photo stream works with iPhoto, it does not affect the photos in your iPhoto library in any way whatsoever. I doubt that photo stream had anything to do with the disappearance of your photos, you might be better asking what might have happened to your photos in the iPhoto community.
